I was playing Battlefield 2. Then the game locks up, and I get a BSOD. I didn't look at the exact contents of it, which was probably a mistake. It has been doing this a lot lately.

Now, booting up, I have no video on that OS. I've tried the onboard VGA output as well as my video card, a 7600GT.

I've been able to boot up on Puppy Linux and Knoppix just fine, so the problem is probably in the OS(XP SP2). I can't get graphics in VGA mode, Safe Mode, or anything like that. Though, the computer is booting up. I can go onto another PC on my network and check the router, and my PC shows on the client list.

I have no idea where to start with this one. Is there some sort of error log I can access through Knoppix that will give me some hints on what to do?

That doesn't help me.

When I boot up, the screen is totally black.

Your memory may be the cause for this. Pull and replace with a stick that is good. Be sure to test all slots one at a time if the initial boot test does not do it.

I tested my RAM with one of the utilities on Hirens Boot Disk. It didn't show any problems. I'll try what you said next.

You should try to boot with the XP CD in your CD- Rom and hopefully you can get to the repair console and run chkdsk/r.

Or you can enter setup and do an

XP Repair install

Please read carefully and make sure you followed the warning links before initiating the Repair Install. You can print a text version for reference. repair.txt

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.
2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER. do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".
4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!
6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

If you get files not found during the copying stage.

Blaster worm warning: Do not immediately activate over the internet when asked, enable the XP firewall before connecting to the internet. You can activate after the firewall is enabled. 7. Reapply updates or service packs applied since initial Windows XP installation. Please note that a Repair Install using an Original pre service pack 1 or 2 XP CD used as the install media will remove SP1/SP2 respectively and service packs plus updates issued after the service packs will need to be reapplied.

Service Pack 2

An option I highly recommend; is creating a Slipstreamed XP CD with SP1, SP2, etc. .

Your first problem was ignoring the blue screen. If it happen more than once there is obviously a problem.

Your first problem was ignoring the blue screen. If it happen more than once there is obviously a problem.

It was the vid card. I was never able to find any good drivers for it.

I got the onboard chipset to work, and ordered up a new 8600 GT to replace the 7600. Newegg has a deal going. $40 for the 8600 after rebate.

The 7600 was a piece of shit in many ways. To ebay it goes.

Thanks for your help, guys.
