Just a small problem, ive been asked to get some copper wire in sizes 24 and 20 calibre. Its for a demonstration at a conference, and the guy is from mexico, so i assume it is a standard measurement scale over there.

I'm in australia, and i have no idea what it actually is. can anyone explain how big it is or tell me what the units are? (all google searches just turn up stuff about bullets)

edit:
no replies needed, i realised its the same thing

try searching it as wire GAUGE. I think that might be the problem, http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm
There you go.

Hopefully your job security doesn't depend on this realization.
Because caliber and gauge are quite different.

nah, it was all fine. i had realised that the sizing was the same for bullets and wire (ie, 20 calibre is the same size for both).

what did surprise me was the difficulty i had in finding copper wire thick enough, that wasn't insulated. most stores could offer thick insulated wire made up of many strands, or gave me the run around because i didn't want a commercial quantity.

in the end i found some in one of those cupboards in the basement of the department that looked like it hadn't been opened since the place was built. i am now in possesion of a few kilograms of scrap copper, which is shall put to good use.

Unless I'm missing something, the diameter of a 22 caliber bullet is not anywhere near 22 gauge wire.
Shotgun pellets relate to wire gauge, but not caliber.

Take a gander at a 50 caliber bullet.
