i would agree that starcraft is the most well made RTS. its got very different races whose units arent just parallels of each other, and the story is pretty good. and its got a good multiplayer base

i have my suspicions about SC2 though, im predicting it will be good, but will not live up to its hype, or SC1.

though my favourite RTS to play is still RA2

...Starcraft is the most popular RTS... but what makes it stand out from the rest outside it's immense korean popularity?

personally i prefer Supreme Commander:Forged Alliance over Starcraft.
or Warzone 2100 resurection project (google warzone resurection) to starcraft.

...but it's all matter of opinion. among micro games few games equal starcrafts balance and micro intense gameplay

C&C? so weak compared to SC, The need for micro is hardly there as much. My apm is 170 and I still am not that good at sc.

I agree SC2 will probably not be as good as SC1 , they are going to noob it down, include auto miner hack etc

Any Battle.netters here?

I think the name "Real Time Strategy" is too often a lie. There's hardly any strategy involved in these games.

Yeah, I loved the crap out of Starcraft and Brood Wars, but will the sequel live up to it's hype? It's not looking good so far (http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2008/10/11/starcraft-2-split-into-three-parts-terran-wings-of-liberty-zerg-heart-of-the-swarm-and-protoss-legacy-of-the-void.htm)...

You better not mean starcraft!

Does anyone play currently?

Most especially Starcraft. You don't win with strategy in Starcraft. You win by pointing and clicking faster than your opponents. It's always simply a matter of building a up a huge army and then swarming the enemy's base (extra points if he hasn't even built a barracks yet). In Starcraft, strategy is a waste of time because any attempts at strategy will usually just get your ass rushed and pwnt.

'Tis the same with pretty much all real time strategy games, but I think Starcraft is pretty much the worst when it comes to this.

Don't get me wrong. I love Starcraft. It's a great game, but I just can't call it strategy.

what would yo consider strategy then?

I find Sc to be quite strategic, on top of the need to be "fast"

One of the best players i play with has avg apm of 46, and he rocks me every time. I think strategy is there. ^^

What rts DOES have strategy then?

here we go, the discussion between strategie and tactical gameplay.

starcraft is a RTS - but calling it stratigical is stretching it. it IS a tactical game, and you need to be able to respond and retaliate without wasting a second. that said, that is also the exact reason i dislike playing starcraft in tournaments.

i have been in the world top 200 back in starcrafts peak, but even then all i did was play a lot and learn the fastest and most effiecient responce to any attack and be able to do it asap on any map.

...in the end i gave up after not being able to advance further into the top 150-200 after 2 months.

then i learned of Total Anihilation, Spring and after that Supreme commander... god those games have strategie. i love it.

so starcraft is a good and balanced game ,but it's not the answer to all our RTS needs.

its not for people who can't keep up.

strategy is a plan of action to the means of reaching a goal.....(winning in this case)

sc= strategy?

Hey guys I have a problem, I went to install Starcraft tonight but it won't allow me to type the CD-Key. I have tried two different cd's and two different computers and I know for a fact the serial is valid.

I still play starcraft at least once a week.

Multiplayer is still booming after 10 years.

I should have used more detail. where it tells you to enter your name, i can do this fine but when i click in the serial number box it won't let me type anything. it also looks like it dosen't have enough space for all the characters.

I prefer a game that gives you a bit more time to think and react, of course the quicker you react the better but SC is just ridiculous for that and takes savage practice of maps which means the outcomes are somewhat predicable and boring.

Go away you shiny-eyed noob, we are trying to talk about gameplay mechanics.

The shit that really matters and on that note, I never was that big of a Starcraft fan, although I like the "RTS" genre. Starcraft and simular games aren't any more strategic than Rock, Paper, Siccors. Now the Civ series are much more strategic.
