View Full Version : I hate Americans' conception of geography

America, Mexico, Europe, Africa, the middle east, and asia.

That's all there is. That's the whole world. Every one from every country has to fit somewhere in there, otherwise white people get confused as shit.

There are over a dozen latin countries that aren't mexico.

Europe and Asia are the same fucking landmass, don't call India a "subcontinent" just because it doesn't fit your absurdly simplistic view of "white people on the left, chinky-eyed people on the right"

Why is Europe always listed first on dictionary listings of continents, even though dictionaries are supposed to be alphabetical?

con⋅ti⋅nent   [kon-tn-uhnt] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. one of the main landmasses of the globe, usually reckoned as seven in number (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, and Antarctica).

Arabs are not Iranians or Pakis. Iranians are not Arab. Neither Iranians or Pakis speak Arabic.

You're just mad because people probably call you Mexican a lot, when you're really El Salvadorian. Yeah, dumb people (not necessarily white or American) are going to lump you in with the most visual Hispanic (is Hispanic even the right term, or is it Latino? Fuck this political correctness) group, which is Mexicans. Like your ass wouldn't be bitching about white people claiming heritage in all these little obscure European countries. "You're white. That's it," you'd tell them.

They never focused on world geography much in school. I had a geography fetish for some reason at an early age, and would like looking at atlases and maps, but I never remembered doing any of that in school. Why don't they teach it? Well I don't really know. It gets overlooked in the curriculum for some reason. There should be a better attempt at American geography too, as it is pathetic if an American cannot label all 50 states on a blank map of the country, though I will allow it if they switch New Hampshire and Vermont around by mistake, as I can never remember which is which.

Also, the term "middle east" is one from a European view. Does the middle east view itself as being in the "middle east?" Middle east compared to what? Europe.

Sometimes they deviate from alphabetical order and have to list things in order from best to worst.

Zay, totally agree.

It may be the educational system's fault, for not teaching enough...

It may be the teachers, for not being more attentive...

But do you know who's fault it absolutely is?

Society in general.

Kids probably get home, wolf down a bucket of fried chicken, wash it down with root beer, and then play fucking Xbox well into the night. And parents don't have the backbone to say know.

"Sure, I'll get you that ipod tomorrow!"
or
"I got you tickets to the Jonas Brothers concert!"

Parents have no discipline; they don't say NO. Every demand and whim of these prepubescent bastards is met with the utmost congruity by parents. A whole generation of pricks. I know it'd been said about every generation that they're worse than the last, but these fucks are ejaculating the frosting on the figurative cake that is the deterioration of society.

It's not that we're losing morals; that's bullshit. It's not because fags are marrying, and it's not because we aren't bombing the shit out of North Korea.

It's that American society today alienates those that posses knowledge other than the inner workings of Paris Hilton's vagina, and rewards those that know nothing with an esoteric concept of popularity and success.

Standing up against the asininity and cretinism of society is a death spell for anyone who has to deal with common social interaction, and it's this loom of fatuousness that hangs over society that threatens it.

Not to say we are a collective nation of vile or ignorant people; just to say that to fit social norms, many of Americans DO adhere to this.

While certainly many Americans don't know shit.

Do a man on the street quiz in different countries and you will probably find the same ignorance throughout the world.

hey i know my geography, and ethnicitys, and who's and whats of the yesterdays and todays of this planet...

but, that doesn't mean my fellow American's aren't incompetent in the subject. most of em your lucky if they can find their state on the globe. canada's always up, mexico's always down, and the middle east is the worlds oil pump. thats american geography in a nutshell..

god, don't ever expect em to find china or actually look where in the hell world events are actually happening...

I was in the state semifinals of the National Geographic Geography Bee for two years in a row. I was the only kid in my class who knew what the fucking Iberian Peninsula was. I was fucking 12 at the time that happened. It sickens me, how stupid Americans have gotten as far as Geography goes. We only care about ourselves and our fast food, apparently. When less than 1% of the adult American population can find Afghanistan on a world map, you KNOW that it's sad...

I will now respond by splitting up my answers into three parts, one for each poster

Mort: Watch Jaywalking. Need I say more.

Whocares: I rest my case

lostmyface: I didn't mean to imply that all Americans are stupid; certainly that would be self-contradictory. I meant to say that many Americans know less about the world around them compared to our other First-World brethren in Canada, Europe, and Oceania.

Umm.. the reason that I rant specifically about Americans is because those are the people I talk to on a daily basis. So maybe unga bunga in africa doesn't know his geography any better, that doesn't affect me at all because I'm hardly likely to meet him.

