Don't know if this belongs here, but you guys seem to know your stuff. A friend of mine is looking to buy a new laptop, to be used mainly for games, but isn't sure what will give him the best bang for his buck for around £1000. He said he's looked at VAIOs but the good spec ones are too expensive. So I'm hoping you guys can help me find some bargains, suggest some good laptop and tell me what to avoid.

Also, before you say. I told him he could build his own PC for a lot cheaper, but he's set on a laptop for some reason. (He's looking for something with a good screen size too).

Cheers queers.

- Shit battery life.

my roommate has a massive toshiba laptop with 2 geforce 8800gts in it.

I dislike the idea of a gaming laptop, but the above poster is a bit wrong in some aspects. It has incredible speakers (probably better than my 30$ external ones), it has a very big screen (~20"), and decent battery life (1 hour). He also got it for only $1400.

Still, I highly suggest a gaming desktop and a portable laptop. I have a dell xps laptop which has good battery life, it's very light, and can somehow play fallout 3 decently.

You must have some really shitty speakers then.

it has a very big screen (~20")

A whole 20"? WOW! Must be fucking huge too.

and decent battery life (1 hour)

He can use it for one whole hour without having it plugged into the wall? Damn, that's fucking amazing.

He also got it for only $1400.

Only $1400? Jeez, just a $1000 dollar premium to have a computer you can use anywhere (for one hour).

You're not really proving me wrong here, dude.

Why does he have to prove you wrong dickhead?

Gaming laptops are a viable alternative for a lot of people. Anybody with half a brain will recognise that they're not going to be as good as a gaming PC but they're sure as shit a better option than carrying around a netbook when you're on the move.

Maybe if you didn't have permanant residence in your parents basement and moved around a fair bit for work then you'd appreciate the option of having a more powerfull laptop. It's not allways practical to lug a complete pc around with you when you're spending one or two nights in a hotel before moving on.

I quite enjoyed having my laptop with me while I was in europe. A couple of hours was enough to relieve some boredom on long train rides. Then I could just plug in when I made it to the hostel/hotel. And most hostels over there have free wi-fi which is a bonus.

Because that's what he set out to do, dipshit?

Also, I never said there's anything wrong with laptop's in general. But paying a large premium for a laptop specifically to play games is a fucking stupid idea. The top end parts are almost never available in mobile forms, therefore the laptop will be outdated in six months, and you'll have paid $1500 for a laptop that can't run the latest games worth a shit. A laptop, that even in it's prime was only able to play games untethered from an outlet for a whole 1 hour before being a big ass paperweight.

Everything this guy said and I have a thousand other reasons for not doing this that I don't feel like going into... just don't get a laptop strictly for gaming. Get it for being a portable work platform... and then put games on it to kill time between using it for something actually useful.

Unless you're rich... in which case you should buy ME a laptop because I'm poor.

They are expensive. You should be looking at something like €1700 for a good one. I have a few high end Sony Vaios but mine were... free. I pity the fool who pays good money for this shit.

OpiateSeclorum868

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with using a laptop for gaming, just don't go buy one for top of the line gaming.

Buy a cheap laptop for work, throw some Half-Life, Deus Ex, and Fallout on there and you're all set. Then build a decent gaming rig for your home to play the latest and greatest. Will end up costing less than one blazing fast laptop with one hour battery life, and it will be a better all around experience.

I have a few high end Sony Vaios but mine were... free. I pity the fool who pays good money for this shit.

Man, where are you getting all this free Sony shit? A few high end Vaios and a PS3? Is the CEO of Sony one of your preferred customers or something?

Nowhere did the OP or the person you replied to suggest that a gaming laptop was better than a gaming PC you dumb fucking inbred cockjockey. Anybody with half a fukn brain knows that a gaming pc is better than a gaming laptop and likewise a gaming laptop is likely to be more expensivce. Congratulations on stating the fucking obvious there captain retard.

