Well as I sat having a lonely cigarette I decided to see if the lighter would sort of self torch without creating a spark from the tobacco that was burning in my cigarette igniting the gas like it does next to a naked flame...and nothing.
Can someone tell me why it didn't flame up?
My guess is not enough oxygen, the combustible matter is burning away and there is gas and with those elements and reactions happening I don't think there's room for fire?
I dunno that's why I'm asking :p
You need a naked flame or something very hot to make fire.
A cigarette is neither.

So you discharged the butane and directed it towards the ember on your cigarette?
The ember isn't hot enough to break the covalent bonds in the hydrocarbons. However, the sparks from your flint are 1200+ degrees Fahrenheit and are well qualified to do so.

well, butane (which is lighter than air) doesnt need that high of a temperature to ignite. though smoldering tobacco might not be hot enough.
to improve your odds, i would try
1) turning your pipe upside down or to the side. this is because butane rises, and will better contact the tobacco if positioned correctly
2) inhale while doing so. you would suck in gas and oxygen. the extra oxygen will fan the embers, causing it to temporarily increase in temperature. beware of inhaling gas though, we dont want you to end up like sylvia plath

I will try this one right now for the fucking sake of fucking boredomness.
I will smoke a skizzert, the direct the butane right under the cherrie and deeply inhale.
My colleagues say it will end in no flame but coughing could arise.

It was a no go on the flame and the coughing.
I fired my colleaugues and destroyed half the lab.
