The Mars Volta is a "duo" compromised of Cedric Bixler/Zavala and Omar Rodriguez/Lopez. Two bad ass dudes who make bad ass music. It is the lead singer and lead guitar player of At The Drive-In. Since their breakup, they have made like 4 albums and 2 eps or something? But they work on the lyrics and music together, and record and tour with "The Mars Volta Group." They are nucking futs. Check em out.

i think they are overrated and suck balls, they could be cool if they had improvised solos and no vocals, but they don't so they suck

Great band. i've seen em live, and they blew me away. although at the time, the only album out was francis the mute. Omar knows nothing about theory, and is fucking amazing.

also john frusciante of the chili peppers is in the band. great stuff. Amputechture is a scarrrry album.

no. first, frances the mute was their second album. its not gonna be "the only one out at the time". second, john frusciante simply lends his guitar playing to one or two of their albums, and is not an actual bandmate. and three, please tell me then, what do you know of theory?

i think that they are insanely amazing. sometimes i feel like they may try to hard to be "unique" but hell, what can you do when you want to make something original and fucking epic. basically, sometimes i feel like they try too hard. which is awesome. getting the point?

I think The Mars Volta is one of the greatest bands ever.

Except when they're live... that's kind of terrible.

The Mars Volta are fucking awesome. I saw them in concert a few years ago, they put on an amazing show when I saw them, they did stuff from ditc and ftm albums. For those of you that haven't heard of the mars volta or have seen this video, check it out. Trippy shit!

the guitar solo's are about as good as leroi moore's solo's with dave matthews. And I doubt the vocalist for mars volta has a bigger range than some actual trained vocalists, and even if he did it doesn't change the fact he sounds like a whiney little bitch.

I only saw about 5 or 10 mintues of the Mars Volta a couple years ago at the Big Day Out, they seemed pretty tight live. But I was there to see another, What album/s do you guys recommend?

I've never been a big fan of them. They are all amazing technique-wise, especially Thomas Pridgen (the drummer), but I agree that they try too hard to be unique.

They need to relax a little bit when they play. It's not about playing every crazy lick you can in one song.

I was reading an article in some guitar magazine with Omar from the volta, and he's talking about how much his studio engineer hates him, because he'll record a guitar part, and the tech will be like "Yeah, the tone on that sounds good", and Omar will go "Sweet, so we're going to add a flanger, chorus, some delay, completely remove one of the eq frequencies, and play the track backwards." And the engineer will just pull some of his hair out and start plugging in effects pedals.

But, they're a kickass band. De-loused, Amputechture, and Bedlam are all fucking sweet albums. I wasn't all that hot on Frances the Mute, it was good, but not as good as the others.

That new drummer they have is pretty boss too.

i'm kind of mixed on the mars volta. there are times where i'm like, damn this band is fucking awesome and there are other times where i'm like damn, there are seven people on stage and none of them are playing remotely the same song. overall i guess my thing about them is that it seems that you have to sit through like five minutes of dissonant, weird, atonal hardcore rock noise to get to the three minutes or so of awesome badass jamming. some of there songs are too much architecture for there own good, but that being said i give them respect for being one of the few bands today doing something cool and original.

Have a few of their albums but only really like a handful of their songs, I think a lot of their songs can be pretentious and unnecessarily long.

why so argument prone? what are you even arguing about? i think you misinterpreted what i wrote, or something. i was simply stating when i saw them, frances was as far as they had gotten on their discography. second, john frusciante is IN mars volta. omar and cedric are the main permanent members of the band, but frusciante is part of "the mars volta group", he has been on every album since frances, you fool. i've been listening to them since the tremulant EP, before deloused even came out.

seriously, why are you arguing about? i know enough about theory man, i know enough. but knowing theory has nothing to do being able to READ interviews where Omar states he is completely self taught. i could probably talk about theory and regurgitate facts about it all day, but that doesnt change the fact that omar is a better guitar player than i.

anyway, he has a very tritone heavy style like fripp. i prefers frusciante's style though, WAY more melody. omar has even contributed to recent chili peppers albums.

Seen them live twice. Was a huge fan of At the Drive-in, but sadly never saw them as that act live. I once saw them while on acid on 4/20. It was a good time.

I have all their albums, and they all blow At the Drive-in out of the water (eh... maybe not in/Casino/out). I also refuse to listen to the most current album, but that's a tl;dr moment.
