I've NEVER gotten into the oblivion series. I'm just not an RPG person. but I bought Fallout 3 because, well, I have the time and I was going to make myself play an rpg.

I love it. It's fun. it's awesome. and it's huge.

I started out like any normal gamer would, playing nice. good karma, etc. but that is just too boring for me! is it worth it to play just a bad guy? killing people, lying, stealing, etc.? I'm sure I can play this thru again with different experiences, but still.

What do you guys prefer?

I normally play as an evil character when given the choice, but in Fallout 3, on my first playthrough at least, I couldn't bring myself to. It's probably because the things you can do in the game are truly despicable. I mean, blowing up an entire fucking town and killing everyone in it is some pretty heinous shit.

It's like, the inhabitants of the game are already in a terrible situation, it's just a really harsh world. Even though it's just a game it's kind of hard to bring yourself to the point where you're doing things to make life even worse for them.

Because of this, I ended up playing the game with the mentality that every choice that came up, I'd decide what to do based on my real life moral compass, making the decision I feel I would have made had I actually been in the situation. As much as an asshole I think I am, I don't have the heart to blow up entire cities or sell people into slavery.

Of course, I'll probably play it again and be an absolute bastard, but hey, that's just for replay value right :)?

Despite the fact that I`m an asshole irl, I always play as a good character in video games when given the choice. Probably the biggest reason for this is the difficulty. In most games, being goody two-shoes makes things a lot more difficult.

I must`ve played atleast 15 times through each KOTOR game and I always ended up going to the light side.

You should`ve made this thread about good/bad scenarios in RPGs instead of it just being about Fallout 3.

That's changed recently.

In Bioshock you end up getting more rewards for being a good character.

In Fallout 3, people literally run up to you and give you free shit for being such a nice dude.

I fucking KNEW you'd quote him! Haha

Yeah I was supprised when I was playing bioshock, on my first run I struggled because I decided harvesting might be my best bet. Then when I played it on Hard I tried to get the 'Little Sister Saviour' trophy and ended up having an easier time and having almost all of the good plasmids.

Edit: Is Fallout 3 worth getting? I've ran out of games to play and GT5 looks a long time off.

If you're looking for a medium length, open-world RPG oozing with atmosphere, absolutely.

That stupid black woman in Megaton is starting to piss me off. Every time I enter Megaton I get a cap or some other useless crap from her.

Being a dick generally gives better loot too, cause the good people in the game often carry nice stuff.

I actually had a hard time turning away from the kid whos father got killed by the Fireants. I know it isnt very far in the game, and not very important, but still. that was a deep emotional decision, but I still didn't want to face those fucking fireants.

Too bad i still have to.

No. For some reason I'm always a super nice guy in video games.

I blew up Megaton just for the sheer thrill of seeing a nuclear bomb go off. :D

When I went to the slaver town, Paradise Falls, everyone thought I was a legend. I was really bad. But, towards the end I got my Karma level up to "very good", so really you can always go back.

FYI once you discover Fawkes and if your Karma level is high enough, use him and go massacre everyone in paradise falls and free the slaves. :)

I try not to choose good or bad. I don't go around killing innocents or insulting everyone I come across, on the other hand I'd steal a bunch of hydroponic vegetables that could very well setback Rivet City a couple of years.

When given the choice I play based on my moral compass the first time through. Which makes me a fairly nutural character. For the most part I was a good character in the quests but, I usually end up stealin from everyone. I stole from the donation basket in the church in Rivet City.

What in the fucking stapler do you mean by retarded save system? You seem pretty narrow minded if you deem anything different as inferior.

I accidentally disarmed the bomb while fooling around with it, so I reloaded my savefile, went online to find out where to get the thing I needed to blow up the town, and then I did it.

It was a really awesome explosion. How can you say you enjoy being "evil" if you have such qualms with nuking a shitty little town?

This. Also, it's not a bad idea to do the minor quest involving Leo Stahl (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Stahl%27s_addiction). You get a pretty nice reward considering the 'quest' is basically just a speech check. I have yet to go to Megaton on my 'evil' save, so I dunno if you can just kill him and take his key, but I don't see why you shouldn't be able to..

Other than that, Megaton is mostly useless. I mean, you can make good money selling scrap metal to the guy at the processing plant, but odds are good that he'll end up disappearing/dying anyway at some point.

The great thing about fallout games was that you could do all kinds of crazy shit and still progress the game.

Try setting your intelligence to some ridiculously low number and going through the game as a retard. That's always fun.

I thought that it was yet another bug that was the reason my quest was still active. Kinda wasn't expecting to see her as a ghoul when I checked out Megaton.

