View Full Version : shower head
I want a new shower head.
Suggestions?
Things i should look for?
I saw some today with a bigger spray range but I'm concerned whether or not they are too heavy.

Get the kind with a hose attached, then open it up and remove the flow rate restriction washer to get more pressure.
If there's a special lady in your life, get a pulse massaging shower head. She'll thank you.

Yeah, those message streams feel really good on the tip of my twinkie.
But i've found this to the the most powerful so far:

Should i got for a German Designed Hansgrohe shower head with air injection technology thats suppose to make the water feel softer and more like rain or a eco-friendly water conserving one for half the price?

Do the water conserving ones decrease water pressure by a lot?

IMO, the "eco friendly" showerheads suck major balls. There is so little water flowing over you that you have to stay in the shower much longer to wash the suds off. If you want to be eco-friendly, just take faster showers with a normal head.
I've always wanted to make DIY showerhead like those really nice rain-style heads, so that the water wouldn't just be coming from one point, but straight down from a 3x3' area on the ceiling.
Yeah me too. Its a lot of work and $$ for a DIY. And one of shower heads were like 2.2 grand.
So as i suspected, the eco-friendly ones suck.
I want one with better body coverage. Does a bigger diameter on the shower head result in reduce pressure?

Since there is a limited amount of water coming through the pipe, if you make the head very large it will have hardly any pressure.

Thats awesome.
I would if my low pressure mains system could cope with the loss in pressure.
High pressure mains should be fine with it though.

You could..Make a reserve tank of some kind. Something that takes water in from a low pressure main, stores it up, and allows you to have higher-pressure. Sort of like a hot water heater, but for higher pressures.
I've always thought it would be awesome to have several different jets. Like, an armpit high faucet, a head high faucet, and a lower mounted stream sprayer for pressure washing out the asscrack.
And of course an industrial power air compressor to eliminate the need for towels.

That's another one of my ideas. How cool would it be if, above the showerhead, you had a giant hair-dryer-like device? Turn off the shower, turn on the hair drier for a few seconds, and you're totally dry!

I think about that scenario every time I climb out of the shower, dripping wet and pissed off.

The shower head we have is pretty damn old, but it's worth keeping.
There's an adjuster on the side, twist it one way to widen the spray dramatically, twist the other way to make it smaller, up to a solid stream of water.
don't buy an eco-friendly shower head. its the thing that defines your escape outlet when you get back from the gym, or come in from doing yard work, or are feeling dirty from getting intimate with a regrettable girl. when i'm having one of the filthiest days and all i want to do is get that film of whatever off, preserving the rain forest or saving 50 cents on my water bill for that day is the last fucking thing on my mind.
our apartment complex has pretty old shower heads, but they recently came around and "upgraded" the flow restrictors (tenants dont pay for water, atleast directly, so the management would probably suck dick to keep consumption down).
It was OK before and I didn't feel like it needed to be messed with to get a good shower. But after they changed em I swear some water fountains put out more actual liquid. It literally couldn't have put out more than 1 GPM, and it's an old head so no aspirator type device to give you pressure (I hate those anyway it feels like your downwind of a sandblaster w/no shirt). You had to manuever and duck down near the floor to get enough speed on the water to soak your hair.
So after about 12 hours of that we opened it up and their "eco-friendly water restrictor" was nothing more than a hard rubber bushing that's opening was maybe 1/8 the area of hte pipes. with that out now we can get 6 GPM easy if desired. its hardly even a shower by new standards... just a ~2 foot wide torrent of water constantly trying to knock you down. the drain system can't begin to keep up with it when its all the way on; a 5 minute shower on full blast fills the tub like 4 inches (yes we've ran h2so4 drain cleaner thru it). its not a problem because half-blast is more than a comfortable amount of flow, but if i just feel like loitering under a waterfall of 104 degree water then its nice to have the option.
Whats your opinion on the Hansgrohe air injection?
http://www.aquabrand.com/article/raindance-air-showers
article above
Luxurious feature or waste of money scam like monster cables?? The hansgrohe company has been around for over 100 years in germany and won bathroom awards or w.e its called.
they address the spaghetti/pins&needles effect that most shower heads have... i can't stand that feeling. and it looks like they might have a 5 gpm version, it says so in the reading but then in the model listing below it says 3.5 (14L) so i'm not sure.
if you find one to mess with in person or you buy it, report back on how you like it. sounds like a good system. i'd hope so for how pricey they are.
I went with the Hansgrohe Shower head.
It feels solid, although i havent tried it out yet.
I cant remove the old showerhead. It's stuck on. Is it possible the teflon tape expanded or something?
Any ideas on removing it?
I dont want to use excessive force and flood the house.

You shouldn't flood the house considering your in a shower with a waste beneath your feet.
And there should only be water pressure into the mixer and not the the shower head, so as long as your taking off the shower head only and not the mixer you should get no water unless you turn it on while your doing the job.
But thats just plain dumb.
Okay but i still dont want to fuck it up since it's x-mas and pretty hard to get a plumber over to fix it if i do fuck it up.
How else can i remove it?

I see your point, most tradesman are usually booked pretty solid before x-mas.
Just get a reasonable size cresent/adjustable spanner and spin that hex nut free.
Is it on a flexi hose or chrome copper pipe? If its a chrome copper pipe you may wanna support the pipe with a Stilson or pipe wrench and don't exert to much pressure on the pipe.....bad!
I dont think i have the appropriate tools. I havea chrome pipe, can i just hold on to that while i change it?

You shouldn't need to hold it, you'll feel if its gonna twist or bend the pipe.
Just don't put to much pressure on it.
You should be able to twist it off with both hands.
Unless it has a crox nut on the pipe end, then you'll need an adjustable spanner (cresent)
By the way it really shouldn't have thread tape sealing it, it should have hemp rope.
Any pipe with hot water going through it needs to be sealed with hemp, hot water fucks the thread tape eventually.
Unless you have no hemp, thread tapes perfect:rolleyes:
Good luck with it dude, old hemps a bitch of a seal to break. :(

You need a pair of wrenches: one for the pipe and one for the head. Turn them in opposite directions, and it will eliminate the torque on the pipe.
