View Full Version : Amt
whats up guys?
came across an AMT 1911 hard baller, guy wants 350 for it, fired it once, seems pretty solid.. looked up sojme revielws online and they were VERRY mixed, just wanted to know what you guys thought about the company and whatnot, or if anybody had one and what they think of it?
i liked the desing of the AMT .45 backup as well, but and heard thats a really good gun also. so i figured the 1911 cant be to bad.

Reviews are mixed because AMT quality control was never very good. Some guns were complete lemons, others worked great, some sucked at first then were fine after a few adjustments to the extractor, ejector, springs, feedramp etc.
If it shoots ok and you dont see any cracks or excessive wear you should be fine. It would probobly be a good gun to work on.
I dont suggest the 1911 to new shooters. Its a very hands on gun. It can be picky on ammo, lubrication, limp wristing and so on. Small parts must be changed out very frequently, as little as 3000 rounds in some cases.
What do you plan on doing with the gun? Is this your first handgun?
nope, ive had a 1911 before, didnt fire it to much, but i know the funtionalty of the 1911 pretty well.
the guy told me it shoots fine, i didnt see any problems with the gun, apparently the hardballer works best with full metal jacket ammo, shoulnt be to much or a problem. another guy told me who had the same gun, his shell would get stuck on the way out in the slide, longways, not side ways, so he just got a differnt spring, and it worked fine. if i get it and am having problems should i take it to a gun smith? it want it to be a reliable carry around gun, as my other guns were just stollen.
For $350, you can fix whatever is wrong with it.

How can you let your guns get stollen? Keep them in a safe or loaded within arms reach or on you.
I will just remind you that seldom do people part with guns for a bargain, unless they are needy for cash or the gun has something wrong with it.
So be mindful of the gun. Maybe visit a range with your guy, have him test it before you.
Just my $0.02 man.

^^ Bingo!
You could have a gunsmith look it over. Making your gun learn to eat plenty of hollowpoints is stupid simple. You can have a gunsmith do it, or you can do it yourself if you are brave.

As I said earlier, the 1911 is a bad, bad choice for beginners. If by "know the funtionalty of the 1911 pretty well" you mean you dont know any more than how to load it, I concur.
You will end up spending $100 to get your feed ramp done.
250 for a new barrel + bushing. Another 100 to get that fitted.
Trigger job 125
Do you know how to change out the sear, recoil, hammer, and firing pin springs? Since you dont thats gonna cost a lot more than it should as well.
So now you are into the price of an STI Spartan which is a good 1911. If I were you Id go get a Taurus autoloader for 350 and blast away.
Me no more bothers wit this one! Peace niggaaaaaa!

On the other hand, that smooth stainless slide is just damn sexy...
I'd love to have an Automag or two and a Backup. The Hardballer may take some work to get running right. If nothing else, AMT's handguns always have their own style. I even like the cheesy grips.
Strip the gun and check the slide rails and mating surfaces. If they seem rough or there's excessive slide wiggle, walk away.