It annoys me when people stereotype America. I've met plenty of retards from all over, especially Mexico. Does that mean anything statistically? No.

I know my geography extremely well. It's just not apparently in most public education systems in the US. Big deal. Who's the leading biotech industry in the world? The US. Just because Singapore and Malaysia are starting to try and edge in (especially given lack of federal funding for new stem cell lines in the US) doesn't affect a statistical analysis. Maybe you interact with people who are lounging about instead of working or learning?

I hate stereotyping too, but the fact is: stereotypes exist for a reason.

Not ALL Canadians talk slowly and say eh, but there are definately more people in Canada like this than in most other countries.
Not ALL British people have bad teeth, however being in Britain will reveal that ALOT of them do.
Not ALL Americans are dumb, but there IS a disproportionately large amount of dumb people there.

Of course thats not saying that Americans are genetically different - we are all humans after all. There is no hard-wired, ingrained genetic code saying American=dumb. I think this is to blame on American culture.

I know America doesn't have its own culture/beliefs/morals, but it is a melting pot of blah blah blah we know what im talking about. And this is the problem! Everybody has different ideaologies so people aren't working towards a common goal. Without a goal, people live their lives like a chicken with his head cut off. This is when you get all the skinny white suburbanite kids who ruin their lives because they want to be like the nigger who they idolize. These kids are literally willing to throw away opportunities to learn and improve yourself to fit in or be cool in the eyes of people who did the same thing with the fads and trends of their day.

Being a rich country, so many young people in the USA do not realize the value of a dollar - they don't realize that you actually have to work for your money, that you can't just call mom and get a cash injection. The worst part about this is that being 'cool' wont get you a job. The people who you wanted to impress by skipping class and getting high all the time have probably by now realized that they SHOULD have been idolizing the nerds - who actually have their head screwed on straight. After the teenage angst and rebellion is over, so many people realize that they will never get back the opportunity to do things the 'right' way.

Anyways, im just rambling now, and i've forgotten the original purpose of my post. *checks*. Ah yes -

TL/DR: to conclude: Americans are stereotypically dumb because they are a melting pot with no strong unified values/morals, and so are willing to idolize anything the media says they should to fit in.

(didnt mean to single you out random_looney, i dont have beef, i just hate when people say "dont stereotype americans" when america is the land that invented stereotypes for every little thing!

You also forgot to mention that there are so many more Americans with internet and the like, and thus more dumb ones people tend to encounter.

I disagree with some of your cultural points, though, because Japan is the same sans melting, and no one says Asians are stupid.

I think the problem might lie with the American education system, I mean you guys over there have some of the best universities in the world, higher education in the US is extremely advanced and of excellent academic level, however everything before university sort leaves much to be desired.

I've met countless Americans, who were all very intelligent and in higher education, however they lacked a lot of knowledge that here in Europe is considered basic, in geography, history, etc.

I mean we spend so many years over here studying history and geography, plus latin, philosophy and foreign languages, and all of that before university.

There was a girl from my school who did a semester in Colorado in high school and said she was shocked at how easy their program was, over here we were translating Cicero from latin, reading Goethe in german and learning ancient greek history in detail.

She said that over there they were spending half their time doing sports or in the computer lab, and that the actual lessons were comparable to what we used to do in middle school.

Now I'm not saying that the average European is that more knowledged than the average American, a lot of people end up going to professional schools that teach you how to fix cars and stuff like that, but those that do graduate from high school should have a wider basic knowledge.

Zay, I'm afraid that despite your self-perceived intellect, you are by far one of the stupidest Americans I have ever encountered. Period. You may be able to form proper syntax and refrain from txtspeak, but that is only superficial my friend. You are not very intelligent at all.

Honestly education means fuck all. Lukazz has received one of the greatest in the world apparently yet he is still a definite contender for the dumbest motherfucker on totse award. I really was about as intelligent as you guys are today when I was 13-16.

Geography is useless. Latin is useless. Might be a great conversation starter (if you hang around nerds, which all of you certainly are). Despite the apparent superiority of non-USA education we are numero uno my friends and nothing will change that. Knowing how to exploit those around you is more important than your understanding of geography.

By the way Zay bravo on the racist connotations regarding white Americans and their understanding of geography. I'm sure your fellow mestizo's have got it all figured out. I'd much rather listen to a white person who doesn't know Iranians aren't Arabs/are white than a mestizo that thinks Spanish is a non-white language, that they are God's gift to the universe, etc etc.

I love how you just prove this thread's point, knowledge doesn't need to have the slightest practical use, you should learn for learning's sake.
