Hi all, I like listening to good quality music on my audio system. This currently consists of mission m71 bookshelf speakers connected to a pioneer SA-7500 amp and a wharfedale sw150 sub, both of which connect separately to the soundcard in my computer.
My music taste is really quite broad and varies depending on my current mood anywhere from electronic techno jazz, guitar & vocals to heavy rock and a bit of metal with possibly some good underground type rap thrown in.

In my view at the moment as I glance through my music library (this has become most prominent since I've recently 'upgraded' to the pioneer amp from a sony cd player combo) the music I mostly listen to at a glance really falls under two categories:

Dynamic music, this the stuff that has a reasonable range of volume that sounds good and sounds even better when you turn it up. Gives you space to think about the music and doesn't leave that feeling of fatigue after you've been listening for ten minutes: Off the top of my head.
A perfect circle, Ac Dc, Airbourne, Explosions in the sky Fat Freddy's Drop, Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden, Jack Johnson, Kora, Led Zeppelin, Malcolm Mclaren, Massive Attack, Metallica (black album etc.) Moby, Pink Floyd, Queen, Queensryche, Rage against the machine, Salmonella dub, Santana, St Germain, The album leaf, Tool and throw in a bit of classical music for good measure.

Compressed music, ie the kind of music that has little or no dynamic range and sounds quite good when you turn it up. Up to such point as fatigue starts to set in and give you a headache: again off the top of my head
Blindspott, Chevelle, Coldplay, Concord dawn, Disturbed, Dragonforce, Dream theater, Evanescence, Feeder, Foo Fighters, Fort minor, Goldfinger, Korn, Nevermore, Nine inch nails, POD, Papa roach, Shihad, Soilwork, System of a down, The bloodhound gang, The chemical brothers, The crystal method, The Mars volta, The Used, The white stripes.

So Totse, I don't know if this has been posted here before. But who here can recommend me some good music that has a decent amount of dynamic range to it, taking into account my preference in music as seen above.

Nice stereo by the way. That Pioneer is 50w per channel if I remember rightly...that's real 1970's watts and not the bloat-watts nowadays. Much better than the plastic Sony it replaced.

You might want to look into getting it recapped at some point though - it'll make it sound even better. Old electrolytics dry up, causing hiss and lack of bass clarity.

As for the compression, some bands release two versions of an album, one for playback on decent systems and the other is the compressed one put out to mass market. I can't remember the few that do offhand, but you're lucky if it happens to be a band you like.

Frank Zappa. Just about anything. He was freakishly meticulous about sound quality and it shows.

And Opeth is pretty god damn compressed, really.

If you like Massive Attack, give Sincere Trade a listen - their stuff is rather hard to find, but they do have a MySpace with a few tracks you can sample.
