View Full Version : Keep drinks cold

I like soft drinks (pop, soda) but only when they're ice cold.
Ice cubes suck unless you drink really quickly.
What's the best method to having the coldest without it being frozen solid?

Weird. I was coming in here to say this. Only works if it's winter, obviously. But I found it works a lot faster than waiting for a refrigerator to get it cold.

A tactic which works year round where you live. :)
OP, get a beer koozie or other styrofoam type thingy to keep your drink container in.

ive seen this kind of jug that is 2 layered. between the layers is a liquid. put the jug in the freezer so the liquid freezes, then keep the drink in it
you might be able to make your own
A regular insulated coffee mug would work, methinks. Moreso if you follow Mantikore's method of priming it in the freezer.

In fact, an insulated mug primed in the freezer and used for chilled cocktails (either as a drink vessel if you're not classy, or as a shaker for shots and the like) would probably be pretty damn handy.
At any rate, those mugs can be had at your local mega-mart for pretty cheap. Chuck it in the freezer the night before, have ice cold drinks all the next day, I would bet.

They're called Freezer Mugs. You can pick them up almost anywhere for a couple bucks; think Walmart or a Beer Store. You can also order them online; they come with a wide variety of logos and pictures on them.
They work very well and you can just order a couple. When one melts, you stick it back in the freezer and use a different one.

Soda needs ice. It needs to be slightly watered down. I don't like straight Coke, too goddamn thick and sharp. Hell, I guess I only drink it as a chaser anyway.

Fuck ice. About a year ago I made the decision to always ask for no ice at restaurants because they'd fill half the god damn glass with their fucking ice. It gets in the way.

It's sharp, I didn't say It was rough. I drink whiskey straight goddamnit. I just don't much care for the taste of coke. It's the overpowering sweetness that needs the acid in it to wash it away nearly instantaneously to make you not toss your shit up, and the thickness. However, so many years of drinking whiskey straight with no chaser has wrecked my throat, so I need a chaser anymore.
Coke is far more acidic than most soft drinks on the market, man. That's why I like it, personally. The sweetness is pretty relative.
I suppose if you're only drinking it for chaser, though, whatever's handy would work fine.

I used to drink the shit like a fiend. And let me tell you, I pretty much only drink water now(Although an occasion Squirt is primo!!!!!) and let me tell you that I noticed as a first dietary step that I lost a decent amount of weight from such a simple action.

those things work fucking awesome for sodas/beer. mine keeps my shit ice cold for hours. they have a low profile too, it's hardly much bigger than the can itself and plus it feels nice not having to clench onto a bone chilling drink

Heh, I like that. That store is like an English version of Urban Outfitters. Which means they sell a lot of stuff seen as cool and unique to young people, but their prices are also inflated a fuck load.
$50 for a "pizza plate?" Such bullshit.

Ever heard of a fucking fridge? Turn it up if you want it colder.

Do you drink your soda in the fridge?
Don't be stupid. I don't want to go into the intricacies of thermodynamics here, but if a drink is out of the fridge for any length, it'll warm up.

Exactly. Good thread here.
I find drinks warm up very quickly after 5 minutes it's notacable from sitting at room temp.

Coffee shouldn't be cold, at least not around me. I'm not into the whole iced coffee thing.
I think you've seen my rants about living at 7200 feet above sea level, and having to deal with constantly tepid coffee (water boils at significantly lower temperature here, so coffee cools down much faster). It shouldn't be "warm," per se, since I prefer it piping hot...
That's a whole different problem entirely, though. :D Someone start a collection for me to move to the tropics.

Meh. Too many old people. I don't think I could stand them if my only reason was having really hot coffee.
Besides, I like Wyoming. A lack of gun laws is nice.

Except if you bothered to read any of the thread, you'd see that the OP isn't interested in ice, regardless of it's shape.

There is a method that might help you if you want your drinks cold but without any ice in them, if you have anything in cans or bottles at room temperature, then put them in a mixing bowl/bucket with a bunch of ice, some water and a shitload of salt and stir it around for about 3-5 minutes they will all be freezing cold. Rinse off before drinking so you don't get any saltwater in your beverage. Actually works pretty good.

Kind of want to get that...
Someone already beat me to it, but-use salt. If anyone here has ever passed a highschool chemistry class, and this is &Totse so I'm assuming the answer is no, then you would know that salt lowers the temperature at which water freezes and melts.
So, grab a cooler, ice, water, and rock salt(or any salt, really) and watch this cheesy video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Cd-zwypio&feature=PlayList&p=3DDB3A49336ACFCA&playnext=1&index=48
