View Full Version : How do I begin ?
Okay guys , here's the thing.I'm just a random newbie currently with a throbbing interest in the occult.
But there is a lot of misguided information on the internet , probably influenced by recent media events , which really ticks me off.
I may be asking too much , but is it possible if one could fill this thread with tips and meaningful advice for beginners?
I'm willing to learn.
inb4 "lurk moar".
About 8 months ago I was in roughly the same position as you.
Do you have any attraction to any specific path, or any specific part of the occult? Are you just interested in theology and mythology or are you interested in becoming a practicing magician. Do you want to use magic more enlightenment or physical gain? Are you in any religion?
Anyways, get ready to study your ass off.
This (http://www.occultforums.com/) forum is a wealth of information. Please don't go there and ask the exact same question, take the time to look around and use the search function.
I found from my studies that Hermetics and Kabbalah resonate the best with me, you might prefer something like Yoga, Witchcraft, Chaos, or Satanism.
I also have some book suggestions for you, these are just off the top of my head and are in no particular order- Chicken Qaballah by Lon Milo Duquette, Garden of Pomegranates by Israel Regardie, Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig, Initiation into Hermetics by Franz Bardon, Summoning Spirits by Konstantinos, Astral Dynamics by by Robert Bruce, The Magus by Francis Barret, The Book of Law by Aleister Crowley.
Modern Magick and Initiation into Hermetics are both great places to start, but it is very very important that you read just about everything you can get your hands on.
For Shamanism Armsmerchant suggests The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner.
You should learn a divination method or two, such as Tarot or I-Ching.
You would be amazed how many books you can find online, such as websites like sacred-texts.com (http://www.sacred-texts.com). I also found, amazingly, wikipedia to give really good general overviews of topics.
It is imperative that you learn to meditate.
Get a good understanding of all kinds of religions and spiritualities and their histories.
Understand Chakras, the tree of life, and as much occult symbolism are very important.
From one of the topics on the forum I mentioned earlier, someone suggests studying these 35 topics.
1. History of religion
2. Pagan theology
3. Theories of magick
4. Magickal ethics and etiquette
5. Breathing
6. Centering and Grounding
7. Meditation 101
8. Visualization
9. Chakras
10. Body of light
11. Energy work 101
12. Shielding
13. Divination
14. Astral realms
15. Path-work and guided meditation
16. Astral projection
17. Correspondences
18. Guardians
19. Seasonal celebrations – Esbats and Sabbats
20. Trance induction and altered states
21. Ritual dance
22. Color and music magik
23. Magikal tools, weapons and temple arrangements
24. Sacred space and circle casting
25. Massage
26. Healing
27. Magikal names and power words
28. Amulets and talismans
29. Spellcraft
30. Weather magik
31. Tree and plant identification
32. Herbalism
33. Portable beasties, elementals and thought forms
34. Evocation
35. Invocation
I haven't even began to scratch the surface (in this post and in my own studies). If I think of much else I will post it later and if any of the more experience members see anything wrong with what I said please point it out.
Studying the occult is both exciting and fulfilling, good luck :D
Read about Hitler and the occult. Probably the most meaningful and relevant persuaders of our time.

I can't add much to what Benpari said (great job, btw), but I personally would not recommend I Ching to a beginner. (Someone said not to get into I Ching before you are fifty--so I looked into it on my fiftieth birthday, couldn't get my head around it. Maybe when I'm seventy. . . . )
I would recommend The Perennial Philosophy by Aldous Huxley--it is by no means an easy read, but well worth the effort.
I have never actually worked with I-Ching so that sounds like reasonable advice to me.
I am still learning Tarot. If you have any advice past just memorizing the meaning of the cards Arms (or anyone else experienced) it would be really helpful.

To my knowledge, Hitler's salute was taken directly from the Romans, the United States, and several other countries. It may have occult significance but I doubt he learned it from a magician.
Hitler and the occult is a very interesting topic though.
I also started reading a book called The Power Of Myth by Joseph Campbell this morning. You might find it interesting and relevant as well.

Well, I too am just beginning my occult studies, probably just a few months ago. I've read almost hundreds of books, most are pointless or I'm just too stupid to quite understand what they're getting at. (Yeah, that'll defiantly happen a lot.) And also, a lot of things in the books you'll read you can only have a minor understanding of them through pure intellect, a lot of things will require experience in order just to know what the heck they're talking about.
Just right now, I'm working on self-meditation, yoga, and practicing manipulation energy. Like those Chi or psi balls or whatever you want to call them. (same thing really, different name.)
My problem is, I can get energy just fine, but I don't know how to control it. I'm absolutely stuck, I can't actually "form" a ball. Just amount a mass of energy and play around with it in swirls in between in hands. -.-
And I'm having a very hard time finding a place and time to fucking meditate, I'm never home alone and every 5 minutes my parents will check up on me or they're just too damn noisy. (does anyone have any tips on what to do or where I could go?)
I'm also practicing just moving a needle with my own energy by sending it to the needle and pushing it. (stick it on the ceiling hanging down by a string.)
And just yesterday me and a friend discovered we can send and transfer energy to eachother's bodies. Ex. I can push energy into his hands and move them up and down. (and in the process I was doing this, we did have a needle hanging up and that was swaying a good inch back and forth while I was pushing out energy, and when I stopped, the needle stopped and my friends hands stopped moving.)
I've also been recording my dreams for about the past month, and remember mostly all of them except the past 3 nights I don't know why either? I've remember every dream for weeks until the past 2 nights?(probably because I didn't meditate before sleeping -.-)
But I do have another question that I have not figured out myself, how the heck do you lucid dream? Or be conscious during your dream, live in it, not just remember it? And also astral project, I have read everything in the forum on it, just nothing helps or anything. Thanks in advance. ^.^ And I hope I even helped a little rithel sharing my self-experiences.
To my knowledge, Hitler's salute was taken directly from the Romans, the United States, and several other countries. It may have occult significance but I doubt he learned it from a magician.
Hitler and the occult is a very interesting topic though.
In his speeches, not the salute, he used very strong postures and expressions that sometimes resembled "sex".
Some magician hypnosis guy taught him a lot of stuff he knew. Not to mention, there is a theory floating around that Hitler was actually hypnotized due to being blinded in WW 1.
Depending on what you are looking for, you may want to look in the SS human science experiments/spear of destiny.
I don't know if this is correct but Nazis made huge leaps in biology because the cruel things they did. However instead of people using their findings, society decided to never use it, and we can't recreate it legally.
I would have liked to see the findings of the twin experiments really.
Finally, Hitler and the Occult - History Channel. Look it up it is VERY informative.

