So I get my license in January, and I've had my heart set on a mustang. I just cant decide on year (preferably 2004-2008). Only thing is I need to convince my dad to let me get the 5-speed 4.6L V8. Thats the one I really want. Of course he wants me to get the 4cylinder. Don't want that to happen. But if it does, how hard would it be (and money wise) to swap it out for the bigger engine?
Then hopefully sooner or later to swap it out for the Saleen s281 Supercharged.

Im asking what are the ups and downs of the GT from the years 2005-2008. And some sort of price ranges.

So this is going to be your first car?
Get something cheap to learn on THEN get the mustang.
I don't want to bust your dream of having a cool car and all but you will learn allot in the first 2 years or so. Listen to your dad.
Plus if you start with a shit box and you smash it then it wont really matter that much.

Dude... No. Just no...

Everything about the Mustang is crap. They're slow no matter what powertrain you have. Every person in America has one.

I'm not biased or anything, I think Mustangs look great. I think the price is great. I think the fact that you can get an icon of American history for that price is amazing.

But they're terrible. I usually find it hilarious if someone buys a crappy car, but for some reasons Mustangs make me actually want to inform people of their terribleness

GTFO our gearheads. you know nothing about how we run shit here.

to the op: everybody i know that got a mustang gt as a first car, including the fox body ones, and the sn-95 ones. basically all from the 80s to current day, ended up wrecking them. some were spectacular crashes, where they were lucky to survive. a v-8 mustang is not a good first car. the v-6 mustangs aren't too horrible, if you're deadset on getting a mustang. they drive like shit though, and i've driven fox body mustangs and the sn-95s. they are hoorrrible in the rain. being rwd, having most of the weight over the front, and having a live rear axel, makes it really easy to slide out, and lose control.

a good first car, in all honesty, would be a fwd vw/toyota/honda, with a stick too. you are quite possibly going to wreck it within the first year of having in (minor or major, its pretty proven to happen with new drivers), understeer that fwd makes is more stable than rwd, especially in bad climates. get the cheap, economical car, and save up money for once you're old enough to afford a mustang gt, and once you get some maturity behind the wheel. your dad knows whats up for a new driver, he was your age at one point in time, long, long ago, heh.

and also, as a new driver, buying your own car, you'd be lucky to get a mustang gt from 79-93 at an affordable price, and insurance is going to be quite expensive for a v-8 coupe. you might be able to get a 94-98 v-6 mustang for a decent price, but a fwd vw/toyota/honda would be alot better of an everyday car. alot of fox body mustangs (79-93) and the sn-95s (94-98 and 99-04) have horrible build quality in the interior, broken vents, switches that break and get lost inside the door card, freezing brakes, and just overall falling apart. not a good choice, when the interior falls apart it really feels like a pos car.

you dont know who the fuck we are over here in gearheads. most of us actually know what we are talking about, you know nothing. we dont care what you like. the op did not ask for you opinion on other cars, he wanted to know whats up on a mustang gt, and other cars that are affordable.

YOU KNOW NOTHING. you come in here offering a completely irrelevant opinion, nothing based upon facts, just your own damn opinion, and it contributed nothing to this discussion, as you do on the rest of totse, shit like that doesnt belong in gearheads, and especially not a thread on gearheads asking about a specific car and the pro's/con's of it.

i dont post as much because i only contribute when an opinion is specifically asked, or if technical knowledge is asked, and when i post i try to contribute to further the discussion, not bog it down with petty insults, and getting butthurt. we're assholes with strong opinions in gearheads (the regulars), and we have facts to base our opinions as well... you have opinions and no facts, you didnt contribute anything further to this thread, and, quite frankly, you're just a waste of space, time, air and internet bandwidth.

if i had as many posts per day as you i would be over 35k posts, but i dont, i have a real life, and other, more car oriented forums that i contribute to, but i like talking to the regulars here, and learning from diverse opinions on cars. i have a real life, and in totse, i dont go much out of the sections except for the ones where i know alot about the information at hand, or have something to contribute, rather than just some hot air complete with as much vulgarity you can put in. i bet you're in your early teens, you really act immature, and thats just from this thread alone. grow up and come back in a decade when maybe, just maybe you could be a little more mature, and contribute something to this discussion other than "oh that car looks damn good".

you know nothing about cars, and didn't contribute anything to further this discussion, so just GTFO. at the very damn least you could have put pictures up, and/or stated some first person facts you've found out about the car in question, but alas, you didnt. your opinion that you first posted was stupid, and after you got called out by a regular here, you got butthurt, and have resorted to trolling (i say trolling because you contributed nothing to the discussion). you are one sad, lifeless person. must suck being that lonely where most of your social contact is derived through the internet.

