If you're in a pinch to turn in that 6 page paper and you're on page 5 without any more ideas, make your periods bigger
1-Type your report, paper, whatever up in your normal required font.
2-Hit "control+F" or find "Find"
3-Type in a [period]"." in the "find what" box.
4a-Type in a [period]"." in the "replace with" box.
4b-With the cursor wtill blinking in the "replace with" box, hit "More>>>" if not already extended. Click "Format>Font".
4c-Choose the sixe you want to change the periods to, you may need to go back and alter it to be as you think appropriate.
5-View report.

Or copy/paste and change some words here and there and be done in 15 minutes.
You can also leave two spaces after every period. It's a standard convention and completely acceptable.
Exactly, don't be a lazy fuck and try to scam your way through a paper, you are going to school for a reason, to learn something, might as well do a good job.l

This... but then again Gen Eds are a pain in the ass.
Or you could just up the font size a bit on the whole thing...if you think your teacher will notice you can always try a half size. I used to use 12.5 all the time when it was supposed to be 12. Adds a bit of length but not too noticeable.
Gen Eds are a pain in the ass.
This. I'm doing a fucking powerpoint for my "psychology of the simpsons" class.... Biggest waste of time. Unfortunately I didn't take it seriously enough and now i'm stuck struggling for a damn D. Even though I pass in A and B work.... Fucking Gen Eds.....

Yeah I never understood that. And we were never really taught that in school, even senior year of high school when we were introduced to how to write research papers. I think I remember just realizing it while reading some book, that there were two spaces there.
But Microsoft Word will underline that as a grammar mistake.

Another trick, is to use the format menu to widen the space between letters, and the spaces between words. Doing half-sizes make this nearly unnoticeable, yet effective.

No it won't. You're supposed to have two spaces after the end of a sentence.

Yeah they taught me the 2 spaces after a period thing in 5th grade. Been doing it ever since, and Word has never had any problems for me..
This period trick is awesome. It added nearly half a page by making the periods 14 points. Another trick is making your paper 2.25 spaced. But really that's only if your desperate. I tend to e-mail most of my papers in so unless the teacher prints em and reads em there's a chance they could catch these things when they open it in word.

That's the traditional way, but both ways are acceptable. Seriously, no one's counting spaces.

true...that's where most of my bad college grades have come from.
Fuck it, cheat away.

Add transitional or filler sentences. It really adds quite a bit of length. You can also try changing the margins ever so slightly.

I have always used one space after a period, which is the convention, MSoffice will even agree.

Household Hacker is a notorious youtube troll. Look through some of his videos...like the one where you can supposedly make high definition speakers with a penny and a paper plate. Or turn a tv remote into a police scanner. People always try his shit and it never works.
I just tried this on a 14 page paper of mine, and it added about half a page, which doesn't seem to go along with adding a whole page to a 6 page paper. Meh.

I agree, but the fact remains, the OP got this from Household Hacker. He just released that vid. Also, you should check out kipkay's vids, they're way better/realistic than HH.

Haha, I was watching Household Hacker's videos again the other night and I found one where he made "hover shoes"...something to do with magnets. The whole thing was so dumb.
Or one where he powered a tv with a AAA battery by duct taping it to an audio cord...
Or this other one where he cooked a turkey (a 2 lb turkey...most likely a chicken) using a lightbulb and DVD-Rs, in an hour.
So yeah, the period trick makes your essay slightly longer, but not so much that you shouldn't be able to think of a little more to say to do the same thing.

Forget adding half a page, here's how you can double the size of your essay:
1). For every meaningful word, look up it's definition in a dictionary.
2). Replace the word with its definition.
3). Done.
This way you can double the size of your essay, or more!

Example:
Dismiss from the mind adding one of two equal parts of a unit of measurement of documenting or recording quantity; here's how you are able to increase twofold the total number of elements of your analytic or interpretive literary composition :
1). For every meaningful unit of language that native speakers can identify, look up a concise explanation of the meaning of it in a reference book containing an alphabetical list of words with information about them.
2). Switch seemingly equivalent items that are the word and the concise explanation of its meaning.
3). We have arrived at completion.
This way you can increase twofold the total number of elements of your analytic or interpretive literary composition, or more!

That's a pretty good idea as long as you use it with discretion. Otherwise you end up with your example which, while having some impressive sounding parts AND being longer, sounds clunky and robotic (ie, terrible).

