Alright guys in your opinion what is the best game of 2008?

In my personal opinion it is Call of Duty World at War.
I have of course played Gears of War and Left 4 Dead and they really aren't my kind of games. It would be nice if everyone could tell me what their favorite games are and explain why or why not they like a game or hate it.

Lets get the post going!

WaW is a re-skinned CoD4, yea it's a ton of fun, but it is nothing new. CoD4 also got old fast, the game requires so little skill.

Gears of War has an awesome single player campaign, but its online is pretty lacking.

I haven't played Left 4 Dead yet, but seeing how valve made it it must be good.

Fallout 3 is definitely up there too, the main quest is weak, but the game overall is loaded with stuff to do and its lots of fun.

I had high hopes for mirrors edge, but only heard bad things about it.

Fable 2 just sucked.

My Vote:
Fallout 3

I like Fable 2 it is sweet but it was to short and is really lacking, i mean theres only so many times you can fight in the crucible.

Gears of war 2 is awesome i hated Gow1 but Gow2 is fantastic.

LittleBigPlannet deserves a mention. I wouldn't say it's the BEST game i've ever played, but so far i've had nothing but fun.

It's got plenty of replay value; a shit-ton of items to get, online scores to beat and litterally 1000's of levels made by other people. They're not just shitty make shift ones either; i've played some really well designed levels and won some weird creations (Rocket Chickens, Battle Tanks) and even remakes of Metal Gear Solid and Mirrors Edge.

The multiplayer support is decent too. Player 2 can pick up the controller and instantly it's a co-op game. If you choose so you can even complete the whole game with more than one player (offline, online or both).

Unfortunatly the online play isn't quite as smooth as I hoped it to be. Sure the levels download very quickly but when there is more than one player online it seems to choke and the servers are up and down like a yo-yo. When they're working though I have no complaints, maybe it's just teething problems. They've had three patches so far. I hate it when developers release a broken game just because they can fix the problems later with a patch.

As for the games you listed; Left 4 Dead looks awesome, I wish I had a desktop. I don't think i'll be getting Call of Duty and i've heard good news about Gears 2.

All i can say is that L4D is soo awsome , honestly i thought it was gonna be just another crappy survival horror game like zombie master etc but they have made it in such a way that you cant help but cream all over ya screen whilst playing it

Left 4 Dead FTW!!

Well COD5 was reskinned yes... But all of the levels are different and the damage value has been improved. It no longer takes an entire clip to kill some bastard with juggernaut and they have a variety of "new" weapons. However the Campaign was boring in my opinion but at some points game play becomes very intense. Online play is pretty cool but they still haven't fixed the spawn points from the previous COD games... (Meaning you still spawn near the enemy spawn.) Overall the game is actually pretty fun.

Gears of War 2 was ok, but I am not really a Gears fan... I played the MP mode for a few hours and once I got used to it, it became a bit better. The graphics are amazing and the storyline is kind of interesting although I have seen similiar stories in some books so I am going to assume those books are where they got their idea for the games. Gameplay becomse extremely intense on insane mode and in Horde mode (on insane). Overall the game is pretty good for something I never really liked playing and I will be buying it soon.

Left 4 Dead isn't really my kind of game but it is alright... I myself didn't like it but I had friends that bought it and loved it. I myself think it is a cheap rip of Resident Evil and so on but with a shitty story line... If there even is one. So far I have played til around level 3 or mission 3 whichever you guys prefer and I haven't found anything about the game entertaining... But I will say that the online co op mode makes the game a bit interesting and more fun if you have all of your friends online and you guys just want to kill waves and waves of zombies. I myself thought before the game came out that you would pretty much be stuck in one building and have to go and search for supplies and etc... to fix barricades and so on. However that is not the case. You must run around and collect your supplies but you never stay in one place for too long. Overall the game is ok, but I can't really say much for it because it isn't my kind of game.

Fall out 3 I have not played so I cannot say much about it....

Mirrors Edge I have not played so I cannot say much about it....

Fable 2 I have not played so I cannot say much about it...

Gears of War (The original) is pretty much way different from GoW2. Gameplay has been improved and the damage has been decreased. However you can still jump on and see a chainsaw nub coming at you to slice you in two and of course the guys with the mortars everywhere trying to be sneaky sitting in the back of the map. GoW2 has its on special things about it and GoW is still in my opinion a pretty good game...

