View Full Version : How do poor people go to school?
Hey I was thinking of starting school at a community college this upcoming Feb. I have no money whatsoever, my parents don't have money, so I was thinking of getting a big loan to pay off after I'm done with school.
Can I get loans to pay for everything like rent ontop of the cheap tuition fee? If so, what company should I get a loan from.
Loans, lines of credit, and WORKING.

Loans, lines of credit, and WORKING.
And good luck being able to do any of those things in this economy.

Actually, when there's a recession, more people go back to school and do all of those things. As the saying goes, education is an investment.

Get a job. You should be able to get through community college without loans. But if you do need loans, yes, you can get them to pay for rent and etc.. Also, if your family is poor get some financial aid.

this should be a good place to start looking. perhaps if you still live in your home town you can go to your old high school adviser an see what they say. also the school you are looking at has a financial aid adviser or department, i would talk with them as they would know the most about their program.
personally i go to school on a state program called the promise scholarship.

If you and your parents are really poor, you won't even need a loan. Grants and such will cover it for your poor ass, and you'll never have to pay anything back. You have to fill out the FAFSA to apply for that shit. It'll tell you how much your family is expected to contribute to your costs based on their income. It could very well be practically $0. Then you get to go for free and piss people like me off.

I wouldn't even qualify for FAFSA to be honest. My dad made a fuckload of money last year but he quit his job and shit, it's really fucked up.
I'm heading to the Financial Aid office next week so I'll let you guys know what I ultimately do.

They can take into account such big changes, like losing a job.
If you're not exaggerating your situation, you shouldn't have to take out really any loans. My friend going to community college gets money back each semester because his grant amount exceeds the expenses. His parents don't make shit, obviously, but apparently neither do yours.

They don't. We have a class system for a reason.

Poor people can pay for school easier than students from a middle class background. Middle Class families don't recieve the same finacial aid as lower to lower-middle class families. At the same time, students that come from middle class families don't have the luxury of having their parents pay for school. I come from a middle class family and I'm pretty much stuck w/ gov't and non-gov't loans, with absolutely no finacial aid. My family can't afford to pay for my school. Luckily I go to school within my state so my tuition is somewhat more reasonable than if I went out of state. Middle class families have a lot rough in my opinion than lower class families do when it comes to paying for school. What happens if banks stop giving loans to middle class college students?

I saw an article the other day that said they were predicting a shortage of surgeons, one of the reasons being that many students were deterred from going to medical school because of the extremely high and rising costs. I felt like yelling in a crazy, angry voice "FUCK YEAH! FUCK YEAH. THATS WHAT YOU GET, YOU PIECES OF SHIT. FUCKING DROVE EVERYONE AWAY BECAUSE ITS TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE. ASSHOLES. NOW YOU'LL HAVE A GENERATION OF TRUCK DRIVERS TO FUCK AROUND WITH."
I don't know who that would be directed to, but it would certainly feel good to get it out of my system.

Yeah, I guess you're somewhat lucky in this situation, but the whole idea that the government believes that middle class families can afford to pay for their children's education is retarded. The government relies on the middle class to spend money, but at the same time they think that these families have enough savings to pay upwards of $30,000 dollars a year of college. I don't know, maybe under Obama tuition might be more affordable, but who knows?

I don't see any radical changes coming any time soon. This is the system we have set up, too many people profit from it to change.
What the government can do is increase the amount a student can borrow through the low interest Stafford loan program, which does not take financial need into account. They just bumped up the limit $2,000 last year, and cut interest rates I believe, which is good and all, but it still caps it at $7,500 for a junior or senior. I need more than $7,500 a year to pay for college. If the costs are not going to be cut, then they need to make more money available. Because the only other place to get money then is from a bank and the interest just buries you.
Individual states have the last say in setting tuition for their public schools. Here in Ohio they had enacted a tuition freeze for two years, but I hear that state budget problems will likely cause a nice big increase pretty soon. And that still doesn't stop universities from increasing the cost of housing and other general bullshit fees. Whatever they can come up with to fund them big athletic programs.
Textbook expenses have been known forever to be a crock of shit. Buy a book for $80, use it a semester, sell it back to the bookstore in like new condition, get $20. Then the store resells it for $85 next semester. Oh but if a new edition came out that is slightly different, you're fucked and they won't buy it back from you. Yeah that makes a lot of sense.
Remember how books were just provided for us in school? I would like to see how a system like that might work, where the university would incur the costs of the textbooks. I would also like to see an effort on the part of professors and lecturers to put reading material up online for free, and not requiring expensive new textbooks.

Loans, wonderful!!! Stupid ass kids who's parents just HAAAAAAAAAAAVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEE to have them in college get a bunch of student loans they can never pay for, and play one of the biggest parts in the current economic meltdown occurring to this day! The baby boomer generation is responsible for this mess, why do we allow their offspring, who think just like them, to get educations and run what used to be a powerhouse of a nation? Here's a suggestion, don't go to college, you're never going to be special anyway.

