what's everybody's favorite punk band?
The Clash tops that list somewhat well ahead of my second favorite, The Vandals.

The Dead Kennedys just rock.
Jello's obscene lyrics go great with East Bay Ray's surf-guitaring, which go great with Klaus Fluoride's great bass tones. They're just one of those bands that was destined to be great, and for good reason; . "I Am the Owl" personifies their skill.
But if you're looking for something new, try This Bike is a Pipe Bomb.

My top punk band is Jawbreaker. Great lyrics, heavily influenced by the old Dischord Record emo (late 80s). The lyrics are great. It has a lot of emotion behind it, and it's fairly intelligent stuff. Also, they have some great anti-punk scene songs.
Blake (the singer/songwriter) has started a new band with Cometbus and some chick called "Thorns of Life". Looking forward to it.
EDIT: Samiam, J Church, Isocracy, Sewer Trout for similar stuff (kinda)

Nirvana and Offspring.
I wouldn't call Nirvana much of a punk band.
I wouldn't call Nirvana much of a punk band.
The influence is obvious.
For the purpose of the thread;
Voodoo Glow Skulls.
Choking Victim.
The Dead Boys.
The Replacements.
The Damned.
The Misfits.

they didnt write about being anti-establishment like other punk bands, but in utero is a very punk album. it's basically a 'fuck you' to the record label, and to some of the fans. theyre not writing another smells like teen spirit.
isnt that what punk is all about?

Lately I've been getting back into Choking Victim like mad. Aus Rotten has always been one of my favorites as long as punk goes. If we're delving into the many sub-genres of punk Doom is my favorite of anything by far, but not so much what you guys would define as 'punk'. Discharge is another favorite. I've also been going back to the good ol' days and listening to a lot of Misfits since I saw then a few months ago.

And the other incarnations, I hope.
And the other incarnations, I hope.
Of course, Choking Victim's always been my favorite though when I'm into something more punk-esque, which I consider more upbeat and a less heavy tone then what I usually listen to. Leftover Crack has a more depressing dark political side these days, which is great when you're in the mood. But Choking Victim is better drinking music.
Never liked Citizen Fish or Morning Glory much. And haven't listened to enough Crack Rock Steady 7 or Star Fucking Hipsters to make an opinion yet. SFH is retardedly hard to locate anyways.

Citizen Fish is completely unrelated. The two bands tour with each other and have a split, but they're seperate.

i can't stand H.R's voice, they have a couple songs i like off of their first album, and like one of 2 aside from that. i suppose i do "fail at punk", but i don't listen to very much american hardcore anymore. but either way, from DC, minor threat was way better, and from new york, i'm a cro-mags fan. the reason i chose those to cities is because they're both where bad brains is "from." don't be a dick.

Ask anyone who was in that punk scene at the time. Bad Brains were THE band. But still...Everyones got their own opinions. HR's voice was genius if you ask me.

i understand that... i've seen american hardcore too... but when you say THE band, you also gotta think, well, black flag came first, and put out multiple records before bad brains and also recorded damage, which, from my understanding did the most for american hardcore, which i don't totally agree with, but that's what is said by "any one in the punk scene at the time." you also have to consider, bad brains plays concerts now for upwards of 50 dollars, that's not too punk, is it?

What Bad Brains are now can't even be compared to them in their youth. HR went fucking crazy with all that religious shit.
Watch him when they play live now. Least punk thing ever.

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (DRI), Millions of Death Cops (or any other meaning MDC could have), Adolescents, Agent Orange, Black Flag, CockSparrer, Cockney Rejects, Sham 69 (last 3 only if you're into streetpunk/oi! type of stuff), Crass, The Cramps, Demented Are Go, The Meteors, Elvis Hitler (last 4 are psychobilly type of stuff), Die Toten Hosen, Die Törtels, Dead Or Alive (DOA), Zeke, Turbonegro, Peter Pan Speedrock, The Queers, The buzzcocks, New York Dolls, Johnny Tunders and the Heartbreakers
Most of these are great. If you like something from this list and want similar stuff just ask, I'll probably be able to find something (I used to listen to nothing but punkrock so yeah).

nice poppunk list.
If you live in the Bay Area, Blake Schwarzenbach and Aaron Cometbus's new band, The Thorns of Life (name's unsure), are going to be at 924 Gilman on January 31.
In no particular order...
Dropkick Murphys.
Fatskins.
The Casualties (Saw them in CPH, loads o' Punks & other Skins, fucking loved it).
Brickwall United.
Last Laugh.
Flogging Molly
Stage Bottles.
The Oppressed.
Anti Heros.
Yup, mostly Oi!
There's a load more I listen to occasionally (Assmonkey mentioned a couple of the good 'ol ones), but these are the regulars.

The Clash
The Germs
Rancid
Stiff Little Fingers
Angelic Upstarts
The Casualties
NOFX

A lot of wack stuff listed here... Dead Kennedys are probably the most overrated punk band ever, and crust punk is horrible
How about some shit from when punk was actually cool/weird instead of just emo whining about society, boring Ramones clones, and shrill self-righteous anarcho-faggotry:
Desperate Bicycles -- #1 British punk band of the '70s
Hubble Bubble -- heroes from Belgium, 2nd LP is shit but the first one is pure gold and one of the best punk albums ever
The Kids -- another great Belgian band. "Do You Love the Nazis" is a classic
Negative Approach -- token early hardcore pick
Crime -- too rock to be respected as punk, far too shitty to be respected as rock, played San Quentin in cop uniforms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EnZi8C_VYE), primitive as fuck, zero musical talent but rocked anyway
Minutemen -- true Gs, greatest thing to ever come out of SST
Black Randy & the Metrosquad -- 3rd greatest punk album title ever: "Pass the Dust, I Think I'm Bowie." This band was led by an obese gay white man who was convinced he was black
Teengenerate -- beasts from the East. These crazy Japs actually knew how to rock, unlike 99% of punk bands from the '90s
Suburban Lawns -- Frank Zappa's favorite punk band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32-LHS2-LxU
Art Phag -- most primitive band ever. The singer from this band is an insane hick and built a rollercoaster in his backyard. They also invented grunge (along with the Scientists) but no one wants to acknowledge this
Theoretical Girls -- the only No Wave band worth listening to
Elvis Hitler (last 4 are psychobilly type of stuff)
Surprised to see them listed here. I don't know what you're talking about though because they put out 3 albums and they were all psychobilly.

Billy Bragg (I dunno if he qualifies)
He doesn't play punk music, but he's one at heart. I actually found out about him because Rancid covers his song "To Have and To Have Not". One of my favorite musicians.
