Why are there so many people growling? The best vocalists in my opinion are the few who do something else.
I recorded myself doing like a really loud whisper, and I thought it sounded really good. I think growling sounds stupid. thoughts?

I like the mid range growl with a slight black metal rasp over it. Sort of like the dude from dimmu borgir.

I'm a fan of the harsh but still easy to decipher. (For want of a better word)
Think older Ensiferum, Naglfar (The guy they have now), At The Gates, Dissection (Reinkaos), etc.

Depends on the metal. Normally I prefer the sort of classic Dickinson-style vocals, though I would prefer the indiscernable throut work if the music is really heavy. Death Metal shouldn't have clean vocals.
I'll tell you what I don't like: Dave Mustaine. I can't stand his voice work. It always sounds like he's straining, like he's trying to force out a giant turd. It works with a couple songs, and that's no downer on Megadeths music itself, but I really don't like the vocals.

Mikael Åkerfeldt. He can growl and sing in a soft voice pretty well, IMO.
I think Rob Halford has one of the best metal screams, Conrad Lant for yells, Dio would be the best melodic singer, Chuck from Death for growls and the guy from Alchemist for an all rounder.

Lord Worm.
Lord Worm is a nasty singer.
But, the first time I ever heard cryptopsy, I heard the song "Crown of Horns", in which the vocals sound like cookie monster being executed in the electric chair.
It's awesome.

I might be the only one, but I find that Iron Maiden's vocals get boring after a while. Go figure.
The one thing that's probably alienated me from metal is that, even with a lyric sheet, the words are still indiscernable. Not saying that cookie monster vocals are ALWAYS shitty, in the right place they can be awesome. But when all the songs sound the same singer-wise, why bother?
Haha, I always thought Slayer sounded like they were horribly constipated, not so much for Megadeth. Still, both fantastic bands, who don't bank on being the most "brutal" thing ever.
At the risk of being called a faggot, I do like All That Remains and Killswitch Engage. The intro to "Not Alone" blew me away when I first heard it. And Killswitch can balance screaming and singing very nicely. But after every pre-pubescent teenager forms a XXCOREXX band with obnoxiously high vocals, I fucking raged. (*cough* BFMV *cough*).
I can dig the death metal, but fuck black metal and that abomination called "grindcore".
Also, Brokencyde is the death of music.

I never really liked Pantera's vocals. Everything else was great, and "Hollow" is a fucking masterpeice. I dunno. From what I heard, they apparently ripped off some other band when they created whatever "groove-metal" is.

I almost dont consider it metal if they dont growl at least a little bit. And I think its ok to like Killswitch Engage, their cover of Holy Diver was amazing.

This. His work in Opeth and Bloodbath are amazing. He has such a brutal but clear growl, and still retains a beautiful clean voice.

I like a deep yell. Like the guy is really pissed off and yelling like he means it.
See: Doom, Extreme Noise Terror, Extinction of Mankind.
There's also something about a high pitched, raspy voice that I like. Think Selfish and Blood Brothers.
But a growl like Death and Nausea are like, classic. Especially when it comes to metal.
Hansi Kursch.
I can dig it. Especially his layered vocals....So damn good.

Yeah, I find Dickenson can't do the Di'anno songs justice, the vocal style is just too different. Di'anno has a more rock'n'roll style of singing as compared to Dickenson's more Judas Priest influenced stuff. That and Iron Maiden and Killers are my 2 favourite Maiden albums.

Do you listen to alot of this type of metal?
I've always liked thrash and this 'groove' metal but never really known where to look. Metalheads say that Metallica is shit compared to other 'original' thrash bands but listening their suggestions I think they sound like Metallica has took the best bits from these bands.

I used to listen to alot of that kinda stuff a few years back, but I don't really listen to it much these days. Lately I've been more into stuff like Earthride (http://www.myspace.com/earthridedoom).
But most people will probably reccomend Slayer's Reign In Blood album when you ask for thrash metal. It's an alright album, really the only stand out tracks from it I thought were Angel of Death, Jesus Saves and Raining Blood, the others just sound too same-y to me. If you haven't heard it though I reccomend checking out Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss album, to me it's the best album they did.
I'll check this thread again tomorrow and see what else I can think of adding, but its 3am at the moment and I need to have a shower, watch this movie I hired and go to bed. But if you can list a few bands in the style that you like I'll try reccomending you some other stuff.
EDIT: Just had a quick look, one thrash band I quite like is Amboog-A-Lard, they only did one album called A New Hope. I'm still having a look through my shit, but if I find anything else I'll let you know.

Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell)
Satyr Wongraven (Satyricon)

Dan Swanö (Nightingale, Edge of Sanity)
Paul Masvidal (Cynic)
JB Christoffersson (Grand Magus, Spiritual Beggars)

Kobi Farhi (Orphaned Land)
Nemtheanga (Primordial)
Devin Townsend (DTB, Strapping Young Lad)

You guys are a bunch of fags, if it isnt someone like Joe lynn Turner it isnt even metal!
Seriously though, Dave mustaine of today trying to sing like he did in the 80's is some of the worst vocals in present music.
I really like his vocals from the 80's though...

