View Full Version : Organising an Outdoor Rave

Some of you might remember the thread I made about throwing a small sized rave somewhere indoors for this winter. And I still am, it will just be a more privatized one. (Like 50 people). But as for the larger event I was thinking... "hey, why not go all out?" So I was like hey... why not throw a real rave.

When winter is over and it's no longer muddy out I plan to organize a rave to be thrown somewhere in Western/West Central Massachusetts. It'll be an outdoor event and I'm almost 100% positive that I can nail a good open field for free, it is Western Mass after all...

Music: I'll be borrowing sound equipment from my friends and renting anything else speaker wise we need. For DJs I'm going to post up the event on forums like ravelinks and thenewrave order. I've I get any responses like other rave organizers I've talked to got, I'll pretty much have DJs flocking to me wanting to play for little to no money. Especially if it's out here in Northeast where the rave scene is almost dead.

Lighting: Renting professional equipment and also several/one beast generator.

Location: If you know anything about Western or West Central Massachusetts, you'd know the area is very unpopulated. I know a lot of people who own copious amounts of land in the middle of nowhere, I'm pretty sure finding a location won't be hard. Plan to get liability insurance as well so nothing legal... well of that nature... goes wrong.

Advertisement: Posting thousands of fliers around my half of the state, on craigslist, getting in contact with friends at college (I'm 17) to put up a print out of said flyer places, and on web forums. The information on the fliers/notices will provide prices/an e-mail address to send to and become apart of a mailing list and a number of a hotline placed on a prepaid cellphone. Come the midnight before the rave, we'll e-mail everyone where it is and put up a voice mail message on the phone explaining the same.

We plan to get the party started around 11-Midnight and have it go until sun rise.

With some effort and a few million phonecalls this should work right? For signing off on stuff my friend will do it. Is there anything I have not considered or things I should do differently? Comments? Would any of you come to this event? (If you're in the Northeast why not, come on, it's pretty much a totse rave)

EDIT: Oh yeah- to pay for this all we plan on charging $10 at the "door". We'll obviously fence off a huge area. For that I got mad fence connections.

what kind of music is it going to be?

i think psy-trance, dubstep or drum and bass are good for raves.

oh yeah, charging on the door? thats totally against the spirit of outdoor raves, the free parties i'v been to usually have a collection for charity, they make money by selling nitrous balloons and other drugs.

You should also tell the local authories about the rave.

Its only a suggestion though. You may get some troublemakers.

That sounds awesome I'm doin the same thing but on a small scale when the weather gets better, just close freinds 30 to 50 people, outdoor, sound set up with me and few others Dj'ing. But congradulations on organizing something like this, theres not enough people doin thins like this anymore, if I lived close I'd go, I'm In Vancouver, Canada.

There's forest parties, beach parties, warehouse raves, etc, here in England at least once a week, and that's just around where I live.

I'm sure it's alot more popular over there, electronic and dance music used to be alot bigger here, now it's mostley hip-hop top 40 parties all over the place. Even this past weekend I went to a house party, was supposed to be electronic music, which is a big reason I went, I was very wrong, just hip-hop and a few old-ass played out wanna-be trance remixes.

I would charge less at the door, like 5 bucks just because it has the potential to bring more people in. 10 bucks seems like it deter some people from showing up.

For example, if people have never heard of the DJ's at it and its way off in the middle of now where far from major cities people might not be willing to drive out there to pay for DJ's they've never heard of.

Anyway, keep planning it and getting suggestions about how to really get people to show up in numbers.

I think it has the potential to work, just got to do some more planning. :)

I'm sorry to hear that.
I think rave is still an elitist sort of thing, people think it's very mainstream because the music (well, watered down versions) gets played in clubs. But proper raves are still very underground. It's just a matter of finding the right people.
Ask around in non-commercial music shops, the kind that sell local band demos, and especially those that sell rave vinyl.
Most raves over here arn't known about until the week before hand and if anyone is interested they put their mobile number on a list, late afternoon on the night of the rave the organiser sends out text messages to the people on the list. That way he can judge how many people will turn up and if it's worth putting on, which it usual is :D

Word up. I'm in very western mass, I'd go if you actually pull it off. There is a lot of woods around to choose from..... maybe somewhere off route 9?

Anywho, how can I contact you so I's can be on the list?

Play psy, we get loads of outdoor doofs held around here in Aust, talk to the kids over at OzTrance if you want an idea/help on the basics of organising a decent rave, we get international psytrance dj's out here quite often for them so the kids know what they are doing.

Also, i suggest psy trance at your doof, with mebe a 2nd stage with some chill/dubstep/breaks. But psytrance gets you the best kind of crowd :D

I still haven't figured out what the event will be called so I haven't made an e-mail account for it yet. But you can send me your e-mail at rodriguez-162@hotmail.com and once I make the rave based e-mail, I'll add you to the contacts.

Start off small & move up.

50 people & you can use car sub woofer setups with 12V car amps (4 speakers).
Just keep adding to it.
Like, 3 double subs & 4 speaker surround sound (times 3)

& chuck in a 240 V AC 700watt Generator & throw in a home stereo or large outdoor speakers & amps.

Lights, Strobes & a Laser show made from laser pointers & mirrors (there kits for this & you can buy the whole setup for cheap somewhere.)
Bubble machines & smoke machines too.

You can get 12 V spotlights in many colours & the cheap 'police lights' as well.

At about this point you need to sort out shit houses, dig a big hole & throw in some lime & cover it in before leaving.
Get a small drum & cut out the bottom end & a smaller hole in the other end & screw a dunny seat to it. Use metal pegs to hold it in place.
Use a shitty old tent as a room for this.

For the guys a urinal is better as its quick & leaves the dunnys to the Girls.
I saw a setup where they got a long tarp & wired it to a fence in a 'U' shape but 30 feet long, one end lower so the piss runs into a hole or something.

Its something I want to do when we get around to it, people are overseas now. Theres a tunnel a way from here that could be used, we have been there to check it out. Theres other facilitys around one end of it, car parking, water, shit house etc.

Yeah, go for it.
