View Full Version : Colt M1911
Who holds the patent to the design?
I know it is produced by many companies, so is the design licensed to them by the Colt company, or is the design in the public domain?

It's public now. Patents generally last no more than twenty years in the US. Hence the vast number of 1911 clones, and ARs, too.

Thank heavens. I was never a Colt fan
I'm still trying to decide what model of M1911 to get myself next month. I'm thinking Springfield Armory, as its been well within my budget everywhere I go.

Does anybody still make the original 1911, rather than the A1?

Springfield Armory 1911s suck. Ive never seen so much marring and tool marks on a supposed high end 1911.
If you cant afford a good 1911, then dont buy one at all.
Whats your budget? There are a couple options for well under a thousand.

$450 to $750, would go as high as $900 but that'd be an exceptional case.

Ok. For a new gun Id suggest the STI Spartan. Its built from a reworked Armscorp slide and frame. Its accurate and will feed hollowpoints, unlike most low budget 1911s.

I don't have a great deal of experience with pistols but I've used the STI Edge in .38 super and loved it, never had a problem in the 100 or so rounds i shot through it which isn't much of a test but the owner shoots interstate IPSC with it and seems quite fond of it.

Well maybe you can go buy one of Jeff Coopers personal guns or somethin.
Personally, Im saving up for a Nighthawk custom. Scary accurate, fit and finish is perfect and the customer service is great. They did some work on my Kimber and I was really pleased. Wilson Combot is really good too. Then you have Les Baer and Ed Brown too.
However, nobody really NEEDS that kind of gun. You can get a Les Baer for $1500 and its still an heirloom gun.

lol...
Les Bear ships their firearms in a cardboard box.
With of course -- only one magazine.
Cheap bastards.

True. Ive known a few people that opon recieving the gun completely overlook it and start bitching about how they are going to send it back because of the box.
The_Savage
2008-12-07, 23:08
The box wouldn't worry me, however places that only supply one mag with their rifles/pistols piss me off, You buy something with a detachable mag for faster reloads, And without a spare mag you may as well just keep reloading from the action.

Most of the serious 1911 guys toss the factory mags in a drawer and load up on Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick mags, anyhow.
What are the best options for an unaltered (no extra features or changes) 1911A1?

What is the best 1911 style pistol money can buy?
It all comes down to personal choice in my opinion my friend. But I think Kimber makes the best 1911's on the market. And anyone who doesn't agree - probably doesnt have the 2+g's to throw down on one because they're broke assholes.

Nice personality there. I'm assuming you've thrown down 2-3k on a nighthawk custom to compare then?

The best options for an innacurate, unreliable, uncomfortble to shoot 1911? There is Rock River Arms, Springfield Armory mil- spec, Armscorp and others can be found for around $350

2+gs? Where do you buy your guns from? I got my Desert Warrior for 1k and the SIS pro for $800.
Ive shot Wilson Combats, Nighthawks and Les Baers, and they were all more accurate them my Kimbers. Fit and finish was also perfect.
Since my Desert Warrior has already seen 20k rounds, it has become pretty loose. Nighthawk sent it back to me performing better than it did from the factory.

Obvious troll.
And, Springfield makes the best fighting 1911s on the market.
Sure, they can't shoot a .001" group at 553.8 meters.
But they can feed hollowpoints and they work when they're dirty.
I wouldn't go near a Kimber.
I mean, if someone has one and it works and they like it, good for them.
But if I had to pick a silly outdated pistol design, you could bet it would say "Springfield" on the side of it.
Also, the Kimber forum on 1911forum.com is the only one that has a sticky like this....

Just kidding! Despite the fact I've had positive experiences, I wouldn't go that far. By the way, I've been considering a .460 Rowland conversion for another 1911 for awhile....

Anyone know of any easy way to increase slide mass on a 1911? I know the Strike Plate Rail System or the AFB systems do what I'm looking for, but I can't use those with a compensator.
I kind of doubt what I'm looking for exists :-(. And no, I don't want to mount a scope or an eotech on there. That would mount to the frame anyway.

Haha, ok, maybe that wasn't the right thing to say.
But, I mean, a Springfield Milspec costs $500 and doesn't seem to have any of the issues Kimbers seem to have.
Also,
The FBI HRT uses Springfields.
And it looks like a run of the MEU-SOCs were built off Springfields.

Also, that article says that the Marines replace the worn out MEU-SOCs with Springfield Professionals.

Obviously you know nothing of the history of the M1911 otherwise you wouldn't be so quick to talk random bullshit. The M1911 was carried through both World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam - if it wasn't so "battle ready" as you put it, do you really think millions of G.I.'s would've been so quick to trust their lives with it?
Shut the fuck up.

I don't need to, but it would help a little more than a square slide catch.
Also, they don't make the kits for a longslide, so I'd have to custom order it, and I'm not going to do that. I've only been considering this kind of thing as a whim.

Do you think G.I.s had a choice in what weapons they "trusted their lives to"? Muskets were used during the American revolution and the Civil War, would you trust your life to one? You're quick to tell everyone who doesn't fall within the parameters of the grid and doesn't like shit weaponry that is regarded as creme de la creme, yet you only own two firearms and you only just recently established an interest in them this year.

I know law enforcement uses Springfield, but I wouldnt call them combat dudes.
The beat up Marine guns were replaced with Desert Warriors.
Notice that the warriors that buy their own guns, arent wearing a Springfield Armory on their hip.
GIs and or cops dont just trust their lives to something, its what they are given and what they have to use. I certainly dont want to carry a Colt m4 and Beretta m9, but I dont have much of a choice. You make due with what you have.
I see a lot of dudes running STI guns with squared bulky slides, they look like they would be a lot heavier. Dont hold me to that though!

And killing someone is not about"having the balls," it is about doing what must be done to defend ones self. you may have the balls to cold bloodedly kill someone but the life in ass rape prison will come with that, so enjoy! Then you will be wishing you didnt "have the balls."

It is important to realize that different people do better with different firearms. I love my Kimber, am accurate as hell with it, and have not had any problems to date. That being said, several of my friends can barely hit anything with it. With that in mind, it seems foolish to taut the merits of one maker over another if they both are putting out reasonably well made products. Just because a Kimber, Springfield, or 1911 as a category is wrong for you doesn't make it a bad gun.
