View Full Version : Finding trim pieces for a X-Type

I just got a '03 Jaguar X-Type. It has chrome exterior trim pieces, I want to change these to black? I can't find any online. Does anyone know of good sites for buying stuff like this online? Or would it be easier for me to take the trim pieces off and paint them myself?
The main reason I want to do this is because I want to put black wheels on the car. And with all the chrome trim I think black wheels would look bad.

Black wheels will look bad no matter what you do. I bet you're going to blackout the lights and indicators next too, and paint the car gloss black. Gross.

Get some silver steelies and dump the Jag on it's guts.

It's red. I plan on leaving it that way. But to each his own. I really like the look of the black lights and wheels. But if I can't find any black trim I'll probably just get chrome wheels.

What's wrong with an X-Type Sponsored?
I got it for 2k from my aunt. I can't really complain can I?

My dad had an X type. I worked on X types (among other jags) for a year. Enjoy the maintenance for a reskinned Ford Contour.

I thought it was on a Mondeo chasis or whatever.

And I really don't care what you guys think. It's my car not yours. I'm not doing anything to please you. Just wanted some help on finding parts.

True, and either way it'll be pretty nice to cruise in, but welcome to totse gearheads.

Thanks Cowboy. I've been here many times before. Just haven't posted in a little while. I'm not that mechanically inclines, I know some, but nothing compared to most of you. So most of these threads are over my head.

See, these are all my threads in Gearheads:

Well shit, for $2k, you can't lose, even if it's the shitty Jag it's still not bad.

Anyway you'll be best off painting the pieces yourself. If you could find black ones (which I doubt,) you'll end up paying an ass ton for them.

My dad had an x-type.

It spent at least 1 week in the shop a month.

When it wasn't broken it was... wait, what am I saying, it was always broken.

What kind of paint would you suggest using? A black spray paint, and then a gloss layer on top?

Paint doesn't take to chrome very well. Unless you can find some un-chromed replacements, you'll have to strip the chrome back. Don't be hasty, though, because that chrome will be expensive to replace.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I think I might just get chrome wheels to match all the trim. maybe some chrome with red caps or something. If they aren't too pricey.

Powdercoating, look into it.

Both.

Both.

So for the trim, I would take them off and have someone powder coat them? Would I have to sand them down first or would they do that?

Shop would take care of that, and I dont think there's much prep work in powercoating other than cleaning.

Know any places in the St. Pete area that do it good and cheap? Or maybe up in Tarpon, if I had to.

Tell them you're after a real smooth surface (surface depends on bake time) Powdercoat finishes are wonderous, and you won't be disappointed.

Alright. Does powder coat have a matte like finish? Or a gloss finish?

Can have either. We used to have all the suspension trusses/ties in 928s and 911s powdercoated when we rebuilt the engine back at the shop.

They're all based on the CDW27 platform.

Not bad cars really. Comfortable, reasonably quick, not too big or too small, probably slightly thirsty but it is a Jag after all, even if it is the baby of the range... Is it four wheel drive? The 4wd ones are very good...

You can get any finish in powder coat.

X-Types came from the factory with chrome flashings or body coloured flashings, if you can find one in a scrapyard you could pinch the black trim and black grill. The chrome around the windows came in black or chrome too. You could also go into a Jaguar dealer and ask, but don't expect them to be cheap.

That would be the look if the car were red. I would like to black out the lights as well as the trim and wheels. I don't really know how to do the headlights though. There is a Euro junk yard around near where I live so maybe I'll head up there and see if they have anything. They mostly had BMW and Merc stuff so I'm sure.

The Euro junkyard in St Pete? I was there a few weeks ago and they're pathetic.

If we're talking about the same one, Rcck's European or something. It's off 66th S right north of Brian Dairy. When I had the BMW they always had real cheap shit. Know of anything better in the area Sponsored?

Also, does anyone know how easy these trim pieces are to take off? Will I have trouble with the trim pieces and hood ornament?
