I took over the rec room as my room becuase I was living in pretty much a closet. The problem is I have an open doorway that is smaller and shorter then your average one, also there nice wood around the frame so I dont know if I would be allowed to use hinges or not(damage the wood). In any case I dont want to really hang beads beucase sound will still eassily pass through.

So do you guys have any ideas for a realitivly simple sound proff door? im pretty handy with me hands and have access to some tools

Ill call my landlord and ask if I can put a door up and get back to this post in awhile

You could use a big block of foam

A mattress of the appropriate size, covered with fabric maybe, you could even decorate it if you're a homo.

"Stay out, paper trails rec room!"

You could use a thick curtain to stop sound. Go to a fabric store, or a theatrical supply, or the internet has a vast array of choices.

If you want to use a curtain to reduce sound I'd go with at least an 18-20oz or heavier Cotton Velour or something comparable.

And you could go an extra step by covering all the walls and ceilings with curtains to absorb sound waves as well and reducing the number of hard surfaces in the room my covering with fabric.

I've seen egg cartons stapled to the wall or plywood and covered with fabric in some drum rooms and it worked comparably well to some decent professional acoustic stuff.

Now you have an excuse to leave your dirty laundry everywhere, so your mom has a better life forgetting you exist somewhere downstairs.

Your brain motherfucker, can you use it?

It took me literally 5 seconds to think of over a dozen ideas that could work.

Problem: Sound is going through door.

Solution: Something preventing sound from going through the door.

^ ask your self, he IS and ACOLYTE...

Umm....the egg carton idea is basically what they do for real sound proof rooms, except they use pyramids of sound absorbing material. Egg cartons can work to a degree. Just put a normal door with a heavy curtain over it. Simple

build a frame to fit tightly inside the existing frame, and hang the door from that. you dont need to fix the new frame to the existing frame if it fits tightly enough, although you can shoot a couple of 2 inch fixing nails and no one will ever notice.

problem solved without beads, matresses, glitter or egg cartons.

Excuse me for using the terms door and doorway synonymously.

t's quite apparent from my post that I understand what the problem is.

Did I not just mention using door and doorway interchangeably? and yet you decided to requote me and take up more bandwidth.

Instead of nitpicking on the phrasing of my posts maybe you should attend to the problem at hand and help the kid with the door(way).

Dick.

A quite easy way would probably be to hang a blanket over the doorway. Could work a bit, never know.
By the way, beads don't work at all, i use those cuz i had a sick Jimi Hendrix picture on it. hmmm. Ah ha. Polystyrene. Get a huge block of polystyrene and cut it to the size of the door. It's relatively easy to find, and you just push it down when you want to get through.

Get two 2" thick pieces of door size wood. Make sure it's solid. Then just go to guitar center or check ebay for soundproofing foam. Put the foam between the two doors and get heavy-duty hinges and reinforce your door's frame.

He can't cut into the doorway, so he will have to build a frame and fit it in there. 2 doors and foam will be way to fucking wide anyway.

Okay, before I go in detail about how to solve this problem, would you all PLEASE be a bit more civilized? I realize this is totse and all, but DIY has historically been the most helpful and most friendly board in the entire temple. I'd like to keep it that way. If someone hasn't done enough research or hasn't read everything above, all he needs is a gentle reminder. Calling him a stupid fuck doesn't do anybody any good.

Anyways, soundproofing your doorframe:

Sandwich foam between two pieces of wood, OR sandwich a piece of wood between two pieces of foam. Either way. Then, saw it in half, vertically. Take some cardboard and fold it into a U-shape over the TOP of your doorway. Put a piece of wood on both sides of the doorway top. Now, put four clamps (like this:http://tinyurl.com/6omz3u) onto the cardboard; one on each end, and two in the very middle. Now, using some strong string, hang both of your panels from the clamps (one string going from each top corner of each panel to a corresponding clamp). The panels combined should be a few inches shorter and narrower than the opening. So you'll have a bit of open space, but much less sound will get through. These panels will twist when you go through the middle of them, opening kind of like saloon doors (http://www.shutterbugaz.com/saloondoors.jpg). The cardboard and wood are there to protect the walls from being damaged.

the clamps are the \ and / on top; strings go straight down from each one to the tops of the panels.
