View Full Version : I fucked up my computer

So here's the story. I was going to transfer some stuff over the network, but I wasn't part of the same domain on the network. So, I changed the domain to WORKGROUP and restarted. Problem is that I was originally part of a network at my old college, and that network stuck, as did the security protocols for it, and I can no longer log on. All because of the changed domain. I've been trying to get through, using Trinity Rescue Kit, ophcrack, and anything else I can think of, but nothing has gotten me through. I'm effectively locked out of my own computer completely until I can fix this, so I can't even log in to edit anything in Windows.

I was hoping someone knew either a way around this, or the registry value that holds the Domain value for windows and some way to edit this registry value. Maybe through Trinity Rescue Kit or some other regedit program I can run on a bootable cd. Please, any help is welcome. I'm desperate at this point. I'm good with computers, but this one stumps me.

Thank you guys.

Wait.... you changed your network domain, and locked yourself out of the computer...? I think you fucked up somewhere else dude...That shouldn't happen. You should still be able to log on to the local machine.

No, that's exactly what fucked it up. Check out these resources I've found...this is my problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317049/
http://www.askdavetaylor.com/resetting_domain_on_windows_xp.html

And I can't log onto the local machine, because it has always been a part of this domain, and I don't have any local accounts that I know of. Trinity Rescue Kit resets the passwords, but I still cannot log in.

Someone out there has got to know a way around this. I'm trying everything I can...what else is there?

Have you tried doing a system restore?

As far as I know, my computer does not keep restore points, and even if it does, my windows cd is not the original that came with the computer, nor is the one I have able to recognize my hard drive (or my current windows install) because it's fucking Serial ATA. Jesus I hate Windows.

All you should have to do is turn it on, and press(and hold) F8. The option for a system restore should appear if it's there.

And what if it's not?

Use the XP CD. Even the earliest XP CDs should have windows restore on it. I'd try that next.

The only problem with that though is that my hard drive on the laptop is serial ata, so it isn't recognized immediately by the windows disk I have, so my windows installation cannot be found by the cd. I would install RAID drivers, but I don't have a floppy drive either. Fuck.

Please anyone? There's got to be someone out there with an idea...anything...

Two ways : 1) link to your windows install using ERD commander to reset user accounts and passwords. That should work brilliantly.
2) Create a windows install disk using nlite/vlite and add in the drives for you HDD,then you willl be able to run windows automated system recovery
