Picking up my new car tomorrow. :D

^ Feds in Town is annoying.
But at least he makes interesting posts.
Haven't been replying to a lot of threads in a week or two because there hasn't been much of particular interest to me.
Most people come and go for days or weeks at a time.

^ yeah I go through phases of not posting for weeks. It's just because I'm at work all day and at the pub all night.
Well not anymore, moving back to my parents house for six months or so, until I get my uni application done properly.

Eh, it's always been that way for me. I just pop my head in when there's a good technical discussion I can contribute too.
I'm here still, it's just that I'm now at uni which means less time to do stuff like Totse.
Expect the occasional long-ass post in the subwoofers sticky whenever I learn something new though. :D
Speaking of which...Nereth, you haven't posted many technical descriptions how something works for some time. I like reading those.

Someone needs to hurry up and open a discussion on a topic I am interested in.
Then they have to say something wrong.
Then I'll start :)

Yes, I love it. Best public saying behind referring to a tight joint or lid as 'tight as a ten year old'.
I still post here on a daily basis.

I'm still here. In fact only a few days ago I was having a heated discussion in a thread.
But, I tend to come on totse less when I'm drunk, and that's the only time I argue. In fact, only last night were me and my mate arguing about the death penalty and imperial versus metric. However, I'd had a bottle of rum, so I lost.

Well, what is a flat shape that provides a high amount of torsional stiffness? A rectangle that's boxed a few times? Edit: Boxed or rounded tubing? Channeled tubing?

Round beams give you the best torsional stiffness.
Round beams also have the highest minimum stiffness in bending about all axes perpendicular to their length.
However if you are only interested in bending about one axes, you can use an I beam. If you are interested in bending about two perpendicular axes, a box-section beam.

Well is there an advantage to C-channel over boxed in overall strength or is it just lightness and strength in two directions?

For bending? I haven't thought about them previously but I can see it being just as bad if not more worse than I beams for bending about an axis parallel to the 'web', and for bending in the same way as a web, I imagine it would be similar, except that a significant moment would be generated between the web and the ends.
Probably.

Ah thanks. In return, welding porn.
Reason I ask is because I read an AD for a new GMC Sierra with that stupid "You don't need an advanced engineering degree to understand this ,but it helps" in which they use such sophisticated terms as "torsional stiffness" and "ride". They actually called a boxed body-on-frame truck a "sophisticated design", at which my bullshit detector exploded.

My stepdad's dad died so now I have a double garage with insulation, electrics, water, even a bloody phone line... time to buy me a project 2-door Avenger, Rover V8, 5-speed gearbox, paint it black with white stripes down the sides, black leather interior, polished slotmags, sports suspension, lpg conversion, electric windows (don't ask why, I just really want them), a starter button on the steering wheel...

I'm a big fan on 2 door Avengers, I think I've mentioned it before?
You mention It has Chrysler logos all over it.....therefore it deserves a Chrysler engine, yeah?
Kidding - I rather like the Rover engine, compact, light, easy to work on. Perfect for a smaller car.
Please change the intake manifold and Seriously Ugly Carbs on it. (if you use the early one):(

A Hemi probably would fit in the engine bay, but it'd be a ridiculous amount of work, and it would weigh the front of the car down way too much for my liking.

That was two cars ago!
I spent all my money on getting it through the MOT (never got around to MOTing it), new struts, TCAs, trailing arms, brake pipes all round, welding and shit
Then had no money for rent, so I had to sell it

Then the price of that model goes up by shit loads within a couple of years.
I miss my Valiant VJ 2 door.
Ohhh Happy times.
Sorry to hear about your car dude.:(

4.1cc of 6cyl raw under nourished gas sucking power.
(Although! its easy to put an 8 in it)
I'm hoping some Ford nut with a Valiant will swap me for it.
Oh yeah! I have an 89 Corolla Hatch also,
What I use to run around on with the price of gas and all.

^ strange, I know there's a 3-door and 5-door Rolla hatch and a saloon in the US, but mine is a 5-door liftback which has the same profile (roughly) as the saloon... did you get that over there?

^ yep that's the one, except he has funky teardrop-style alloys. Glad it's not the incredibly ugly 5-door hatch.
In other news, I almost stacked the Rolla the other day. Going along Braxsted Park Road (along the wall of Braxsted Hall if you're into english country manors, whatever) a bit too fast, and I had forgotten the exact route of the road. I saw part of an obscured sign and muttered 'eh?' as I flashed past at about 65, then turned a sharp bend and saw the T-junction that the sign was obviously referring to... so I slammed on the brakes and the car enters a nasty 4-wheel skid and the road bears to the right slightly, one wheel went onto the gravel by the side of the road a bit (obviously forgot to pump the pedal, but I don't think it would have stopped me any faster) and I stopped just before the junction. Not that bad, but if there had been a car waiting at the junction I might have rear-ended him (although I probably would have actually noticed the junction a long way off)
So I need to:
Slow down
My car needs:
Fatter wheels with decent tyres
Essex county council needs:
To put bigger signs up on country roads

Speaking of T intersections and country roads, just this very afternoon I was almost in a sticky situation when I came upon the oldest Landrover I have ever seen, going so slow that it looked like it wasn't going at all on a narrow country road.
Came up on me real quick seeing as these roads in particular are long straight (but lots of crests) and often deserted, and most people do 130km/h. So when I glanced ahead and saw a pizza cutter tyred Landy appear over the next crest I slowed down to about that speed (130km/h). I totally didn't notice that the Landrover was sitting on about 20km/h until I was almost inside the cabin with the driver.
A couple kilometres later (in the several lifetimes long meantime, while following the Landrover, I was kicked back with my window rolled down and arm on the sill at a crawl) we came to a T intersection which is in between a blind corner and a crest.
This wally in front of me, seemingly never changing out of second gear the whole time I have been following, idles out into the middle of the intersection, and without thinking (too impatient after seeing that god damn archaic dome blinker lazily indicate that he was going the same was as me) I crawled out after him not a couple feet off his bumper.
Then he slows down even further, and I realise my situation and slam the car into reverse and back it up out of the intersection just seconds in time to save my arse from being a feature on the grill of a Fairlane (Fucking huge, and don't stop well), which rocketed around the corner and made clouds of dust billow from the shoulder as the driver tried to dodge the Landrover going a tortoises pace where two narrow high speed country roads converge.
It was really that close.
P.S. I also noticed that old Landrovers aren't all that big.
