View Full Version : Should OI have a Beer and Wine sticky?/What stickies would YOU like to see in OI?

I can't seem to make a poll, so I guess this will have to suffice.
There's a thread about knives and there's a thread about cigars. Both being broad and widely talked about topics. So why not an official thread for beers and wines? Wine is a subject many talk about and many wish to learn about, and beer is just as popular and diverse now as wine is when it comes to matching flavours with your food. So, should we have a thread where we can talk about wines and beers, and review the ones we've tried etc? I think it'd be a good step.
Also, are there any stickies you'd like to see made? Perhaps one solely to talk about restaurants and our reviews and experiences there, suggestions and tips etc? That's another one I'd like to see. OI's a pretty busy forum now with a set following of regualrs and a decent supply of casual readers. Perhaps it's time we offered something more to them and something more for ourselves?

Why do you ask? It's not like you'll be the one to sticky it, in case you hadn't remembered you ARE NOT A FUCKING MODERATOR AND YOU NEVER WILL BE.
A restaurant review sticky could be of interest.
I don't think Beer and Wine or any of the foods should get a sticky. I'm not a fan of "official" threads when they aren't strictly seen as necessary. It's nice to be able to just discuss things as they arise on a topical basis.

Some subjects are so frequent and/or specialised though that they warrant a thread of their own. I don't really see it as a problem. We have plenty of beer threads made all the time here, and some occasional wine ones. I don't see the problem with having a sticky for them. It's a popular and varied topic.
I would really like to see a restaurant one.

It's just that we wouldn't see the beer and wine threads if there were a sticky. Sometimes it's nice to have that variety, rather than just one encompassing thread. It's not a problem, but having a variety of threads leaves each one to go in a different direction.
The restaurant one sounds excellent. It could be quite useful for travelers.

I think a restaurant review one is great.
A general alcohol one, not so much. I think Sticky threads should be used for providing helpful information(i.e. knives or getting into cigars).
There'd really be no advice with regards to alcohol.
Then again, I'm generally opposed to the idea of sticky threads in the first place, especially in low traffic forums like this one.

Well, I've gone ahead and made one anyway. So post away if you feel so inclined. Hopefully someone will sticky it eventually.

toothless, just start a review a booze thread. it does not have to be official or anything, if it is a well liked topic folks will post in it, an eventually a dialog will start.

now hurry up bitch.
I'll weigh in, as I'm currently the only active moderator here (sambob's demodding and jackketch's connectivity problems making it a matter of circumstance rather than my personal preference).
As far as booze goes, I don't see it being all that beneficial, since we have several threads at any given time going on that rarely get past a second page. Someone pops in, asks about a certain style of beer, a cocktail, or a spirit, and the conversation fizzles out pretty quickly. A stickied thread would likely be underutilized.
Insofar as a restaurant review thread, I think the current one is doing just fine, but I don't, at present, see any particular reason for a sticky on it since it's been bumped to the first page pretty consistently (and anyone who can't be bothered to scroll a couple pages back to find their favorite thread isn't going to get sympathy from me).
I'm with napoleon; I don't care for an inordinate amount of stickies. The current two have been there for quite a long time (or their first incarnations, anyway), and while the knife thread moved slowly, the cigar thread is pretty active, warranting it's sticky as far as I'm concerned. Both provide information that is rather all-encompassing, which, given the complexity of the subjects, seems appropriate. The overall brevity of booze questions in this forum seem to suggest that perhaps the current system is fine as it is.
That being said, if I see an overall consensus that we'd prefer a sticky, I'll get to it.
I offered the option to limit it to beer and wine since those are rather complex subjects. Spirits, I think, can be pretty concisely described and discussed, but there's a whole world of wines and beers out there to delve into.

i wont mind seeing a general alcohol thread
Could they still be discussed outside of the sticky?
There has never been a problem with OI having too many threads about the same thing. It really seems unnecessary. At the moment, there's only one alcohol-related thread on the first page.

It should be more of a "how to make xyz cocktail" and "i made xyz cocktail so here it is" sort of thread, aswell as people who work in bars who want to tell us their little secrets, and of course post reviews on alcohols, such as (price; size; taste; smell), stuff like that. And links...

I don't see the point in having a beer sticky, but a wine "tutorial" would be a great idea. A subsection of it could be devoted to basic beer information too, if needed.

I would be against a beer/wine review sticky.
Yes there are a lot of threads about them, but putting it all in to one sticky just makes the thread so convoluted with all sorts of non sequiturial stuff.

Half is not an overall consensus, and the idea still hasn't been stickeyed yet. Like it or not you will never contribute to totse, nor will you ever be a mod, unless by "contribute" you mean provide us with a good abdominal workout.

Wow, you've got them saved in notepad ready to copy and paste them at a moment's notice!!! LOL, queer. Like it or not, everyone will always hate you here. You will never be a moderator. Why don't you get a fucking hobby or something, why do you take this website and your reputation so seriously?
And you're only leading by twelve percent. Actually only two percent technically.

Toothless, if you do make a sticky, can you make sure to weed out all of the unimportant information? I (and I would guess most other posters) hate sifting through long, cluttered, confusing stickied threads. I'd suggest making an individual thread for beer, wine, and booze, asking knowledgeable members to post helpful info, and then merging the threads into one, locking it, and editing it so that it's organized and without clutter.
What do you think?

There's always more information and new things to add; that's what makes this an interesting forum, there are so many facets. Having threads pop up and fall away as interest in certain facets comes and goes is a good thing.
If you want to know something, make a thread. If you want to share something, make a thread. If you want to try something new and need some thoughts on how to get there, make a thread. There's nothing wrong with letting topical interest drive things.
---
That level of editing/deleting posts was frowned upon.

I'm not saying that the sticky would have to be never-changing, but if they do make a sticky, then I don't want it filled with stupid, off-topic bullshit. It should be a useful, concise reference tool, and there should be some moderation of the information posted there so that we know it's legit.
With something like wine, where people are constantly wondering "Where the hell do I start?", a reference thread would be helpful.

thats great, but ppl are from diffrent places, so the only ones reviewed would be global eg mcdonalds.
Stickies for stuff like that are stupid and always get ignored.
OI doesn't get enough traffic to require a sticky for this kind of shit. Merging a few of the related alcohol threads on the first page should do more then enough.

This site gets a fair bit of traffic. If you were posting here more often, leaning how to cook better like you're supposed to, maybe you'd know.

If by site you mean forum, then yeah it does.
But it's not like SG or HB where threads are flying off the page every day. A thread made can still be found on the front page weeks later if it's a good one. Shit, even if it's not a good one it's still on the front page.
And I could out cook you any day Dirt Rash.
Well, hell, it's been nearly a week, and by a margin of 2 to 1 against, I think we'll be skipping it for now. Feel free to make threads of this nature, because it's all good information.