A cheap rip of resident evil.

Your a fucking imbecile and you keep double posting. You opinions are basically retarded why did you think that you would be stuck in one building? Who ever told you you would be fixing up barricades? When did anyone ever suggest it was going to be more than an co-op arcade zombie shooter. Just cause you have some stupid expectations about a game and it doesn't live up to them doesn't make it a cheap rip of Resident Evil. It isn't anything like Resident Evil, the single player story driver survival horror. It is meant to be played multiplayer if you are playing alone you are playing wrong.

Anyhow. It is a very cool game the AI director is brilliant the game is different every time. If an AI ever takes over the world you better hope it isn't this one cause it really is sadistic. When you are playing on expert at least. There is nothing like when you first find the tank and he fuck up your whole team, everyone goes crazy. There is nothing better than playing as the tank in VS mode and owning the survivors.

The best game of 08 is a toss up between Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Rock Band 2, Braid, and Audiosurf with an honorable mention for Dead Space and Mirror's Edge.

Also, to the guy above me, don't get so worked up. He's a moron who's playing Left 4 Dead primarily in singleplayer and thinks World at War is the game of the year. You might as well be screaming at a shit covered brick wall.

I never said WaW was game of the year. I did however say that it was one of the best WWII games out there. It is of course missing alot... =\ I wouldn't call it game of the year... If anything GoW2 deserves that...

GoW2 suffers from the Halo syndrome.

Slightly updated graphics, same old game.

Not in the running for GotY. Neither is GTA4, CoD5, or any other of these repackaged sequels.

My vote is for L4D or LBP. Haven't played Mirror's Edge or Fallout 3 yet though.

After just finishing the No Mercy campaign, I know for sure he's not kidding.

Holy shit. And it was just a trial run with bots to see how if my settings weren't too much, I can't fucking wait to play with my friends once they finally get their copies (hopefully tomorrow).

On a side note, I tried the 360 demo, holy shit is it ugly. I couldn't even believe how bad the graphics were when compared to my PC. Blurry and jagged as fuck. Still fun as hell, but it was a night and day difference.

Left 4 Dead is insane.

Advanced is challenging, makes the game fun, and with good friends it shouldn't take more than an hour or two to beat with a few retries here and there.

Expert is nearly impossible. You might beat 1 level without wiping, but I guarantee it will take 5+ hours to beat a movie, if you can even do it. A tank on expert is asking for a wipe. A witch, a tank, a boomer and hunters is impossible. Even worse is how eerie the game gets. We were going through the trainyard where we always fight hordes of enemies, and nothing. Barely a few stragglers. So what gives? We proceed cautiously, get to the train station, scope it out, still nothing. As we're leaving the station, BOOM, a couple of hordes, and a fucking tank.

The AI director is brilliant. In the demo it was hard to see just how much he spices things up, but across 20 maps you're getting a different experience each time. And the fucking music is off the hook too. Sets the mood better than most movie scores.

In other news, I just played an hour of Versus mode in Left 4 Dead.

Easily my new favorite multiplayer shooter. I don't think there's any other game that gets half as chaotic, and it's just insanely awesome. At one point we were being rushed by a horde, Hunters were jumping left and right, and I turn around to see a gas station or something fucking explode. It was truly like something out of a movie.

The coolest moment for me was when, playing as a Smoker, I dragged one of the other team off a roof after they had just spent all that time getting up there on the long ass lift. Then, a horde comes out of nowhere and rushes her, so the other team jumps down to save her, but they should have just left the bitch behind and kept on trucking because it was far too much for them to handle, and after they'd killed me as the Smoker, I got to respawn has a Hunter and made the very last kill.

But the ultimate irony is that when teams were switched, someone pulled the same trick on me, and bam I was down on the ground while my team looked down in horror, they weren't about to make the same mistake our opponents did. So I was down there, alone, with two pistols (I'd ran out of ammo in my Uzi) and zombies coming from all angles. I just turned around and ran back to the lift, which had extended a ladder, and climbed back up the roof, and ran across the awning to try and get caught up with my teammates. Only one guy had stayed in that area to cover me as I tried to get back, and he fended off the Hunter and Smokers that tried to finish me off, I eventually made it in, and just as I was jumping down the hole in the floor to meet up with the other two who had pushed forward a Hunter flew out of nowhere and tackled the man who had just saved me. Unfortunately he was up on the other level, and no one could save him, unless one of us jumped down through a blown out wall and made the whole trip through the parking lot, up the lift ladder, and across the awning to get back to him. A huge part of me wanted to attempt it, since he'd stayed behind to save me, but then the other guy said:

"Forgot him, he's gone now"

And we pushed on, leaving our friend to die.