On the internet.... no seriously, they have internet colleges. I think theres even a couple fairly decent ones out there too that are recognized in the work place.
Of course, an in-the-classroom setting is more conducive to learning, because you can have the exact materials that everyone else using, plus real-time, hands-on experience with a group of people, with the teacher right there to show you what you did wrong.
My sister did high-school on the internet, because she brought a gun to school and got expelled from all the physical schools in the state for life.... so it is entirely possible to do this over the internet and never have to set foot in a classroom.

Not all of them... it really depends on what you want to do.
I heard good things about Art Institute of Pittsburg Online Division, as far as the Game Art and Design class... but then again, I don't see how that would work, games are usually a team project.

Part of the scam is that many professors make you purchase the books that they wrote for their classes so they can make money.

Ways to save money in college
-Dorms are actually really expensive and they usually stick it to you in the ass with the mealplan as well. Find like 4 or 5 people and rent a place designed for 2. It can be kind of fun although you will probably go crazy and do some ridiculous shit at some point as a result of the crowding. Also, since you're so poor the place was probably a shithole to begin with.
Try to get foodstamps. I think college kids can't get them in a lot of states but it's worth a try. The eating stuff is pretty common sense. Buy cheap items and make your own meals instead of relying on pre made items or especially eating out. Even going to McDonalds is out of the question. And if you eat a healthy balanced diet, which is easy to do cheaply, you will also need to eat less. It probably won't taste particularly good all the time though.
everything else is obvious. Don't do drugs, Don't go to the bars(gay), Don't go to movies, Don't have cable, Use the library, steal wireless.
You should also get a fucking job. And donate plasma. You can get like $60/week for that. Usually the university can even find you one on campus specifically designed around your schedule.
And quit acting like the government fucking owes you something. I bet you're a lazy pothead and you've never done shit for hard work. You should be grateful that they loan you that 7500 dollars every year assface. That should really cover tuition and books every year and then you can once again get a fucking job to put a roof over your head and food in your mouth
They don't. We have a class system for a reason.
Keeping the black man down?
And quit acting like the government fucking owes you something.
The government does owe us a living. We don't pay taxes (and the thousand incarnations of tax) for the fun of it. we pay them so essential services are provided, law and order is kept and the well-being of the population is looked after. they owe us, and if someone wants an education but is restricted by income, then the state should do everything in it's power to fairly assist them.
the government aren't our lord high leaders who always know whats best, they are essentially a business that is employed by the population. they owe us a fuck load more than what they are currently delivering, and there is nothing wrong with expecting them to live up to their side of the deal.

But I think government tends to do worse the bigger it gets and the more funds are poured into it, but that shall be reserved for the politics forum.

So you deserve far more than the rest of us that pay the same amount of taxes because you're too lazy to get a fucking job and put yourself through school? That makes tons of sense
Next time read the fucking post and don't just write your right wing spiel. There are a thousand clones saying the exact same thing on this board, why not think for your fucking self??
you will notice i said fairly. no one expects hand outs, something for nothing. the government owes everybody a living, that is everyone should have an equal opportunity to work and to be educated (as well as health care and universal rights). loans to students should have only nominal interest applied, and be available to all. the welfare gap is clearly at work here, and people are not getting the education they deserve due to a lack of wealth.
no one said anything about deserving. if someone needs more support (they are disabled, studying or the like) then they should get it. whats the fucking point of giving money to people who don't need it when some clearly do????
i have just graduated from my course with a mixture of working and loans. i pay taxes just like you do, so don't even fucking start with your 'my tax dollars' script.

I don't think all Right-wingers are against this sort of arrangement.
As a republican, I see absolutly nothing wrong with it as long as it stays on the state level. It'd be much more effiecient.
here in australia there are massive problems with state governments. we have a population near enough 21 million (i think the same as new york), spread out in eight states and territories. we elect both the state and federal governments separately.
this causes massive amounts of bureaucracy. if the state and federal governments are from different sides it tends to end up a pissing contest, not to mention the corruption that always appears with these arrangements. i would love if they just got rid of state governments completely, fired the lot of them, but that doesn't seem like its ever going to happen. 20 million people do not need three independent levels of government.
anyway, back on topic;
education is a complete no-brainer. everyone who is willing and able to get a meaningful education should have 100% of the state supporting them. educated people (on average) contribute more and more meaningfully to the economy, commit fewer crimes and are better citizens. of course, they are more difficult to mislead and lie to, and are usually the force behind demands for pesky things like rights, so governments like to keep student numbers down for self preservation reasons.

I went to state college in the 60s, when $1500/year covered everything--even drugs. My folks cashed in an insurance policy the first year, to supplement a small competitive scholarship I won.
The next year, I win a second scholarship (I was real good at taking standardized tests), and got two on-campus jobs, working a total of 30-40 hours a week in addition to pulling a full course load.
Go to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, or MIT :)

What he said. Schools like that usually advertise themselves as "100% need met" or something along those lines. At Harvard if your parents make less than $60,000 tuition is free (room+board may be as well, but I'm not sure). At MIT starting this past year they eliminated tuition and loans for students whose family make less than $75,000. If you can get into these places, it's a great deal.
Also, keep in mind that the FAFSA basically just tells colleges how much you're able to pay; colleges then decide if they care or not. The FAFSA qualifies you for certain government grants/loans, but that is generally not enough.
