For the past few months I've been smoking pot out my window.

Open the window.
Set up a fan.
Exhale out the window.
Air freshner the room.
Leave a wet towel at the base of the door the whole time.

Works alright, hallway still kinda smells like weed but its not a big deal.

Well now that its cold out, I've been smoking hookah in my room. Same setup. But because we have about 5 people doing it we don't blow out the window. Besides, half the fun is blowing big clouds of smoke. Unfortunately I got caught twice in the last week. Ideas?

I'm thinking about attaching some magnetic tape around the frame of the door and to a tarp or sheet of plastic. Then we can quickly and easily attach/detach the tarp from the door and do it many times. For the bottom of the door we would leave the wet towel. The problem with just putting duct tape over the gap between the frame and the door is that whenever someone wants to leave we have to remove all the tape. Kinda a pain in the ass.

Keep the whole towel routine. Maybe some masking tape on the door too.

I like the vacuum (damn, that word is spelled funny!) idea, but I would add this modification: add an extension to the vacuum cleaner's tube (this thing (http://www.muppa.nl/images/CVC5682A.JPG)) that consists of: more tubing, an activated charcoal chamber, and more tubing. Activated charcoal will filter the hell out of your smoke, and the baking soda should take care of the rest. It'll look like this:

Where the *****s are activated charcoal. Put some cottonballs and cotton fabric (from an old tshirt) on each end of this chamber, to hold the charcoal in.

good idea, but the enjoyment of smoking hookah would be killed by running a vacuum the entire time. what kinda fan you using? i'd say get one of those box fans, a pretty powerful one, and have that facing out the window with a good seal around it to keep air its blowing out from coming back in. tape off your vent. crack ur door open and see if the draft can put out a lighter. if it can then you should be good (in addition to the air freshener thing)

additionally, you could go to home depot and get a piece of rubber tubing, and rig it to the window next to the fan and pass it around and have everybody blow into it after they take a hit from the hookah.

You've got to filter the air. Even if you don't use a vacuum, you should hook up a fan and tubing system to a filtration device. There's just no way you can move all of the air out of the room. Ideally, you would exhale into a tube/funnel, which would go to an activated charcoal filter, which would then bubble through some water, which would then go out the window. It all would have to be driven by a pump.

Fresh popped popcorn is good at masking the reefer smell and feeds the munchies too. :p

Couldn't you just blow through a one-way valve into the chamber?

You'd have to blow the smoke out rather than just breathe it out, but that way you wouldn't have to have a vacuum cleaner or pump running

I used to smoke pot in my dorm room, by taking an empty toilet paper tube, stuffing it with a bunch of dryer sheets, and breathing out through that.

Sometimes when I was too lazy to do that I would just take bong hits big enough that I could completely absorb them into my lungs and just breathe out some CO2 lol

These are all great for smoking pot because the purpose is to get high.

With hookah you want to blow large milky puffy white clouds of smoke, not blow out a window or into a fan. That's why I'm looking more for ideas on making the door air tight and quickly ventilating the smoke as opposed to hiding the smoke from the start.

I figured if the door was air tight and we gave it a few min to air out and spray febreze then the smell wouldn't matter, nor would the amount of smoke. It would all be gone by the time the door was opened.

Your idea seems solid then. Usually sheesh smells sorta fragrant anyways, not like cigarettes or anything. They might just think you are fruity for having your room smell like mangos and mint all the time lol

Okay, so scratch on the vacuum idea? Seal the door well. Use duck tape. Install a large box fan in the window and crank it up all the way to get the "funky" air out.

Get an apartment.

How is the a/c set up in your building/room? Is there a unit in each room, or a central unit in the building with vents running to each room, or what?

Remember, in order to ventilate a room you have to have air flow out and air flow in.

I think the best thing to do is put a fan in the window, blowing out and well sealed, and leave the door unblocked.
That way, the fan will create a negative pressure in the room relative to the rest of the building which will cause air to be sucked through the cracks in the door (& other crevasses) and make it impossible for the smokey air to leave the room through anywhere but out the window, unless it's windy outside and air is being forced into the window.

What I mean is, take the flexible tube and feed it through the window about a foot or two out and then close the window on the tube but not enough to pinch it. Then put a few strips of duct tape over the open part of the window. (make sure the tube rests in the corner of the window). That way, all of the smoke will just go into the great outdoors and you'll end up with a rubber tube that smells like weed instead of a hallway that smells like it.

I'd go with the fan in the window idea, just make sure that nothing is coming in around the sides of the fan. Cover the corners so you're getting the most suction possible, then just run that bitch on high.

For the door seal, you can find strip magnets at hardware stores, as well as velcro, which is a more durable option, though not so quiet. Cut tarp out a bit bigger than your door, velcro on the wall around the frame, then velcro the edge of the tarp. For the bottom, fill 1-2 tube socks with rice and sew/attach them to the bottom edge of the tarp, so they weigh it down and seal off the door cracks better.

Or, for crazy awesome ventilation, just get a fucking powerful industrial grade fan that will create such intense negative pressure in your room that no smoke can escape into the hall.

Because he's smoking to be cool, why else would he care so much about smoking a hookah inside his dorm with 5 of his friends? Why else would he post pictures of people smoking from hookahs? The kids a tool and is willing to risk his entire education and his parents money so him and his friends can blow smoke rings inside. I bet they sit around and try to look cooler than each other.

Hookahs suck anyway, I've had one for years and haven't used it much at all.

Negative pressure is your friend, as the others have said. If air is being sucked in through a cracked open door, there is no way for the smell to get out...


Just wondering, do you people at uni over in the US have patrol people walking up and down your halls? Over here there's no-one at all, at least not in my student accomodations.

Everyone puts condoms over the detectors and just smokes inside, everywhere. We've also mastered the 30 second dash to the alarm box to hit the "reset" button if the alarms do go off. Which is normally caused by a faulty detector which they can't be arsed to replace.

Hookah doesn't get you high like MJ. The whole point is to blow large amounts of smoke or smoke rings. You can't feel the smoke when you inhale or exhale. If you aren't going to be blowing smoke you might as well just have a hose hooked up to nothing and suck air. The whole point of smoking hookah is because its fun and its even more fun when you have people to spend the time with and talk to.

I don't have to explain myself to you. I enjoy smoking hookah, cigs, and pot by myself and with friends. If I wanted to look cool then I'd do it outside where people could see me, correct? No need to be so critical of other people.

i dunno if it was mentioned, but one thing i found that helps, even if you're going to plug the door cracks, is to figure out which way the air is moving. hold a lighter next to the door crack and see which way the flame blows. the reason this is good to do, even if you seal the door, is if you miss a spot, if the air is blowing out, it'll still go through that hole. if it's blowing in, you wouldn't have to be AS careful when sealing the door.

in terms of how to seal it, magnetic strips is a good idea, something i've though of doing myself as well. rather than putting a tarp over the entire door, maybe cut it in a large upside down U shape and just put it around the frame. maybe use both magnets and velcro on the door and just magnets on the doorframe. that way the door can still be opened and the tarp stays on the door, but it can also all be removed.

well, if you want to smoke weed, then get a vaporizer.

I'm just surprised you don't have a smoke detector in your room. There's one in every room at my university.

Anyways, the smell may be leaking out through other places than the door. There aren't vents in the ceiling? is your room air conditioned?
