View Full Version : 16 y.o. wants a motorcycle

I'm 16 and getting my class D license soon. But ever since I was little I've always wanted a motorcycle. Problem is my parents won't let me go for my permit because they think its too dangerous. My uncle rides, but nobody that lives close to me does and I'd have to teach myself or take a course.
Right now I want to take an MREP course and then hopefully buy a motorcycle. But it sucks because they won't let me.

What was your question?

Look mate. Wait two years.
There are SO many reasons not to let a 16 year old get a motorcycle that I'm not even going to start
16 y.o. wants a deathwish.
Wait till you're 21. A new driver should be in a car, not on a bike.
Mistake in a car = mashed up car
Mistake on bike = mashed up body

yeah you guys are all right I don't know why I even made this. I'm just bumming because I think if they gave me the chance I would be responsible with it - I don't want to die or get fucked up. I just want to get into the whole thing while I'm as young as I can, 21 just seems so old for me.
Like the kids who grew up dirt biking and around motors its in their blood, I don't want to be learning this when I've got other shit to deal with.
This thread should probably just be deleted, sorry.

S'alright mate. It's nice to see that a totsean is showing some thought.
Wait till you're 21. A new driver should be in a car, not on a bike.
Why? I would rather have the new driver take his own life than the lives of others.
Don't listen to that fool op, get the bike when you're 18 (you won't need parents permission). Maybe get a dirtbike now to learn how to ride, but that's not necessary.
I am only 18 and I'll tell you that motorcycles are way more fun to ride than driving boring ol' cars. Be observant of your surroundings, don't be cocky, wear safety gear ALWAYS and you'll be fine. What's the difference between a ferrari and a motorcycle? The motorcycle is cheaper, faster, and gets more girls.

Every body should spend six months riding a motorcycle before they start driving.
drivers would be alot more careful and considerate if that was the case.

Don't be silly. A ferrari will pull wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more girls then a motorcycle.

How about we actually test people on driving ability and skill rather than WHAT DOES STOP SIGN MEAN???!!!11

just wait until youre older and more responsible. Dont give us the bullshit excuse that youre responsible and safe. everyone knows how stupid a 16 year old kid is no matter what he says. I had a friend in your same situation. He wanted a motorcycle and finally got one when he was able to buy one. He didnt see his 20th bday. it took him less than a month to get strung across the freeway.

Not everyone in the world is your friend.
Get a bike if you want one. Motorcycle does not necessarily equal death and well, at least if you die riding you die with a smile on your face.

This.
Same position actually, 18 and i've got a SV650S.
I think riding bikes for a year before driving on the road also has made me a much better driver compared to my mates with the same amount of car driving experiance.
Hardwires observation and fast reactions into you.

Yeah this is my plan, and the dirt bike idea has been shot down so many times. About bad judgment hell I'm 16 of course I'll make stupid choices, I have a lot of respect for safety though (always wear my helmet when I mountain bike, etc.) and everyone I know who owns a motorcycle has crashed it (and lived).
Right now is the time for me to save up for it guess. How much can expect to spend on everything to becoming a new rider, including courses, permit tests, license tests, and fees?

All the ones who died are dead, and hence you haven't met them because you're only 16.
I'm nitpicking here though. Get a bike, great fun.
It's like listening to old people who smoke and they say (in a stupid old voice) 'Oooooh! I've been smoking for fifty years and it ain't done me any harm!'
Yep, the reason there isn't anyone giving evidence to the contrary IS BECAUSE THEY ARE DEAD.

No. It is still the fault of those god-forsaken, suicidal arseholes on motorcycles with no regard for their own personal safety or the lives of anyone around them, let alone their poor, suffering, families.
Anyway, the people in the cars do not die. The car protects them. You can not die whilst in a car, even if you decide to inject cyanide directly into your penis while travelling at twice the speed limit on the wrong side of the road. Fact.

Yeah I was just fucking around too. Any time you get into a vehicle you are taking a risk, so I figure that I might as well just pilot the vehicle the gives me the biggest smile. I'd rather die on an R1 than in a VW.
One of my cousins died riding off-road actually. It's not really any safer.

