are fully automatic weapons like AK-47's and m16 legal for civilians in the USofA?

Yes. Although they do fetch a high price and a pretty lengthy process to obtain.

care to divulge in that process?

You apply on a form 4 with the BATFE, including two sets of fingerprint information and a mugshot, get your chief law enforcement official to sign saying he'll let you (supposed to say he has no reason to believe you'd misuse it, but hey), wait 3-4 months or so while a background investigation is completed, pay $200 tax and then inflated prices on pre-1986 NFA registered automatic weapons.

Then you realize how sad your life is after being denied a loan for your $16,000 m16a1.

And then realize you could have made a better quality firearm for 600 dollars.

Why not buy a quality suppressor for your firearm instead? You still get to play with a new toy (though admittedly it doesn't go 700 RPM), and it costs a shitload less.

You also don't need to notify the BATFE if you take it outside your state. Just make sure it's going to a state that allows them.

Whats what? A suppressor? A device that attaches to the end of the barrel to muffle the report (noise) of gunshots.

i watched this a few months ago, so i dont exactly remember, but i think the guy goes through the process of obtaining one legally.

oh yeah, and in one of the uncle bob's threads, i thought about a device that converts any semi auto with a pistol grip to full auto without any internal modification. perhaps you could make one yourself

The last I knew, MAC-10s were the cheapest full autos on the market. I think you can pick one up starting around $3K if I recall correctly. You can only own them in certain states though.

Suppressors are illegal in the United States unless authorized by BAFTE.

FYI, there used to be this guy who had a table at gunshows--he sold full-autos (machineguns, that is) as a private citizen--no background check, no paperwork.

All you needed was a few grand in cash and you were good to go.

And at the recent Colony High School fund-rasing bazaar, they were raffling off a Thompson. (The semi-auto milspec version.)

Two more reasons I love Alaska.

But... that's illegal. Even in Alaska, you're still part of the US...

What part of "thou shalt not infringe upon the right to bear arms" do you not understand? The background checks are what's illegal.

Ok allow me to reprhase.

Isn't that against the arbitrary laws of the current regime?

I just know that when the government has failed on its end on the social contract to provide adequate safety, then the citizen is morally entitled to procure whatever means necessary to ensure his own safety, no longer bound by the social contract.

We kind of covered the issues with that under the whole form 4 deal. And no, that is not correct. The BATFE only regulates suppressors for tax purposes, but your CLEO must sign off on it, and that assumes you're in a friendly state (being in Illinois, you're not), so even if the BATFE wanted to let you have them, it's more complicated than that.