I have a spiffy fedora, a flaming sword, and hand grenades made out of radioactive soft drinks.

How could I not love this? For every moment I think, "Bethesda didn't quite get this aspect," there are fifty that I go, "Fuck yeah, suck my laser." I sometimes think maybe I'm playing System Shock 2 when my sniper rifle breaks again, but then the game crashes and I remember it's a Bethesda product. *shrugs*

I'm playing my standard Fallout character right now. Sneaky crack-shot bastard who'll rescue your kitty while robbing you blind. Next one is gonna be an absolutely evil brute with a minigun and a Fat Man, I think.

I started my character out as good, but accidentally went on a rampage in Megaton, so I've given up on karma. My main stats are small guns and medicine. But I'm barely like level 8 or nine I think.

He didn't save his game. That's what happens when you only use the autosave feature. It's only a failsafe moron. Learn how to make separate save files. It's really not that hard.

It's an awsome game, I played through it as an evil char because I am badass and do not give a fuck about video game people.

I'm doing as evil of a path as possible (still taking it slow, doing everything I can).

Things I did

blew up Megaton
sell people into slavery
murder every good character
pickpocket bad characters
after trading with a random caravan, kill them.

and more. Steal everything I saw too, even if it meant just dropping it for the karma.

There are lots of people who shoot you for no reason, 3dog (radio guy) loves to insult you as well. My character is very rich (over 10,000 caps), have 2 followers (dogmeat and guy from ninth circle).

I love it as you can do anything and not worry about it.... I hear the most challenging path is to stay neutral.

I didn't play it very long, but I did some bad shit. I blew up Megaton, and I helped some scavenger kill two slavers (or Reapers, or whatever), then I saw all the stuff she had, so I killed her.

Lulz.

I just completed the game. Level 20; small guns, medicine, speech, sneak, repair, science were at 100, i think. Go to weapons were the Lincoln Repeater, which is awesome, and the Reservist's Rifle. Had a great time with it.

I'm gonna make a melee character maybe with Big Guns as well. Shiskebob = hellz yeah. Who else used melee?

My character had 100 in energy weapons, small guns, speech and lockpick and it worked out great.

I mainly used the plasma rifle my first run through.

I always play as a good character, but nothing will ever stop me from stealing absolutely everything from anyone.

On a side note, why the fuck can't i sell my shit for what it's worth even though my barter skill is 100, and i wear a rover outfit and button's wigg?

This game is a fucking joke.

I finally decided to -- for some god forsaken reason -- borrow it from a kid down the hall in my dorm and install it/crack it, and it's even worse than I previously expected. My roommate and I were trying to see who could beat the game first (which, in hindsight, was a terrible idea because the main quest is TERRIBLE) but we both just stopped playing after level 12 or so because the game sucks. The following bullet points properly illustrate why the game sucks:

-Terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible dialogue, I'm forced to skip it at every turn because it'll likely make me sick. The checks are some of the most self-evident things I've ever seen, [I]especially when your character is talking to the guy that runs the radio station. That was just sad. It went something like:

Guy: I'm fighting the good fight for mankind.

You: [intelligence] Ah, I see, so you're basically fighting the good fight?

Good god.

-The mainquest is the most nonsensical piece of garbage I've ever seen. Bethesda should have spent less money on famous people (like usual) to do voice acting and more time on hiring professional writers that can make a story coherent.

-The SPECIAL system is completely fucked now, especially since Intelligence is now by far the best stat in the entire game. Perception isn't all that useful in comparison to everything else, especially since it has nothing to do with the ability to aim at long distances. The bases for health and carry weight are too high, and make endurance and strength not as useful as they should be.

-It's waaaaaaaaaaaay too easy to max skills in this game, especially since intelligence is basically godlike now. Having them cap at 100 and having little bobble heads all around the game that add +10 to a skill is ridiculous.

-Most interiors don't even respawn

-Terrible gun variety -- when the game lists "examples" of the guns that you might find under a certain category, that's not just an example...That's every single gun for that specific skill.

-The game is criminally easy even on Very Hard

-The game is pretty damn gimmicky in general (Church of the Atom, the "vampires", etc)

-VATS is a form of godmode/has a lame slow-mo camera after each kill.

Admittedly, the game is pretty addictive at first, but all the sudden (just like Oblivion) you just realize how mindlessly vapid it is.

When playing games like this, you gotta put yourself in the shoes of the character. This game is set in a post apocalyptic world where it's kill or be killed. People try to fight the good fight, but they end up getting the shit tortured out of them and everyone they care about.

Think about what's in your best interest. Kill what you have to.
