they're trying to cut back costs so privateers and others besides factory teams can be successful, same thing with having cosworth supply the next f1 motor for all teams, or other teams can elect to use their older designs, but they're going to be more restrictive. hell, honda couldnt afford to be in f1 anymore with its spiraling costs. i hate how they're going to have hybrid f1 cars soon (kers) but it'll make it a little more interesting.

yeah, i think its complete shit that they shortened it, invalidating all records, or atleast making them impossible to compare. they could work on making the track safer, but this accident was a freak accident.

The refuelling ban and standardising cars - people say that this will make F1 more interesting because the races are about the drivers rather than the cars.

Well, I've been to see an A1GP race at Brands Hatch where all the cars are built by Lola, and no, they're just as boring. In fact, they are even more boring because you don't get the cool technical stuff to listen to. The race was still a fucking procession but I didn't get to see and hear all the (albeit marginally) different cars.

I can't see it being a good thing for the automotive industry in general. Formula One is supposed to be the absolute top end of motorsport. If automotive engineers can't push the envelope here, then they can't hope to develop their road cars. Things like seatbelts, rear-view mirrors, rollover bars, carbon brakes, traction control, practically all major mechanical developments in the motor car were all developed for racing cars. True, in fifty years we might all be driving ultra-clean hybrids that do 150 miles to the gallon and have heated massaging blowjob seats, but I'd hope that they perform better than today's cars too.

The 1000-foot track rule is only supposed to be temporary. The reason they did it is because the physical materials that the motors are built out of just aren't up to the stresses put on them at that speed and RPM, so the track shortening is just supposed to last until engine building technology catches up to the requirements of Top Fuel racing.

Ford spend £10million building 25 RS200 Evolutions. You know, the Ford Escort sized rally cars that did 206mph and 0-60 in 1.8 seconds that killed spectators and got Group B banned they were so stupidly fast.

Some restrictions are needed, but not them draconian measures. Just simple things like restricting rpm and throttle body size, so manufacturers scrabble to develop the most power out of a standard sized throttle body.

I remember a few years ago when Renault won, there were certain standards and restrictions on the engines, but Renault's engines somehow developed so much more torque than all the other cars it just pulled like a fucking train out of corners. That was exciting. Their engineers must have been so pleased. They used the same bore and stroke and a V8, but they managed to squeeze that little bit more from it than everyone else.

Either that, or just restrict total yearly spending to £10million or something.

Thing is though, any developments that make it inherently more exciting get banned. Anyone remember/heard of that development of Lotus' in the 70's? They had a ground-hugging skirt under the car that did something to the air pressure essentially sucking the car onto the floor and they could take hairpin bends at like 120mph and stuff, so their drivers had to wear RAF pressure suits to not pass out from the g-forces. That was exciting! But also banned :(

^ it got banned because if the ground effect system suddenly lost pressure (through damage, or if it went over a bump or piece of debris, or if it grounded out) then the car would lose almost all its downforce and almost literally fly off the track.