Just because you're a tight ass who spent $400 on your schmick gaming pc doesn't mean other people aren't prepared to blow a little money for the privelidge of being able to play recent games whilst on the road.

Go save some more food stamps.

Fixed.

Also, if people want to flush their money down the toilet that's fine by me. I just tend to be a little more frugal whether I have a lot of cash or not. All I'm saying is buying a gaming laptop is a waste of money because it'll be outdated in no time, isn't upgradeable, and has shit battery life. If you want to argue with me, how about you refute those points instead of hammering on the keys desperately searching for a new expletive to interject between all your thoughtless rambling?

Yeah, well I'd rather have a gaming laptop than nothing at all. You ever tried to fit a pc and a widescreen lcd in your luggage?

You spent 30 dollars on speakers and you want to use them as a comparison standard? How the fuck is 1 hour decent, that's fucking shit. Why the fuck would you want a laptop that can only be portable for a fucking hour?

One hour isn't that bad. If you want more then you should consider getting a notebook and not a gaming laptop. I think when you factor in dual video cards to a laptop configuration you've got to make some sacrifices in terms of battery life.

Thanks for all the helpful replies guys...

I know a desktop would be much better and cheaper, but that's not what I'm asking for. So, does anyone have any suggestions? The laptop doesn't have to match up to a top of the range PC, just be good enough to play current games. To make things easier, can anyone suggest me a laptop that will play...Let's say Fallout 3, on high settings? Keep in mind it also needs to have a decent screen size.

Cheers.

Yes, they are pretty shit creative zen speakers. The point is his laptop has 30$ creative zen speakers built into his computer (not literally of course) with as much volume as you'd ever need and and decent sound clarity. Notice his computer also has these things called USB ports so he can always plug in external speakers. In my op I guess I shouldn't have called them incredible speakers, I meant incredible for a laptop speakers.

A whole 20"? WOW! Must be fucking huge too.

Yes, that's why I called it a massive laptop.

He can use it for one whole hour without having it plugged into the wall? Damn, that's fucking amazing.

Or he could use it anywhere with a 3 prong socket for as long as he wants.

My other roomates and I give him so much crap for a gaming laptop, so I don't even know why I'm defending him (probably your attitude). I called you a bit wrong in some aspects, not to prove you wrong entirely. The point is he can take a computer capable of playing CoD4 on max settings anywhere he wants(with a 3 prong socket), and not have to lug around a desktop + monitor + keyboard + speakers.

Christ, why can't he just wait until he gets home to play video games? Does he have to be playing games every fucking second of every day?

God. Am I the only one who can sit on a train for 25 minutes without pissing around with electronics or checking my e-mail?

Supposedly my laptop is able to run fallout 3 on minimum if that helps, know its not what you are asking but for £400 you cannot really complain plus that leaves your friend £600 to build himself a decent pc!

Oh and of course: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152233
With WIFI on it lasts about 2-3hours and then playing games it lasts about an hour and a half so still ends up a paperweight but then again if i am playing games on it it is generally at home!

ASUS have some really good specs which shit all over HP.

If you want a laptop for at least decent gaming, i suggest you go no lower than 1,500.

Have a look at this one; http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=100_56_120&products_id=34853

:::Quick spec list:::

CPU: Core2Duo 2.53 GHz
MEMORY: 4 GB DDR2
GRAPHICS: NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT 1024 MB
HARDDRIVE: 320GB
OS: Vista Ultimate
DISPLAY: 15.4"

OTHERS: Bluetooth, 1.3MP camera, card reader, fingerprint scanner...

Note, its in AUD, so it should equate to 1,456.70 (USD)
Also, don't expect to be playing the latest games on high settings. Though FEAR plays flawlessly on maxed out settings, and crysis on Medium-low settings.

Good lord man, just build a gaming desktop, laptops are gay unless you need to do spread sheets on a 20 hour flight.
