Why is he remembered as a hero? Why is he remembered as an equalizer? Why do we not remember the truth, but simply what we would like our children to believe, fantasy? Who has infiltrated our education systems? We are not teaching truth.
Discuss.

Well duh! Everyone knows that Lincoln was a racist along with the majority of the population. I mean shoot, even carpet baggers and scalawags were bad. Most of them jumped on the race equality wagon to gain a foothold in power and wealth, not to free black people. We don't like his views but rather his actions. He proposed the emancipation proclamation not because he liked black people but rather because he wanted to make a huge blow to the south. It was just a war strategy but regardless of his true intentions the result was that black people did gain a slight amount of freedom which set up the beginnings of a trail which would lead to the full rights of black people.
This is why we don't have a day in his honor because he didn't do much for black people but he did enough to where people will recognize him as being an effective president. Remember, he may have been a racists but he successfully won the Civil War and reunited the states to a relative degree using moderate techniques in his reconstruction policies. Plus he did pave the way for the ratification of the 13th amendment. The reconstruction was an utter failure but he managed to hold the Country together long enough to recover, which in my opinion is very effective. I mean consider how many civil wars in other countries resulted in a completely new government or a complete state failure?
I agree he is a very overrated president, indeed, but that doesn't mean he was a bad president and it certainly doesn't mean we should ignore the things he has done. If you're going to claim him as being a bad president due to his views on race then perhaps you should reconsider your opinions on all of the other presidents, and for that matter all of the people who we would consider today as being heros. Those were different times buddy and I promise you 100 years from now, our current heros will be criticized just the same.

not much new in that link. if any one has read a book about the man they should already know most of this

he is remembered as a hero because he was president during the civil war an he was assassinated. he is remembered as a equalizer because of the emancipation proclamation, even if it did have ulterior motives. we remember him the way we do because it aids in the smooth functioning of our society. no one infiltrated the education system, it has, an always will be used as a socializing force. hence they will teach us what they think will aid in the smooth functioning of society. it is up to us as humans to seek our own interpretations of events. truth is a subjective term, history is open to interpretations based on the discovery of new facts an the constant mix of changing societal values an norms.

well said. Text books in high school and middle school tend to discuss the facts rather than the opinions. We use those facts to formulate our own opinions. For instance, in my high school text book they went over the facts about what Lincoln did such as the establishment of the emancipation proclamation and they clearly explained that it outlawed slavery. They never discuss how Lincoln is or isn't a racists. Now most kids who learn this will formulate their own opinions and because they do not have further knowledge about the loop holes Southern officials came up with, they simply assumed all problems were fixed and everyone lived happily ever after all thanks to Lincoln. We fail to explain the nitty gritty details of everything in elementary education because essentially the purpose of teaching History at that level isn't to mold them into excellent Historians but rather to teach them the basic concept of what history is and what exactly happened. If we sat here and went to great lengths to discuss the flaws of the president and and the loopholes and all that stuff, they would become confused and wouldn't know what to think and ultimately they would end up missing the whole point which is Lincoln abolished slavery with the emancipation proclamation. This is why we have a higher educational system and it is places like college where students will learn the different interpretations of history so they can have their own opinion. This is also why we have free knowledge in America so if one wanted to explore the subject further they can do it themselves as long as they are competent enough. We learn one side of history initially for the purpose of simplicity and we go to college to learn the facts and the different opinions associated with them so we can have our own opinions.