Maserati GranTurismo's cost more than a really nice house. If he own's a GT and mentioned getting you one of the new Challys, I wouldn't dismiss it as a joke in case he actually was half minded about buying you a new Challenger.

Yeah. I was looking into the challys though and its probably the best bet that he would get me the SE, but if I want the stick its the R/T. Which is about 8 grand more and has a 5.7L hemi V8. So he probably thinks Id kill myself with that to. But id settle for the SE, even though i wont get the stick (or speed) + its a sexy car. And if i am putting money into it, probably half, i kinda want the one I want

the only 4-cyl mustangs are the fox body ones, and the mustang svo is pretty damn sweet for being a four banger, (its the pinto motor with a turbo, faster than the 5.0 gt's of its day). but they're going to be a bitch to keep up, expensive, and quite rare. the 94+ mustangs have the 3.8l "essex" v-6s, which have also appeared in the thunderbird s/c with a supercharger putting out 230 hp and 330 ft/lb in its last few years. i'm pretty sure that you'd be able to retrofit that supercharger at a later date to a v-6 mustang, or use a comparable aftermarket kit, i'm pretty sure saleen has stuff for the v-6.

and actually, if you're into fords, the thunderbird s/c would be pretty nice, they have a much better interior than the mustang, and an independent rear suspension, just be sure to get a stick. my very very first car, that i had for a few months, was a 94 thunderbird with a 4.6, it was in the family since it was new, and by the time i had it it had 160k miles, the automatic trans was on its last leg, and the motor was going down the shitter fast. i've heard of alot of issues from the AOD transmissions that were used.

a few picks that should be good, and cheap for a first car if you care about driving are:
a golf gti, miata (excellent driving cars, but little room), honda civic, 1G eclipse, and the 1st gen focus is a pretty good car, in svt form. or actually if it can be found at a decent price, the SVT contour is a damn fine compact sedan.

2008-12-16, 03:49
And i do want a stick.

good for you, its one of the best things to do when you start driving is to drive stick, its like riding a bicycle, and for a good car, check out the contour svt, they run from 3k to 6k, come only in a 5-speed, and have a good n/a motor in them.

those challengers look really nice in person, and the se's are not bad at all, its a shame that they dont come with a stick. for the price, its a damn good car, and the basic platform that those have came from the late 90s benz e-class, which was built like a tank mechanically. its the only thing good that came out of the daimler-chrysler venture. i bet if it wasnt for the 300c / charger / magnum, chrysler would be down the shitter by now.

sounds like you dad has quite a stable, i love those maserati's, i would love the quattroporte one day. i could understand if he doesn't want to teach you stick on those babies, but with a cheaper car, it wouldn't be quite a pain in the ass/wallet to fix the clutch if it was to break. sounds like your dad makes some good money to afford those, so it might be worth it to convince him to get a new car, or a certified pre-owned / fairly new "used" car. factory warranty makes dealing with stuff that breaks alot easier. maybe a new golf gti? or audi a3? (same basic thing, with awd available, and a much more luxurious interior). see if you and him could go test drive some new cars, its always the best way to pick out what you could see yourself in.

really, with discretion, and good driver training, you wont have a problem, but most drivers in the usa dont have good driver training, heck you dont need to be professionally tested to get you license here.

havent thought about going to test drive any cars yet but thats a good idea. Im gonna run that by him. Its just that when he gets home from work, he doesnt like to do shit. And hes only off every other saturday and sunday he likes to do nothing. But im sure i can get him one day.

And me and my dad test drove the quattroporte and we both agreed that it drives just like his 04 mercedes s430. So he didnt bother with it, so just looked into the GT and he loves the fucking car. The most I got out of him was "I wanna buy you a cheap car that you can learn in before you spend 25grand on a car" Then he said something about an explorer and I cut him off and then said something about an eclipse. He didnt say anything about that though. Have to try tomoro.

Wait, your dad covers his car with a cloth every night? Ha.

I would look into an older, cheaper mustang if you are set on getting a mustang. Late 80s to early 90s. Why does it have to be a mustang anyway? It's your first car. If you want that type of car, look for any cheap older two door cars with a V6 that happen to be for sale in your area.

OP I really wouldnt advise buying a mustang. Youre gonna be a broke ass teenager thats more than likely to wanna show off a bit at some point. Youre gonna be paying out the ass for gasoline with a v8 and once you get tied into the wrong end of the justice system, its gonna fuck you for a long time. I started out with a 3000GT VR-4 as my first car. Once I modded it, I was getting horrible gas mileage and Im still paying for the tickets that I got in it 4 years later.

You want something fast right? Consider this... Buy an older honda coupe and throw a fair amount of money into the suspension and chassis. You might not be fast going straight but around corners youll be able to drive through them like theyre nothing. I attended the first GT Live event they had in utah a couple years back and saw an RSX that was on a stock engine but had everything imaginable done to the suspension. He was being passed on the straigaways but was blowing by everyone through the turns. They had him racing in the same class as vehicles with 400+hp and he was finishing above 4th place in every race. Straight line racing is boring anyway.

