Edit: Final- It was Majesty. I highly recommend you check it out. Its fun, it doesn't ask much of you and I've never played a game exactly like it.
Okay so this is what I remember:
Its a top down, RTS-view game where you create structures and train hero type units specific to the structures you build and the catch is you don't control the heros yourself. They wander around killing shit and raiding witches lairs (and the like) and collect gold. They then return and you receive a portion of the gold to make more buildings, train more heros and eventually win the map. So.. what was the name? I can't fucking remember for the life of me and I'd love to play it again. I'll edit this if I can remember more details.
First Edit: It was from the late 90's and it was for PC.
Second Edit: I can remember four of the units you could train; Rogues, Wizards, Sol-something (you had to build a sun worshiping building to train them and it excluded another type of unit which I cannot remember) and halflings that increased building construction speed..
Third Edit: I can now remember dwarves and elves were both trainable units but you could only have one or the other. Damn these fuzzy details I just want the damn name!

Doesn't sound like the game you're after, but it sounds something along the lines of Dungeon Keeper.

Ever since I posted this I've been searching over Gamefaqs master list and dungeon keeper caught my eye but it wasn't it. Close but not it. I'm adding shit into the first post that I've remembered since however.

Reminds me of Actraiser. It isn't Actraiser, mind you, but it reminds me of it. Actraiser is probably better.

Normally I'd call this a bump. Normally, however, I didn't just spend a fucking half hour reading wikipedia articles on video game developers hoping to get lucky and find this damn game. Also, I fucking googled it. If a overzealous moderator see's this, cut me some slack. I'm desperate to find out what the fuck this game was called.

I'm gonna say it's a Warlords game. Probably 3, given the timeline.

Oh how that gave me hope. The graphics weren't quite right though. I came back to Heros of Might and Magic over and over because it felt right but it isn't at all unfortunately. The game looks a whole hell of a lot like Starcraft and the units were almost all the size of marine/zergling/zealots. The catch where all these games have fallen ill is you don't actually control the units you create. They wander around doing class specific things on their own and I think the most direction you can really give them is to set a rally point.
The worst part of this is it was my ex girlfriends game and theres no fucking way I'm calling her and asking. But I'm nearly that desperate.
Thanks for the effort so far guys, someone is bound to get it.
Edit: I did look at all the games posted and while some where hopefuls, none were it.

Glad to help.... I love you too. :o
EDIT: Also glad you didn't have to call the ex. I can understand the desperation though. Almost every week there's another song or movie that drives me crazy like that.

LOL.
Repayment is unnecessary. If you're actually serious, though, I'm not one to turn anything down.

Yeah I know I've been reading about it and searching for more information and screenshots since you said Majesty and I googled it to see what was all out there. This is pretty sweet- http://pc.ign.com/articles/933/933624p1.html
Man I can't believe it didn't come up on google when I was searching earlier. warrior halfling elf sol ranger rogue -everquest -wow and literally 23 pages in and not the word Majesty once.
While I was installing the game (Which I just got by magic of course [If anyones going to bust my ass for pirating a eight year old cult game, instead please point out where I can buy it at 3:54am and not get my credit card stolen.]) This came up and I lolled.

Short from posting the torrents name and getting somebody pissed at me (and with three seperate moderators in the thread I'd really like to be cautious), I'll be vague. If your on the bay search for the gold edition torrent. I got it in little over an hour at around 250kb/s.

My understanding of the rules is that you're allowed to suggest torrent sites, like Piratbay, but not direct links to torrents. I don't think you need to try to be sneaky about it. :p
In my forum, I'll even allow direct links as long as the material in question isn't copyrighted or licensed in teh U.S.
Dunno. I never liked that rule anyway.

Yeah its a bit of a shyte rule but on the other hand nobody likes it when totse gets unwarranted attention (To say nothing of hotwiring public displays).
