I'm leaving for Iraq on the 16th of Dec. headed for Muzul. How about you?

Good luck getting a Purple Heart. Iraq is as tame as a kitten compared to how it used to be.
I'm in what's considered a crucial non-deployable billet, so I only go places I volunteer to go.
Deployed right now in Camp Korean Village Iraq and it is deader than a doornail out here. This used to be the "wild wild west", now there's not even action for weapons company.

Exactly what I was going to say. Exact dates and exact locations are CLASSIFIED information, and should not be shared with anyone outside your organization.

TOTSE is your organization. You can share all of your information with us.

goddammit trueborn.
Hold on a minute. I'm very careful about observing OPSEC and I don't even tell prior military members of my family sensitive information about my deployment.
I kept where and when I was going a secret... until my unit sent out letters to a massive mailing list and the newspaper telling everyone where we were at. At that point, I'm pretty sure me being in CKV stopped being classified.
Could you reference me to an article of the UCMJ or whatever OPSEC is under where it says your current location is classified? I could see it being classified when you're on a mission or something, obviously, but why would you not be able to disclose what base you're on?

You should talk to your units OPSEC manager.
I'm currently more than several months away from being deployed, and we were told the bases each person is going to, and a ship out date. We were then told that that information is classified secret, and not to share details with our families. I'm allowed to say that I'm going to Iraq sometime around May of next year, but I cannot tell anyone the exact base I'm slated to go to, or any dates, until further notice. When it comes closer to the ship out date, then we may share more information, as to the base we're going to, and exactly when we're shipping out.
It should be obvious, as to the reasons why troop movements are kept secret.

This isn't entirely true.
Actual classified information is not allowed to leave the space it was generated in except by means deemed appropriate to safeguard the information at that level of classification; on top of that, the information may only transit to another secure location accredited at least at the same level of classification as the information itself. Furthermore, this information cannot be given to individuals who do not have the appropriate clearance, resource access, or need-to-know; not everyone in the military has this. This is why the military as a whole is considered a "multi-level mode of operation" in the context of classified information.
Personnel movements are considered unclassified but sensitive; thus, movement orders can be given to individuals who do not possess any level of security clearance. This does not mean that they shouldn't be safeguarded. The U.S.S. Cole incident was a direct result of OPSEC violation. (The term "loose lips sink ships" was quite literal in this sense.) Beyond that, the Japanese knew the exact date and time that the U.S.S. George Washington was going to be in port Yokosuka many months before it actually happened. That had the potential to become a very bad situation especially with all of the waterbased protestors. Thankfully, nothing did happen.
The only time that movement orders are truly classified is for special purpose missions such as SEAL operations or special intelligence gathering. In these scenarios, the people who are given their orders have the proper clearance and need-to-know. (Yes, there is such a thing as a SECRET clearance.)

Just contact your local OPSEC officer. I think I'll talk to them in the next few days, but try not to involve INFOCON, since I don't plan on keeping up with it that much. Maybe I'll just set together some considerations.

You'll learn what deploying really means soon enough.
Good luck!

Well I already am deployed, I've been in Iraq for several months. I'm typing from our own little internet center right now.
I'll look in to it, but, like I said, if our unit has already disclosed the information to the media and our families via mailing list (after we got here) I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to say that I'm in Camp Korean Village, Iraq.