Never use a long word where a short one will do.

The period trick really only works because when you change the size of each period, it changes the size of the space between the lines of text, essentially putting less lines per page in your paper. Theres no problem with that, except if you have a super anal teacher that would count the lines on each page and compare them to the rest of the class. I've had teachers like that in high school, not in college though. You should probably figure out if your teacher/professor is that anal before you try this.

You could type the essay instead of posting on totse. I hear that works wonders.
I remember one time in college I wrote like a fucking paragraph for a homework assignment and padded it out to look like a page.
Shit, I wish I still had it around because it looked soooooooooo obvious. The teacher knew straight away but ended up laughing because he knew the score. The margins were caved in from all directions, the font size was up a size or two from normal, there was line spacing, charecter spacing... Shit, good old days.

Hahaha. I don't make it this blatant but trust in my judgement when I proclaim to you that I too believe in the laws of bullshit and on many occasions invoke their wordiness to extend not only the length but also the intricacy of my works.
Another great tip is to write EXTREMELY LONG ASS SENTENCES, and put perplexing buzzwords that nobody has heard to join the different parts of the sentence. The teacher will be unfamiliar with the word and not wanting to look ignorant will skip over the sentence, even thought it may very well be a meaningless and incoherent sentence. Use with caution, I haven't really done this since grade 10.

Well..
This is just ridiculous.
As a college student myself, I understand how papers can be a complete pain in the ass.
But this method of "cheating".
Seriously.
Most professors care more about the student using the proper, required format.
And the actual material, context, quality of the paper.
Than how long it is.
So you are a few paragraphs off..
Basically, 9 times out of 10, they'll give you another week or so to redo the thing, and add more length to it.
Attempt a better grade.
Don't bother taking the classes unless you have the maturity to actually learn something.
So many idiots nowadays.
Dumbasses.

This post is going to have a lot of ranting in it, so don't read it if you don't want to read ranting.
I agree with most of your post, but you're wrong about getting extensions. Most profs will not allow them without a damn good reason. It should not take that long to write a short paper, especially one that doesn't even require actual research, i.e. peer-reviewed journals as sources. Most high school papers are ridiculously short, maybe seniors will have to write a 15 page paper once or something like that. Most papers will be under 10 pages. In lower level English classes in college, the papers will all be under 10 pages. They do not take that long to do if you sit down and do them. Somehow tons of people fail to figure this out. The more time spent wasted on whining about the assignment or trying to find shortcuts means the longer it'll take to get the damn thing done.
Some instructors care about format, some care about a properly developed and supported argument, some care about other stuff. You have to figure out the aspect your professor wants you to focus on, and focus on that part the most. I've had professors who went batshit crazy over grammar and spelling, but didn't mention format. I've had others who couldn't care less if you had spelling typos, they wanted it in MLA, APA, or Chicago style with no errors in the formatting. Some professors want a mix. Some only care about your argument.
The bottom line is that most undergrads are fucking lazy when it comes to writing papers. Honestly, it's not hard at all to write a paper. You just organize your topic, write it , and then edit it. Editing is the most important step, and it's the one practically no one does. I studied literature in college. I knew tons of people who pulled all-nighters and turned in shitty papers without even bothering to edit. Needless to say, they received shitty grades.
I usually wrote my papers a week ahead of time, and then went through 3 drafts before I had a final copy. I never stressed about papers because I just did them ahead of time. I always overheard people talking about how they hadn't started and it was due the next day. That's bad practice for college and bad practice for future employment. It's also stressful and makes the assignment blow far more ass than is necessary.
This bullshit 'trick' about 'changing the margin size' will not work for any professor who is paying attention. Sitting down for 20 minutes to write an extra half page would make the paper better.
It seems like people don't realize that reading and writing are two fucking basic yet extremely important skills that are used on a daily basis. They think writing classes are a waste of time, when in reality they can be very useful for getting jobs later on. No one gives a shit if you're uber smart if you can't type a proper CV or write short statements for a job application.

I bet there are many people who are confident they can stretch out a paper to look long enough using these various methods.
The question is, what do they do when they get a paper with a word count?
No it won't. You're supposed to have two spaces after the end of a sentence.
As far as I understand, it's acceptable, but it's not something you need to do.
From what I was told is that it originated during when people used type writers, which didn't leave enough of a space.

its all about the flow of the paper.
larger periods = better flow.
