It picks up sound and plays back other frequencies so you can't hear the sound. Anybody know??

or rather plays the same frequency but completely out of phase (180 degrees) so it get cancelled out?
Its phase cancellation.. im sure wiki has a short crash course in this concept, as i don't feel like explaining it (plus wiki or other resources would have it written up better than me).
That's what your after if your asking how this is theoretically done.
