View Full Version : creating steam

So i am going on a trip this winter with a few friends and we are renting out a house. Previously we have had hotel rooms and one of the things we like to do is steam up the bathroom and turn it into a sort of sauna. The problem is that hotels have endless water heaters whereas in a home we wont have anything near the size (thus running out of hot water). My question is what is the best way to rapidly build up steam. I have googled around and come up with a few things but nothing that is very solid. So far my ideas are open the windows so the room is cold, then shutting them again and running the hot water. Any ideas?

Maybe the same way an actual sauna does? Seriously making steam isn't that difficult all you need is heat and water.

You can buy nebulisers and that which jsut make steam so people with respiratory diseases can have a mellowed out, moist air to breathe... maybe a couple of those in thwe room?
Get one of those cheap electrical hot/cooking plates.
Place a few bricks on the plate.
Pump in some power.
Throw some water on the bricks.
Enjoy your sauna.
Also, unplug the device from far away, dont try to turn the power knob down. You might get zapped fataly.'
But the ideaworks and has been tested.

Why do I have a feeling this is about covering the smell of pot?

its not about covering up the smell actually. the point is to create a sort wet sauna, if we wanted to smoke we would just go outside?

1. Attain Fossil Fuels.
2. Burn the fossil fuels underneath a large supply of water to boil it.
3. Steam evolves...
(optional steps follow)
4. Use steam to turn large paddlewheel connected to ac generator
5. ????
6. Profit.

I coulda sworn I had that idea once, but I was thinking about putting it onto a sort of horseless wagon that runs on rails.
Anyways, although the hot plate idea is a good one what I am asking is more concerned with the ambient air temperature. Clarified, we will be having hot water coming out of the showerhead. Should we keep the bathroom warm with the heater while doing this or might that dry out the air, should we open the window before we do this so the bathroom is as cold as the outside? (there will be snow on ground)

I would use the heater. If its a radiator-type heater you could even put the water and hot plate on it to save energy. The whole point of this is to do it efficiently, right? Thats why you don't just leave the hot water running? If the bathroom has a door to outside you could build a fire outside and use it to heat coals, and rotate coals while splashing hot water on them in the bathroom, like a real sauna. I'm not sure how well that would work, just brainstorming.

I was thinking about heated rocks, but where to put them? My best solution is a pot (like for boiling water or stews or whatever) with the rocks inside on some plywood in the shower so it wont burn the bottom of the shower.

A pot would be a good idea, on something to insulate it, like some bricks.

One thread is enough, no need to go making duplicates everywhere.

I was thinking, as mentioned, bricks in a fire for an hour - that's the traditional way. just carry them in in a metal container with something safe to stand it on (i think its best to drill holes in the bottom rather than immersing the rocks with water, you ladle it on as needed, thus creating a bigger surface area of water to stone - You will need back ups and some rocks will hold heat better than others - what about volcanic rock - isn't that meant to be good/big surface area? )
However, what about 'charging' the room first with a kettle with the lid off?
brake open a microwave and point the emiter at the bath tub!

hah, I wasn't stalking you. I came into labtips and saw that you had posted. Lab tips is one of the forums I normally view but rarely post in. I have a chemistry hobby, hence my curiosity.
