But I'm not telling you what it is until I pick it up tomorrow...

I'll give you some clues:

It's as old as I am.
It cost under £500.
It's remarkably sensible, for me at least.

Similar silhouette to a mk1 214... but no. This thing has build quality muthafuckaaa

Nope. More common and boring than that. Old saabs have a way more distinctive profile anyway :D

Toyota Corolla? That's what the outline looks like...ish.

^ you bastid.

I was going to post some dingbat clues but you got it. Well done.

£375 of Toyota's finest boring car. Not bad with 7 months tax and test. Only a little 1.3 so insurance was £400 and fuel economy is good. Has a wicked houndstooth pattern interior and central locking! The guy was a bit of a dude as well, he picked me up from a station in the middle of nowhere, we went back to his and looked at his cool Datsuns, then he gave me a lift to Leeds station, and he threw in his iPod adapter for the stereo.

It even has an 'economy gauge' which is a green LED and a red LED. When you're driving normally, the green LED is lit, and when you hammer it, the red LED is lit. Amazing stuff, Toyota, keep it coming...

Hah! This car isn't half bad for a Brit to drive around Britain in. Looks immacculate even if it is mundane. And no power steering either, just how Frinks likes it.

Yay. :D

Nice car for £500 by the way - the body looks very straight and with only 41k on the clock I think you got a good 'un. Plus, it's black. ;) My friend's mum has had a 1988 Corolla since new and it's never had any major problems...I think the biggest thing it's been to the garage for was a bad alternator.

When I was looking for a car I found some very dodgy people, so it sounds like you got lucky with an awesome guy. One person trying to flog me a tired Renault 5 tried to convince me that the fact it wouldn't start was down to a bad fan belt. (it wasn't caused by a slipping belt not charging the battery as it happily turned over, just didn't fire)

I was thinking mk.3 XR3i.

That would have been better :(

frinkmakesyouthink

Yeah I didn't think I could go far wrong with a 41k corolla. There's a little bubbling around the rear arches but they are solid and I'll fix em up before winter. For £375 it's really pretty good.

I don't think I could have picked up an XR3i for anywhere near that money :P not unless it was a proper snotter

I got a decent 90-spec mk.4 XR3i for £600 a few year ago. Spent just over £400 on a proper go over which put it in almost pristine condition :D

Nice, £500. Toyota's have quite safety so any asshole can crash and you'll be alive. Hopefully his car is a cut-and-shut and he'll die. MUHAHAHA. Anyway, congrats on the new car.

AHEM it was £375 not £500.

Thanks anyway. I'll get pics up tomorrow if I get home while it's still light.

Psh. You're not cool enough to rock an Mk1 Jetta. You probably could have gotten one for around that too.

By that rationale the only cool VWs are the sports cars. So that makes... oooh, none of them.

If I had a penny for every time I saw a Beetle/Golf/Jetta either rusted as fuck, painted pastel blue or slammed so hard it can't drive over anything but a flat sheet of glass, I'd be rich.

16v GTI or 1.8T swaps are getting pretty common in mk1 Jettas, though. 180 hp in 200 lbs = fuckin fast

I think the rear end actually looks pretty good.

Plans are: take off the red pinstripe and see if I can get some original Toyota hubcaps. There are a few bits where it's starting to rust around the arches, I'll sort that before winter really sets in, and the boot struts don't work so I'll replace them. I might see if I can pop a few of the dents out.

Only 42k and really clean inside too. I've racked up 400 miles in it already (trip to Essex and back) and it only used perhaps £25 in petrol. It's pretty spacious as well. And the heater is excellent.

You don't find corollas over here with that kind of mileage, it looks as though you got an awesome deal on it.

what's the interior like?

^ grey houndstooth pattern. Quite cool actually. You could make a very fashionable coat out of it.

Plastics are black and good quality (much better than a lot of modern cars). Has original casette player (I have one of those casettes that you can run your MP3 player through which is pretty good). I've got a couple of halfway decent 6x9s which I'll hide in the boot somewhere (I don't want to cut into the parcel shelf) because the factory speakers are a bit tinny. I'll probably put a modern CD player in, too (I've got two decent Kenwoods just sitting on my shelf...)