Listen, many of those motocross riders end up with broken bones or backs. You getting a motorcycle really isn't that great of an idea. Though, if you must, check out some Honda CT 70s. They're minibikes. They look sorta like a motorcycle, mine goes up to 45 mph, you can pop wheelies, ride on trails, and so on. I imagine they'd be a good starter for someone who wishes to purchase a motorcycle in the future.
Look around Ebay. They have completely rebuilt ones for up to $2000, or mediocre condition ones that range from $100-$1000.
Edit- You may be able to get a moped license for these. Also I recommend the 1970 Honda CT 70s. They look the most bad ass with their huge shiny exhaust pipe.

So do many football players and people trying to have showers.
Yea I agree with all the previous posters. My friend got a Ducati as his first bike when he was 18. I don't know much about bikes so I can't give you the specifics but I do know his dad paid $14,000 for it (He also has a cl550 and a range rover sport that spoiled motherfucker). Anyway the outcome was very very bad.

The only way you should get a bike when you turn 16 or any age is if you've had experience on dirt bikes you will get fucked up if you don't do that.

yah i guess that is right.
i just got a bike, two weeks ago and I just got out of hospital with a broken ankle and lacerations on my arms face, chest, thighs, legs, and shins (even my goddamn palms).
i shortshifted from 5 into 1st going 60kms an hour and slammed into a store window.
nuff said, ill have crutches for two months and a 2k$ debt to hospital let alone the $1.5k bike.

How did you shift from 5th to 1st? Aren't all bike's sequential so you don't have to take your hands off the handlebars?

When would you ever shift from 5th to 1st? Thats right, you never would.
You click the shifter down with your foot 4 times if it's standard pattern.

I asked because he said that he crashed shifting from 5th to 1st. I don't think anyone would be dumb enough to do that on purpose, but I could be wrong.
I think some old harleys had a car-like shifter.
But what he probably did was just pull in his clutch then push his foot down 4 times for some reason. I don't know exactly what he means by shortshifting, though.

Nothing wrong with a 16 year old getting a bike. Not the best idea for them to ride on the road at that age if they haven't got plenty of experience yet, only becuase they're too busy worrying about riding the bike to pay attention to some dickhead in a Falcon coming off a sidestreet too fast.
If you ask me, and by making this thread you're kinda asking me and everyone else here, 16 is too OLD to be just learning to ride. Should have learned to ride waayy before then.
Definitely agree with sentiments that everybody should spend a year on a bike, in theory, but in reality that's not all that great of an idea.

You can shift from 5th to 1st (or from one gear to any other, just as easily as you shift from 5th to 4th), only you you need to be either on the brakes or going slow enough that you're not going to rip your bike apart. Just click the selector lever down (if it is actually down on your bike) 5 times* when you're holding the clutch in, and that is exactly what you will have done. You never actually shift into the 4, 3, or 2 speeds because you haven't engaged them - your clutch lever was depressed the whole time. There are plenty of times where you would employ this technique, especially if you ride dirt.
*5 times if it's standard pattern (5432N1) buddy, not 4.

Riding a motorcycle is always dangerous on the road no matter how fucking skilled you are, there's always unforeseen consequences coming up in the road. Just make your peace with death before you say its cool to ride streetbikes. ive come close to death in a canyon while riding, i took a corner way faster then i normally would and i froze mid corner and tried to brake out of it, slid the bike into the 2 foot fence and the bike threw me over the handlebars and i landed upside down in a bush. it was either the cliff, lightpole, bush, cliff. and i was lucky enough to hit the bush. you wont always be that lucky. ride safe. wear your fucking helmet and jacket, get a good set of gloves with a hard material on the knuckles and fingers.

You must like rear wheel chatter a hell of a lot more than I do. You should never have to go from 6th to 1st. Yeah, most bikes now have a 6 speed gearbox.
1N2345 isnt always the shift pattern either. A roadrace bike is generally set up with 1st up, 2-6 down, because you can't hook your foot under the lever to shift up when you are leant right the fuck over.