As soon as you said Slayer I thought Seasons in the Abyss :D
By far their most consistant album, Reign in Blood is so over rated.
Personally I wouldn't really call it thrash, my idea of thrash is in the vein of San Francisco thrash scene - Exodus, Metallica, Megadeth, and then onto stuff like Anthrax and Pantera.
I've heard of Amboog-A-Lard, no-one has ever really rated them much though, which is unfortunate now that I'm listening to them, I really like that guitar 'chugging' sound :D

I came across Amboog-A-Lard a while back when I was looking at what bands Jeordie White has been in.
Have you heard much german thrash? I quite like Sodom, their Persecution Mania and Agent Orange albums are my favourites. Kreator also aren't too bad, but their singer isn't very good. So far the only albums by them I've heard have been Pleasure To Kill and Enemy of God.
I'll keep looking through my music to see what I can find.

Took me a few seconds to think who Jeordie White was there, Twiggy Ramirez.. wouldn't of imagined him to be in a thrash band. Now that I think of it though, I've read Marilyn Mansons biography so that's maybe how I've heard of the band but never heard anyone rate them.
I fucking love Kreator, a friend gave me their live album a few years ago and it's actually one of the best metal albums I've heard :D
There's nothing like hearing The Patriarch guitar piece then into Violent Revolution.. pure gold :D
I had a listen to Earthride, they seem abit grimey to me.. like stoner metal, sort of somewhere between Orange Goblin and Black Sabbath
Sodom are pretty intense! Had a listen to a few songs from those albums on youtube, got a few albums on the download now. They do some pretty good covers aswell - Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, etc.
I'm all for European metal, just as long as it doesn't get too close to stuff like My Dying Bride, 69 Eyes, Withing Temptation, etc
Do you rate Annihilator much?
What about Cro-Mags? I know they're hardcore punk, but most people put them into the thrash category.

What's the name of that Kreator live album? I might have to look into it. And Earthride are pretty cool I reckon, but I like stoner metal with that kinda bluesy sound to it, but it's hard to find good stuff like that.
Annihilator I like, Alice In Hell is a great album, the only one I've heard so far though. I've got Never Neverland somewhere on the computer, but I haven't listened to it yet. But I haven't heard Cro-Mags, I'll have a look into them some day.
Do you happen to use msn at all, and if so could I get your email address? That way I don't have to derail this thread too much.

The Kreator album is called Live Kreator (painfully original, lol), it's 2 discs and is from their 2003 tour, so has all their big songs, so well worth the download.
Cro-mags are what people call 'cross-over thrash', like hardcore punk with thrash riffs.. much more of an easy going attitude.. less hate, lol.
I don't use msn, I do when I'm at home, but with using a university network the admin has blocked msn and anything 'illegal' like P2P download programs, etc
I've got a nice to do list of downloads here anyway, cheers for the recommendations :D

I'll have to check out the live album. Is there a particular Cro-Mags album you'd reccomend? And if you like crossover thrash, Stormtroopers of Death aren't bad, they mix alot of humour into the lyrics.
Fuck everyone.
That harsh deathcore growl that comes from gargling at the back of the throat is fucking awesome. Nothing can beat that.

I think most people will agree that their first two albums are the finest - The Age of Quarrel, and Best Wishes. Their later albums tend to steer towards the posicore / youth crew sort of hardcore punk.
Listening to some Stormtroopers of Death now, first song - Speak English or Die, haha.

Just thought of another thrash band that I quite like and highly reccomend, Venom. Their first few albums (from Welcome To Hell through to Possessed) are good and the last few they've done haven't been bad either (from Cast In Stone through to Hell). Don't know why I didn't think of them in the first place, they've been one of my favourite metal bands for years.

How the fuck can you call it vocals? It's just some douchebag growling into a mic over someone spazzing out on a double bass while the other people play their guitars as fast as they possibly fucking can.
It's annoying as balls, and stupid.
Metalfags should all just fucking die.

It is someone using their vocal chords in correspondance with the music..
Not all metal is the same, go listen to some Napalm Death and then some Iron Maiden and tell me that they sound the same.

Bruce Dickinson is the man
Jari from Wintersun and early Ensiferum. His growling is so excellent, it's really powerful. Also, the vocalist from Noumena kicks ass.
Fall of the Leafe had an excellent vocalist, who guested on a Noumena album...
Sonata Arctica's Tony Kakko is possibly the best male voice I've ever heard, he can growl better than most and then consistantly hit notes higher than Bruce. And he's flawless live.
I also like the vocals in Kalmah, they go hard.
Christian from SS is also really good, though I don't like him as much as some of my mates.
Of course, Michael from Opeth is a great metal voice. Just has to be mentioned.
Also, the vocalist from Katatonia. Really suits their style of music, gets the macabre feeling across really well.

Best I've heard from him was when he screams "WAR!" at the beginning of Clenching the Fists of Dissent.
And I contribute Jeff Martin, of Racer X. Case in point: "Superheroes".