It sounds like you are good at generating it. Now you must learn to control it. For now, forget about making it powerful and just focus on imagining the ball or the body shield, or whatever. Hold this ball in your mind for however long you want to, just hold it there, then stop, then do it again. Repeat that for awhile. The same one over and over, don't do anything different.
Once you can do that clear your mind and practice generating the chi, first store all that you generate in your stomach (or where ever you want). continue to generate it in your stomach while you allow it to flow in other parts of your body. Do that for awhile.
Now, remember that thing you were imagining earlier? your mind has already been there so you are familiar with the terrain. There are a few ways you can do this, Construct the ball in your mind, stomach, or outside of you (this uses very little chi) and then power it up. Or you could just reach into your storage and pull out a ball.
Basically, practice both parts, the structure and the generation, then put them together.
And I'm having a very hard time finding a place and time to fucking meditate, I'm never home alone and every 5 minutes my parents will check up on me or they're just too damn noisy. (does anyone have any tips on what to do or where I could go?)
Ambient music in your head phones or goto a park.

First of all, thanks Vanhalla (and btw your post are always good and I do enjoy reading them)
But, now here's where I'm confused, my stomach? What's with my stomach? I always think my chi energy comes from my third eye which is overly powerful I think...(especially compared to my other chakras which I never feel)? I always feel my third eye, it always just feels so full of energy, constant pressure too, but anyways I've wondered, why is everything that I read, chi has to do with your stomach and storing it there? I've never felt anything there. And I have tried to send chi thoughout my body, I didn't feel anything anywhere. Only my hands and third eye to me seem like they're the only ones capable of doing anything? -.-

No, but a Jew sure did, he was practicing stage magician or so I read before? And was a decent hypnosis. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's I've read before.

Try binaural beats. They should get your brain in the right place faster than anything else.
I'm missing a lot on Hitler apparently. I will have a look at that history channel documentary.
I would also suggest reading the Kybalion and I have come to realize that to actually complete the course outlined in Bardon's Initiation into Hermetics will likely take upwards of 20 years. However, I can imagine that if you honestly complete it the results will be incredible.
Edit:
I forgot to mention that Franz Bardon has 2 other books as well as Initiation into Hermetics, these are The Practice of Magical Evocation and The Key to the true Quabbalah. They should be read in that order, and you shouldn't start [practicing] the second or 3rd book until completing the at least the 8th step of Initiation into Hermetics. I am told this is the best system of achieving spiritual enlightenment and magical power ever devised, I would suggest you at least have a look at them.

You should probably let it leak from your higher eye if that is what comes naturally to you.
I know what you mean when you speak of your hands. I don't know why that is, it's always easier to send it directly to your hands.
As for the stomach, one of my earlier experiences was with this green gas that would just seep out of the surrounding fat and I would store it in my stomach.
I would suggest for you to practice generating a large amount in the center of your head, and try to develop a flow. Maybe start by centering the focus, and then swaying it. Eventually try swirling it around your head or something.
Also your chi energy, or as I like to call it, Ætheric energy, comes from everything.
Where would you find these? I'm interested :)

In chinese tradition your dan tien is the centre and storage place for your chi and it's in your stomach. The third chakra is somewhere between the solar plexus and the navel and is described as the seat of your life force.
Start with Tarot cards.
Do a 15 card spread when something big is happening in your life.
You will notice how accurate it is.
Also,Try to memorize each cards characteristic.
It will help you read the people around you.
This is what happened to me.Peace

I was wondering where I can find a tarot deck. I have no idea where to look, and searching for 'occult shops' doesn't get me anywhere (nor does the connotation of the word help, sadly).

I would recommend these books, some people here will probably be interested in them.
Ascension Magick: Ritual, Myth & Healing for the New Aeon
by Christopher Penczak
Consists of five parts, twenty three chapters, 561 pages, 28 exercises, and 72 charts and figures.
If you gain a solid understanding of everything in this book, you will really know your shit.
The Mentalist's Handbook: An Explorer's Guide to Astral, Spirit, and Psychic Worlds
by Clint Marsh
Illustrations by Jeff Hoke
I wish I would spend more time absorbing the info and practicing the exercises of this book.
Countdown2chaos would probably like this book a lot.
Opening to Channel: How to connect with your guide
Good book for anyone who is interested in the art of channeling.
Hope this helps someone on their journey, they sure did help me.

Normal book stores usually have tarot decks. Just don't expect a big selection.

Go to a Barnes and Nobles, I knew they have Raider Waite deck, and Thoth deck, and a few other weird ones that I have no idea who/what they were.
