Rice is an amazing food stuff: cheap, dense, nutritious, and extremely versatile. As we all know, several billion people rely on rice as their main food source. Of course, it can be just plain sucky if the cook doesnt know what he/she is doing.

For the last 24 hours, Ive been stuck in my dorm room because I came back from Thanksgiving Break a day early. Rice has been in every meal I have had in this time period and I do believe I have come up with an AMAZING and simple recipe:

A serving or two of Calrose rice prepared in the microwave.
Half of a 14oz can of Diced Tomatoes.
Cheese - optional, any variety
Pepper
Hot sauce

This shit has awesome. I enjoyed it just as much for a late night snack as I did for breakfast. The rice has the carbs and most of the nutrition. The canned tomatoes provide a nice salty taste and some vitamins. Cheese has fat and some protein. And at about $5 for an entire day's worth of food, I think Im going to have to bring this recipe along on my next outing in the woods.

Anyone else got some good, simple rice recipes that can be prepared with a minimal cooking apparatus (camping/backpacking/dorm room)?

rice does rule. i like to make fried rice with whatever is kicking around in my fridge whenever i cant think of something to cook.

basically all you do is scramble an egg an reserve it. then toss what ever veg an protein you have in your fridge into your hot wok/pan. season it with sauce an spices. i like to use atleast garlic, chili, ginger, an soy sauce. but really you can use what ever you have on hand. then combine the egg, cooked rice, an stir fried veg/protein together. again you can use anything, i have made continental versions with tyme garlic an worchester sauce. so just be creative. remember fried rice does not have to be asian.

*sigh*

What is it about Totse that brings out the stupidity in people? Why can't they just behave like proper little gentlemen, ladies, hermaphrodites, and general shitheads?

On topic, I tend to serve rice about once a week. Long grained, cooked usually in chicken stock with a myriad of herbs and spices. One of my favorites is a simple herb rice with the chicken stock, a quarter teaspoon of basil, oregano, thyme, a clove or two of minced garlic, and a tablespoon of butter. Brought to a high boil, dropped to a simmer, and simmered while covered tightly for 25 minutes or so. Excellent stuff with pan roasted chicken or pork chops, depending on your seasoning of the meat.

I like to brown some vermicelli in butter and then cook it with a long grain rice in either chicken or beef stock with garlic salt, pepper, and some variable spices. Makes a really good rice on it's own or can be served nicely with some kind of meat. I prefer to eat it with cajun style black beans and yogurt.

This is pretty close to what I do with rice. With the right herbs and seasonings rice can make an excellent sidedish. Comparable to the mighty potato.

Nothing is comparable to the starchy goodness of that tuber!