Go with a mustang if you really want to. Nobody here has any control over what you do. Even though I hate hondas with a passion, I really respect them when theyre done right. Whatever you do, good luck with it. Insurance is also something to consider. Youre not gonna be on mommy and daddys insurance forever so when you go try to get your own, it might be a bit of a financial burden.

idk why but for that one post i though FWD stood for four wheel drive. Dont ask why. I just need to find a car thatll suit me for my needs and look good.

My dad goes on about safety first, doesnt care what it looks like. But i kind of want a car to experiment with and stuff. Also a stick

Dude... No.

We're talking about Ford, not Shelby.

Shelby mustangs are impressive, the engines that is. They still have a live rear axel, and they still have a terrible chassis.

The 2000+ are complete trash if youre looking for speed. Go for a 97-99 eclipse or talon.
2.0L turbo 5 speed AWD or FWD
A stock block is good for around 400hp on stock internals if done right.

the only 4-cyl mustangs are the fox body ones.

Not true. The 74 - 78 Mustang II also came with a 2.3 as the base engine.
They also look a hell of a lot better then the fox bodies, and in most cases are cheaper then them. Parts availability is going up too.

I paid about 6k for mine but you can find them cheaper. The trouble with them is that you probably wanna find a stock unmolested one. The engines in the 92.5-98 have a problem with the thrust bearing on the crankshaft. It causes the crank to walk a bit and it tends to destroy things. Theres a pretty easy fix for it though. Since the 6 bolt motors from the 90-92 are pretty easy to find, swap one of those in. It only takes changing a few wires and grinding down the newer style motor mount to install it on the older style motor. If you really wanna get the most out of it, tear the older style engine down and take the pistons out of the stock motor and have them machined to fit the older rods. Any questions you have about these cars, Id be happy to answer. Get me on msn if you would like. jdodds042@hotmail.com

xilikeeggs0

to the op: everybody i know that got a mustang gt as a first car, including the fox body ones, and the sn-95 ones. basically all from the 80s to current day, ended up wrecking them. some were spectacular crashes, where they were lucky to survive. a v-8 mustang is not a good first car. the v-6 mustangs aren't too horrible, if you're deadset on getting a mustang. they drive like shit though, and i've driven fox body mustangs and the sn-95s. they are hoorrrible in the rain. being rwd, having most of the weight over the front, and having a live rear axel, makes it really easy to slide out, and lose control.

Apparently we haven't met. I've had mine for 2 or 3 years now and I've yet to wreck it. I've been rear-ended and backed into, but I haven't hit anything except for a shopping cart and a pigeon with mine.

edit: Actually, I hit my mom once too. But that was on purpose, so it doesn't count.

If he wants you to get a 4 cylinder, get an Evo. :D

Realistically, get something you can afford. What is your budget?

There are tons of awesome cars out there you can get cheap. Look at a Fiero. It might be slow as shit, but it's probably one of the funnest cars you could drive, not to mention it isn't quite the easiest car to drive, you could learn a lot from it. When you're a driver with skill, drop a V8 into it and then you'll have a cool and fast car.

If it were up to me when it came to my first car, it probably would have been something like a Buick, or even cooler would have been an old VW bug. I don't care what anyone says, the older VW bugs are by far one of the coolest cars in the world.

Rocko

Although it is probably a bit late, I can add my experiences of a Mustang.

All I can say is, when me and my pa were in America in the summer, we rented a V6 Mustang, drove it from New Orleans to Vancouver and back, and by the time we managed to get it back to Hertz, it was dead. We could tell there was something amiss in Seattle, and it limped back across most of Louisiana.
Admittedly, we did drive 7000 miles in a week, but still, dead?! Brand new car?! It was all interstate!

Also, driving through the mountain roads in Washington (Highway 20, what a beast of a road :D!) and Montana was literally the scariest thing I've ever done. I was driving it judging corners as though I were in my car, but the handling on it was the single most terrifying thing ever. (Makes me sad knowing thats how a live axle handles, as my dream car has a live axle :( )

When we test drove that Charger too, the build quality of the interior just seemed soooooooooo much better in the Dodge.

And finally, the GT really was pretty underwhelming. Same suspect handling and decidedly average in the speed and acceleration stakes. Absolutely nothing to write home about. Or indeed travel home 10 hours on a trans-Atlantic flight and post on an internet forum.

The only good thing is the V6 had pretty good fuel economy.

EDIT: There is a guy in my town too, he imported an 08 Mustang GT. I see him all the time. In the garage.

