Highly considering getting one. Wondering what kind of accuracy to expect from it.

Surprisingly accurate. 2-3 MOA with good ammo. Lat I checked the barrels were not chrome lined, which in this case means more accuracy, but a slightly shorter life.

Those things are loud and have a big ass muzzle flash at night.

Good luck with current rifle prices.

You're always highly considering getting a gun, you aren't even old enough to buy a god damned gun son come back when you're 18 years old and actually have a steady source of income instead of living off your mom in bumfuck Nevada. 2006 is over son your mom don't have that kind of money anymore. You never buy anything you just come here and ask questions because you think everyone cares FUCK YOU.

I don't think the fact he's under 18 really matters, Hell I had 5 guns before I turned 17, you just get them in your parents name.

I got one as a gift once. It's a nice rifle, it's just that the compact nature really goes to waste unless you're clearing houses or something. I feel kind of like a fool taking it too the range because it's way more tacticool than I'll ever need, and it's quite loud. Since it's got a muzzle break the actual blast (as in, the gas coming out the end) is fairly uncomfortable. The recoil isn't bad though.

You'd probably be better off with the scout M1A, that is, a regular M1A with an 18" barrel. The ballistics are better and it uses the original M1A gas piston, instead of the SOCOM's special shortened design, which supposedly isn't as reliable.

Either way, it's gonna cost a fortune (but you get what you pay for) and .308 isn't al that cheap.

On the other hand, it's rather intimidating looking. >;D

I don't really know what the hell you're talking about, and I don't think you do either. I've had my own source of income and been buying my own shit since before I even had a drivers license.

I've got a list of guns I want to get, and Im not going to go around blowing cash on any without first doing my homework and weighing the options. The reason I post threads like this is because I know most of the people here know their shit.

I think you'd be a lot better served by a full size model. SOCOMs seem front heavy to me, and I don't consider the shorter barrel worth the sacrifice of velocity or sight radius (you're supposed to use the iron sights on those, it's really for the best).

Meh. The full sized ones feel really bulky to me. Solid feel to them, but damn heavy.

How much does the shorter barrel hurt your performance? Why are the iron sights better? Would there really be 5' of rail on the top of the receiver if an optic wasn't meant to be mounted?

How much does the shorter barrel hurt your performance? About 50 FPS/Inch of barrel.

Why are the iron sights better? Would there really be 5' of rail on the top of the receiver if an optic wasn't meant to be mounted? With a dot sight or scout scope, yeah. Above the receiver? You'd better get a pretty jumbo cheek weld or different stock.

I aksed my rifle coatch, a man who knows more about guns than any and every other man i've ever met, and he responded: "Why would you chop a limousine in half, add all kinds of silly shit on it and charge more for it than the perfect original?"

The main problem he had with it was that it was so front heavy you couldnt wield it accurately and would overswing like a motherfucker in a room sweeping situation.

Plus the shortened barrel greatly reduces accuracy and power. I was considering buying one but i completely trust his opinion and am now considering the full length M1A instead.

But, the .308 is too expensive in general for me right now. I'd be willing to buy it if ammo was cheaper.

Greatly reduced accuracyand power? Wrong.
Overswing in a room clearing situation. What? lol. Nobody wants to hear some boy scout dudes opinion on a battle rifle.

The weight up front reduces muzzle rise. And it wont make you any less accurate or fast unless you already suck.

And If you people hate the rails that much, then buy a Scout model. Problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is an illegal purchase. It must be a GIFT that you didnt know of. You cant give your parents the money to buy the gun they have to gift it to you.

The approx. 200 FPS loss in velocity probably won't make much noticeable difference at combat distances (in terms of muzzle energy), but downrange trajectory will be significantly worse. If you have optics with a BDC (like an ACOG, which is what I'd want on a rifle like that), it won't work as well.

So does the muzzle brake, but honestly, that has no place on a tactical rifle.

Well, the SOCOM 1 comes slick too. It seems like the SOCOM caught on a lot more than the scout ever did anyway.

I trust jodevilgod1's opinions as he has, as far as I am aware, had a decent military career and been deployed in front line combat. I reckon he knows what he is talking about.

Not do shit on you, your experience or training, but yeah I don't take much of what he writes with a grain of salt.

Also, in regards to a front heavy weapon and overswing, why not flex your forearm and shoulder on the no trigger arm and move the weapon rather than swinging it? It's pretty easy to adapt.

If I remember right, jdg posted a picture of one of these rifles from his personal collection, and he seemed to really like it. So apart from the science of ballistics and perceived ergonomics, this guy has one, uses it, and is more than happy with what he has.

Here's the M1A I cut my teeth with.

Sadly though, when the rightful owner came back from deployment, my babysitting time was over, and I had to relinquish custody.

Now I want one.

BUT

It'll have to be a Smith or LRB arms. With a JAE.

... which is spendy.
