Saturn Ion dash. Yea, it's different, but having no gauges is equally as different...

It does make it a lot easier/faster/cheaper to switch from LHD to RHD. About 40% cheaper, IINM.
Of course, since the Ion wasn't sold in RHD markets, that's a pretty moot point.
Mine:

The steering wheel blocks the speedo dial (which is interesting driving through town with speed cameras around), none of the switches light up at night, and it comes loose every now and again.

God, I hate cars with the the instruments in the middle.
It's a lot more distracting having to look to your left (or right) to see your speed and whatnot than a simple glance downwards.
frinkmakesyouthink
2008-12-08, 13:41
^ yeah I also hate that.
http://www.whatcar.com/Car/Toyota/Yaris/17266341540.jpg
That's the Yaris, you have to look down that stupid tunnel to see the poorly illuminated digital crap that's only visible from a certain angle.
The Morris Minor, Mini and MINI all have the stupid centre dash thing going on too.
What I really don't like in modern economy cars is the complete lack of instruments. Not having a rev counter is annoying, but I've been in new cars that don't even have a bloody temperature gauge... all you get is a speedo, fuel gauge and a 'dead engine light'.

Got that right. I've had to live with speedo/fuel/temp gauges for a year and a half, and only just recently got a full dash with speedo/tacho/oil pres/volts/fuel/temp. So much better.
MasterYoda210
2008-12-08, 14:00
Hells yeah. I used to have a photo of my dads Integrale's dashboard, but I think my old photobucket account got hacked, but that had an obscene amount of instrumentation.
I think there was speed, revs, boost pressure, volts, fuel, engine temperature, fuel temperature, oil pressure, oil temperature, and 2 other on the centre console I forget now.
frinkmakesyouthink
2008-12-08, 15:30
^ that's how it should be. The more dials the better.
I want to wire up a switch that turns off all the dashboard lights except the speedo and the rev counter. It'd make driving at night much less distracting (although my car does have the little dial to make the instruments brighter or dimmer, it's still not very useful). Saab already do this.

Those switches on the AC? They are about one inch wide and three long. Why? It's a MANLY car dripping with MANLINESS and BIG BEEFY SWITCHES for MANLY MEN. What a fucking gay car. Oh, and the switches move easier than the ones in my car.
I thought that the Citroen C4 did quite a good attempt at a centre speedo:

Yup. Though personally, I'd have gone for a 'bar'-style digital speedo (like the tach). You don't actually need to know the exact speed you're going down to the last km/h.

Tell you who had some gorgeous interiors. Old citreons. You know the 80s ones, and the drives seat is like an armchair. Someone will know some of the good ones better than me, I can't think of any examples. Great steering wheels too.
1988 Buick Lesabre, any northstar caddy and my 98 ford ranger interiors are lovely. also the K5 blazers and old silverados. pretty much any 1980-1998 domestic dash looks nice IMO.

i was in a mack truck last nite, and it had many gauges, both diff oil temps, engine oil temp, tranny oil temp, water temp, volts, air pressure, tacho, speed, engine oil pressure and a few others that i didnt take much notice of, but then again, trucks need that kind of instrumentation when they are carting fly ash 18 hours a day

gentlemen, gentlemen. clearly the mid to late 80's model lincoln town cars offer a superior dash board experience that caters to those who know luxury and style:

Citroen SM:

Probably the only French car I like/would own.
Or that other one I can't remember, but it had a pretty weird design flaw.
The speedo was simply a drum that rotated round as speed increased, but obviously a drum only has limited space, so once the car gets over about 90mph I think, all that is displayed is a skull and crossbones.
I'll see if I can find which Citroen it is.
Om nom nom. What about a 2CV? DS? 205 GTi?
MasterYoda210
2008-12-12, 12:32
You mean as a car to own or as a dash design?
Because frankly, I'd rather shit myself.
To own. You wouldn't own a 205 GTI?
Cowboy of the Apocalypse
2008-12-12, 15:38
Fuck your 205 GTIs. Citroen makes ball grease.
I watched Death at a Funeral today and it raises an important question; who is that guy who is in fucking everything? And I wonder why he seems to be in the cast of everything that's not a recycled cast from Spaced or Black Books (actually, I think he might have been in that boring as shit Tristram Shandy movie too).
Anyone who would curse a 205 gti is not a real man.

Anyone who would curse a 205 GTi has either not driven one, or has been beaten by one despite having a far more expensive and powerful car.

here's my contribution. those vents look jacked from an 80's blazer, funkiest steering wheel i've seen, puts citroens to shame, and so boxy i'd be afraid to cut myself on the dash. and its still ugly on the outside.

the lagonda? 645 made from 76 to 89. going for £150k.. yeah i would say so. but it was catering to a niche market, where the edsel was trying to be more mainstream.
frinkmakesyouthink
2008-12-12, 22:12
Yeah and the Edsel lost the company like $350 million, whereas the Lagonda saved Aston Martin despite being a complete piece of shit
red_eyed_wonda

Was a success. The car is basically a huge penis. It's even got a ball-sack. They should have given it a V8 so big that the whole car throbbed and painted it purple. And given it a vinyl roof for pubes.

Yeah my computer won't handle running bittorrent and firefox at the same time.
It's really fucking buggy. It's only an AMD2500 (overclocked by about 15%), 1 gig ram, 256mb graphics card, 200 gig hard drive. I built it five years ago and it's starting to slow down a bit, probably (definitely) all the shit on my hard drive. I need to wipe it but I lost my copy of windows XP and my dvd burner never worked... I might get an external hard drive to copy all the important stuff over.
It was an absolute beast in its day. The only thing I've done is put it in a different case with better cooling and put a new hard drive in it (the PC overheated massively when I was out of the room, but somehow the only damage was to the hard drive) and it runs Command and Conquer 3 pretty fucking well for such an old machine.
I'll replace it one day. I don't know anything about building computers any more though.

Bleh probably. I'll beat anyone at original Command and Conquer though... from the age of eight to thirteen I played that game almost literally every day. Then I discovered "sitting in the park with other thirteen-year-olds, talking about blowjobs and occasionally sipping stolen beer and 'smoking' weed, trying desperately not to get an inappropriate hard-on when a girl sits on my lap". Not as fun, if you ask me.

Then I discovered "sitting in the park with other thirteen-year-olds, talking about blowjobs and occasionally sipping stolen beer and 'smoking' weed, trying desperately not to get an inappropriate hard-on when a girl sits on my lap".
Those were the days man.
Anyway, a 205 GTi. Only times I've raced one were recently in my coupe. Twas tight I admit, but my superior driving and longer gears saved me. Then one time in my dads Integrale. If, straight after beasting a Ferrari 355, we'd have been beaten by a 205 GTi, I think I'd have killed myself there and then.
I've driven one too. Horrible contraption. Typical awful French clutch, gearbox like wiggling a broomstick in a bag of marbles, driving postion like a gorilla, no proper feel to the steering - it gives no inclination of when it was reaching its limits. When it does reach its limits, it understeers like a motherfucker, due to the fact it props itself up onto three wheels, and because of the short wheelbase it was averse to some left-foot-braking drifting to correct the understeer. All in all, a relatively small, cramped, modestly but not amazingly high powered piece of French 80's shit, and the most distinctly underwhelming experience of driving a "sports" car ever. Even worse than a Golf GTi, in a completely non-trolling way, as these cars are regarded as "legendary" by some people.
It may be a good car to some people, but them cars really don't suit my driving style. I like high-revving, long geared, long cars capable of four-wheel drifting, that actually give feedback through the steering and are actually nice to sit in, with progressive and constant power delivery.
