A car battery is 12VDC. A pc runs on AC. You are not going to transform that.

Buy a generator, you can get little 10CFM jobs cheap as fuck.

Thanks for enlightening me guys. I've found some pretty cheap generators (gasoline) with 800 "absolute" wattage output.

I think I'll get one. I could pretty much run this PC for around a couple of weeks before I needed to pay the dollar fifty needed to refuel. What I don't understand is why people such as students or broke asses don't try and power most of their shit from a generator? It might be a little uncomfortable having a generator in one's bed room but why the hell not? It would be cheaper than hell.

Actually, the output of a PC's power supply is DC. Get one of these: http://www.mini-box.com/M1-ATX-90w-Intelligent-Automotive-DC-DC-Power-Supply

It's a DC-DC converter which takes in 12v from the battery and regulates/converts it to the 3 voltages needed for the PC. Much more efficient than using an inverter to take it from 12v to 240v (or whatever) mains, then using a normal PC power supply to bring it down from 240v to 12v and below again.

And the reasons people don't put generators in their room is that they're much more expensive to run. Maintainence costs will be pretty high as service intervals are frequent and MTBF rates aren't anywhere near as good as a big, slow turning generator. You can't hear yourself think either...literally. Little generators are very noisy, especially when you're in the same room as one.

10CFM? Cubic feet per minute? Or is it another rating I haven't heard of?

You dumb fuck. My solution to the problem works perfectly well (allowing a PC to be powered from a car battery) and I know exactly what I said and how it works. Please ask me to explain any stage of it and I will be more than happy.

Idiot. Oh, and MTBF? Mean Time Between Failures. Look it up, clitface.

So take your pick (http://www.smps.us/power-inverter.html)

The point being, yes, you can transform DC->AC.
