Since Nintendo released WiiWare my friends and I have stayed unusually giddy about it. Like schoolgirls. The question I ask myself though is, why?
Perhaps it’s the lack of quality, non-committal Wii games that don’t cost part of my soul (there are plenty of good ones, just not cheap enough; kind of like a one-night-stand); or maybe it’s simply the fact that there’s a Final Fantasy title released (though, granted, it hardly has anything to do with the titles with which I grew to love); or maybe I’m just infatuated with Nintendo's nostalgic charms, like the good old days when I would skip high school to beat Super Metroid or Zelda: A link To The Past one more time, but I’ve genuinely been looking forward to the new (and relatively cheap, compared to disc-based games) lineup of titles that are being devoloped.
I'm a man about quality [sic]. I demand something from the game(s) I purchase and expect them to deliver whatever chosen aspect without fail. I've never been troubled or irked by having to "pay a little more" for this "quality". So why is it everyone has been so caught up with WiiWare? It's promoted as an 'avenue for developers with small budgets to release innovative, original, and smaller-scale games without the cost and risk of creating a title to be sold at retail' akin to Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Store. So what's creating this aura of intrigue? Nostalgia?
I’m aware, of course, that most of the titles have already been reviewed, and a great many of them have been deemed unworthy of the £5- £15 price tag, but I guess that I’m just easy nowadays–or more bored than ever. Regardless of the reason and much like the banal styling of how we feel about our lives at the moment;
It’ll give me something to do for a minute or two.