Some other things too, remember a large engine is going to cost more insurance.
And why do manufacturers give a choice of FWD or AWD? Surely if they have the capacity to run a prop down the car, why not make it RWD or AWD?
Plus, I've driven since I was 17. Not all new drivers wreck their cars. In fact, I was onto my fairly powerful 214 by the time I was 18. Spun and crashed a total of 8 times, but no wreck. Most of the time I just got my mates to bend bits back into shape. Rover quality FTW!

I've got a fucking brilliant idea, how about you get yourself a car. Fuck getting your parents to pay for your shit, get some independence For fuck sake.

All I've gotten from this thread was "O Noes, daddy is going to buy me a Mustang, but not the one I want Q_Q" which makes you sound like a typical nobhead spoiled brat peppy, you should be 16/17/18 now? About time to get a job and start earning your own shit.

If you allow your dad. Stop whining to him about it (in fact, shut the fuck up about it completely to him), get a job, save and turn up to the house in whatever piece of shit you were able to afford flipping burgers part time. Yes, it won't be a shiney Mustang, but your father's respect for you as a man will go COMPLETELY off the scale, and better yet, you'll have a lot more respect for yourself and your car because it is YOURS.

Old Fox Bodies are too much over there are they? Buy YOURSELF one of those, and see it as a stepping stone until you can get yourself a GT500 someday.

You know it makes sense.

His dad is exceedingly wealthy and made the offer to buy his son a car, you Polski bastard. It's partly the sons choice on what he wants to do, turn the offer down, take it up, what he wants to get, etc.

Stop being so jealous already, just because you get by day to day eating Sauerkraut while riding the KMZ bus to the left handed screwdriver factory. If he decides to ask daddy for an M5 and then takes it for a joyride at a closed airstrip and flies off the end of a runway and kills himself, that's his business.

Gee fucking wiz, I've been back in Geareads for approximately 7 minutes now and I've already figured out who this month's retard is. Fantastic.

Of course it is the son's decision to take up the offer or not (Congratulations for stating the obvious, your mother must be incredibly proud of you), but it is the wrong thing to do. Parents should be teaching their children at that age that they need some god damned independence. Buying them a $25,000 sports car as their first vehicle is wrong in SO many different ways. Make your money, buy your own shit. At 16/17/18 people should learn this

I am interested in where the " Polski bastard" bit has come from? I know from you saying it that you are an incredibly thick individual, but I would like to know just how much of a moron I am dealing with here.

Don't. Buy a shitbox beater for $1000, run it into the ground/total it and then think about a nice car. I am 18. I was in your situation and your dad is right. I drove a 1998 oldsmobile 88 for 6 months before getting my 1980 camaro which is now ~400hp. Looking back, I realize that I probably would've screwed up if I didn't know what I was doing in this car RWD is forgiving when you know what the hell you're doing, but if you've just gotten your license your foot will be heavy and cockiness + power+ inexperience is a recipe for disaster.

6 months of experience != enough to know what you are doing.

Keep driving, grasshoppa, come back when you look back and thing 'gee I didn't know what I was doing then', then when you look back and think 'I didn't know what I was doing then, either', and then, when you think 'Hang on, I probably don't know what I'm doing now either!', that's when you'll have graduated the Nereth school of driving.

6 Months is more than enough to remove you from original asshole mistakes/behavior into a more calm collected driving state.

I've been driving for 3 years, city driving, without any accidents. That removes the right of some asshole with 1-5 more years of driving experience to call me "grasshoppa." Sorry champ.

^Heh.... 6 months may be enough to learn something but it is certainly not indicative of skill OR responsibility. I've been driving for 7 odd years and licensed for 4.5, and I STILL occasionally 'misjudge' what I'm doing (if really fucking around) and lose it. In the past 2 years I've calmed down a lot, and with the exception of a snowy day or an opportune race I usually drive to save gas..... It's not that I COULDN'T have handled a fast car in my teens... I learned FWD/RWD principles before I even got licensed.... it's more that I would have handled it too much. Even a FWD car with 100hp can be enough to wreck or die if you don't know what you're doing.

Regardless of the whole 'individual drivers are all different!' thing, there ARE trends. I wouldn't recommend a fast car to anyone under 20, and hell.... even to some people in their 20's! That being said, people will do whatever the fux they want anyway... I just hope that dumbasses don't get fast cars banned or something equally drastic...

Oh, and Anus... AFAIK Nereth doesn't necessarily have more driving under his belt than you, he's just a 'words of wisdom' kind of guy.

I just thought you had said you had only driven for 6 months, and implied that made you experienced.

Which is silly.

So I patronized you.

And hang on, do you mean 6 months after getting your actual liscence, or 6 months after getting in the car with an instructor?

Because 6 months after getting in the car with an instructor, you're still crap (the average driver).

And 6 months after getting your liscence, you're still irresponsible (the average driver).
