So I just finished reading the Space Odyssey quadrilogy and watched 2001 again. I saw this title on the tv guide page in the newspaper a few days ago and will probably rent it if it's available. Now, do totseans have any opinions on this movie? I never knew it existed and most other people I've mentioned it to haven't either.
Jon Lithgow is usually alright.

I don't see why not. I haven't ever heard much about it but supposedly it's not as good as 2001. Kubrik didn't direct 2010 either. I'm sure it's watchable at the least.

more like 2001: an extremely fucking boring odyssey.
don't get me wrong...it's an excellent and breath taking film. infact, I own it. but uugggggh, it was so boring. I have alot of patience too.
I imagine the sequels to be just as boring, yet nowhere near as good. so I'll never even waste my time.

Sounds like you have pretty shitty taste in film if your idea of an excellent movie is one that's "extremely fucking boring."

2010 is a pretty good movie, I have it on my computer. It's worth renting, at least.
The special effects are even better than 2001, and it has plenty of big expensive spacecrafty-sciencey stuff in it to amuse you. And russian chicks. It's not as long winded and confusing as the first one, it's more like a normal science fiction flick than a philosophical and religious mindfuck. The end bit (with hal) I found to be very tense, and quite touching.

I really wish they would make a movie version of the rest of the series as well, because the other books are just as solid.
If you've only seen or read 2001 and 2010, you should really do yourself a favor and read the other books as it explains all the weird shit that doesn't apparently make much sense in 2001...I'm just glad Arthur Clarke lived long enough to write 3001 because the Space Odyssey series is the only Sci-fi literature I've ever enjoyed reading.

This is a review that I can agree with.

I've read all the books and seen 2001. Just need to find a video store with 2010 as I'm on dial-up.
Judging by replies I'll rent it after the holiday party season is over.