That ladies and gentlemen, is GOTY material.

That ladies and gentlemen, is GOTY material.

For me it was playing Death Toll, and as we get into the tunnel, Louis says "there's a fence, we'll have to go around".

As Louis, burst into my mic "motherfucker this is bullshit, I'm black and I can't even jump a fence".

Or when I was being healed even though Zoey had less health, and she pipes in "but I'm the pretty one".

Funny.

I officially withdraw my F3 vote and put it in for L4D. F3 is an awesome game, tons of fun, lots to do, replay value through the roof. But it is more or less Oblivion just taking place in a depressing environment and with guns.

Playing L4D with my friends is some of the most fun I have had playing a video game in a long time. The game gets so chaotic so quickly that you can help but yell at the screen. The game changes so much each time you play it, making it very unpredictable even when you have played the same map many times. Also the mechanics of the game are typical valve genius, getting puked on by the boomer, startling the witch, hunters/smokers, and of course the tanks. I can think of countless OH FUCK moments that these things have brought upon us.

You're the most blatant fucking liar to ever grace these boards, your posts are full of more shit than the goddamn troll posts around here. You actually think anyone but your kin listens to you? I don't see what your bitching about, he said that the 360 graphics suck for L4D. They do, and I am sure the PC graphics are much much better. PC graphics are always the best, hence a high-end video card costing 2x that of a 360 and a high-end CPU costing up to 3x that of a PS3.

Same here, I said it was a toss up before but after spending more time with it my vote goes to Left 4 Dead undoubtedly. It's got less content, it's rough around the edges, and it's not the prettiest game in the world but it's just so much fun, and so unlike any other shooter out there. I think the reason I love it so much is because after playing games for so long, I never feel like I'm in danger, like something around the corner could just annihilate me at any second. I played Dead Space on Hard the first time through and was never scared and never felt overwhelmed. It was still an awesome game, but I didn't feel vulnerable and I felt like I knew when they bad guys were going to come 90% of the time. In Left 4 Dead, you can never be certain of when they're coming (save for the few climactic sequences when they always), and you feel like at any moment a horde and a Tank could be the end of you and your team, just like that.

No game has ever made me so vulnerable, and I don't think I've ever had such a feeling of raw desperation from a videogame. The chaos is just unparalleled, and no other game is anything like it.

I don't see what your bitching about, he said that the 360 graphics suck for L4D. They do, and I am sure the PC graphics are much much better. PC graphics are always the best, hence a high-end video card costing 2x that of a 360 and a high-end CPU costing up to 3x that of a PS3.

You know, I didn't even realize that's what he was bitching about. I thought he was just mad that I liked Left 4 Dead (which is par for the course on this forum, people getting pissed at you for liking or not liking a game).

Also, just to set the record straight, my videocard cost half the price of a 360, and my CPU one fifth the price of a PS3. And I run L4D at 1920x1200 with everything maxed along with 4XAA and 16XAF. Runs beautifully too.

So yeah, that might be a bit of an e-peen wag, but I'm not fond of the misconception that PC gaming costs an arm and a leg, because with prices the way they are right now you can build a system that puts both the 360 and PS3 to shame for around $400, maybe even less if you play your cards right.

And the only reason I mentioned how ugly the 360 version looked is because I was genuinely shocked when I turned it on. I expected a lot more. Maybe it was because I had just played the PC demo the day before and it was just such a sharp contrast, but I don't even think that's it. I think they could have done a lot more with the power the 360 has.

That's true. I was talking more about absolute best stuff on the market products. GTX 280 1 GB - $400, Intel Extreme QX9775 3.2GHz - $1550, these are completely unnecessary for games out today (except for maybe full res ultra-high settings crysis with realism mod) but guarantee consistently high fps with max settings for at least a year (that's pretty sad now that i think about it).
