View Full Version : Pirogies!
Probably my favorite food ever, I eat them every single day.
First I defrost them in the microwave, then I fry them up in butter.
Lately I've been getting bored though. So I started trying new things.
When I take them out of the hot butter I add a chopped up clove of garlic then like one second later I pour the mixture over the pirogies. Really garlicy and good.
I've tried adding feta, that's alright.
And I've tried adding those weird strange spice mixes that are called like "Tuscany Supreme!" when it's really just all the leftover dried basil and garlic powder bits leftover at the factory. That's alright.
Well what else can I do with these guys? different ways of cooking them or some kind of sauce I can make for them? Everyone fucking loves pirogies!

Where do you buy them? The only ones I can find are at awesome eateries, can't find frozen ones at the store.

Oh man, at my grocery store you can get huge bags of them for like $5. They're fairly bland though, is the issue.
You can get ones with bacon, but I just get the plain cheddar ones.
yeah at no frills right. Anyways the best way to eat them is with lots of sour cream on them.

Real Polskis can't afford bacon :P
Anywho, yeah, I can eat 'em as often as I want, and never get sick of 'em.

Bacon and Cheddar are the best ones.
I deep fry them in vegetable oil. The package says not to because they can explode and kill you or something. But I do it anyways.

in a pan cook some bacon. once the fat has rendered take out the bacon an crumble it up. now saute some shredded cabbage an some diced onion in that wonderful flavor fountain we call bacon grease. once your onions start to change color add in some minced garlic. cook it for a few more seconds(dont cook too long as you want more of that sharp garlic taste) then dump in your defrosted pirogies.
once all that is cooked plate it up. then dust liberally with paprika an ground black pepper. serve it with a nice crisp psilner an a dollop of sour cream

I have them every christmas eve at my grandmothers house. She makes them by hand, and they are amazing. She makes three kinds, one with Potato and cheese, one with beef and one with blueberries. The potato and meat ones are fried with onions and served as a side with a White fish being the entree.
The blueberry is served as a desert it is my favorite.
Those things basically get me through college, they're really good with hot sauce and also pretty good with barbecue sauce. Great on the grill too.

add some onions to the garlic and pour over. eat with cream cheese.
The bacon things sound good but I'm veggie.
I'm surprised I've never had onions with them, seems obvious.

Pierogie are the bomb.
Try mixing mashed potato, cheese and fried onion and serve with sour cream. Or if you want to make something a little different try filling them with a reduced berry compot and serve with some thick vanilla custard.

Am I the only one that likes my pirogies boiled?
I've had the frozen ones that I assume are like the ones you're talking about. Mrs T's brand, but whatever. When you boil them, you just dump them into the pot still frozen and when they're all floating, they're done. Then drain and add some diced onion.
Boiled > Fried.

Boiled is by far the best way, so long as they've been made fresh.
dry cottage cheese + dill
butter + sour cream + dill sauce.
perfect fried or boiled.

I've never eaten them, but I've eaten their Oriental dumpling brethren many a time. I love them filled with pork/vegetables and dipped in soy sauce.
Yes, onions. Tossing in some sauerkraut works. Coriander puts a different spin on things. Sun-dried tomatoes work nicely with them.
You've got options.

he's from new zealand. they're really not popular here in australia, either. I can't think of one place that sells them (frozen or at a restaurant) in my city. only reason i know of them is because i have a czech background and have been to poland.
sure are tasty...

Of course the Englishman would think boiling imparts the best flavor... :p
Boiling them? No fucking way. Frying them in butter is the only way to go.

If they're not fresh it's probably best to fry them.
Tried anything new with them yet?

Usually you boil them when you make them from scratch "have not had those kind in ten plus years"
There good though, shitty generic store bought ones suck though

Best way is to boil them(if they're fresh) then finish them by frying them in butter with onions.

I guess that's probably, true, I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of eating fresh ones. That might be my next kitchen adventure.
I've tried frying them with actual veggies, some mushrooms and spinach and that was really good.
