View Full Version : A Brand That Won't Charge $150

My friend is looking into a computer, and he wanted a Mac because he hates Vista. It's his parent's money, so I told him that he'd not like to buy a Mac due to the fact that they cost more than a PC. So, he wants XP. The only problem is that last we checked: Dell, HP, and Gateway all charged $150 extra to install XP. Is there any company that won't do this?

Has he used Vista recently or even at all? It's a good OS.
Sounds like he's been watching too many Mac commercials.

Eh, he's heard a lot of bad rumors. His grandmother has it (I've used it there, and it is a great OS), he just doesn't want Vista. I offered to install XP for him, but he wants it direct from the company, not from a $90 disc from TigerDirect. (That's rather stupid, but whatever, it's his computer.)

Outside of Netbooks such an option doesn't exist. Tell him to buy a Dell with Ubuntu and install XP over it. Heck for $10 I'll send him a copy of the Dell XP disks so he won't even need to get a CD key.

When he wants to be. Looks like he's fucked over and will have to take Vista if he doesn't want me to do it for him... >_<

Is he 12 years old?

He may as well get Vista, it's the standard. He's just going to gimp himself when he is confronted with a Vista machine.

I was a huge anti-vista fanboy, and I still am. Vista Lite however is godly.

Take out all the shit you don't need, that little fucker that keeps asking you cancel or allow, desktop manager fucker, and all the bloatware that comes with it and you've got a pretty sweet OS.

Set Administrator as the only account (or at least your account) so you won't be asked to log in as Admin to do simple things like install software and all the problems will be solved.

If you tweak it right (ie, remove all the Microsoft bullshit) there's actually some decent code beneath it.

Memory is utilized better, search is refined (don't remove the 500MB special search index thing), and the ability to change the size of partitions on the fly is pretty nice.

Overall it's a step in the right direction, with minor setbacks.

Your friend is a dumbfuck who doesn't know anything about computers and therefore shouldn't make these stupid requests.

If you're paying $100-$350 for an Operating System you should just turn everything off as apposed to removing them... At least that's what I do.

I paid money for the stuff I may want to use it one day. Take Speech Recognition for example. It's somewhat useless to most people but there is now an add on that will take voice commands to play music, etc. It's kind of neat.

Why doesn't he just uninstall vista and find someone with a copy of XP that will let him on theirs. That is what I did. my laptop came with vista but I put xp back on it.

I have a friend with a company unlimited XP disk that can have unlimited computers on it. I bet that wasn't cheap.

You mean Windows XP Enterprise. The company pays a monthly fee for it.

The problem with XP is that a lot of the newer laptops can't have XP installed on them. Their hardware just doesn't have drivers made for xp, etc.

I've encountered that problem a few times at work.

Mine didn't have a problem. It came with vista from the store.

Some do and some don't. I'm not sure why but I've tried installing XP on 4 laptops that wouldn't accept the installation in the past 3 months.

Simple solution: buy a whitebook. Configure it sans hard drive, or just w/o the OS.
