Is raw beef safe to eat? More specifically say a peace of tritip steak right out of the package from some place like Safeway? I understand that contamination is the main thing to be worried about, the fact that the meat will be tough would be a distant second. I know that raw beef is safe as is the case with steak tartar and what not, but are US beef standards high enough that I could eat whole (not ground) meat strait out of the package? Does it depend on your sours specifically? Any one a butcher?:D

personally i wouldn't buy normal pacakaged meat from the supermarket for this. in all odds, it would be fine, but its a chance i would personally rather not take.

go to a butcher and tell him your going to make steak tartar out of it. he is not going to kill you for the sake of a sale, so you will be pretty safe.

Yeah, go somewhere you can ensure the freshness and quality of the meat.

What everyone else said about the quality of meat, freshness, and whatnot.
I have a recipe that includes raw ground lamb. I always go to the best butcher in town and have him take a cut and grind it then and there. Raw bad meat is not something you want to fuck around with.

You can, my dad did so after my mother brainwashed me into becoming a vegetarian. It proved meat was safe and very awesome.

I've eaten raw beef marinated in lime juice (for fajitas). it was good.

Raw red meats can contain parasitic organisms such as tapeworms, hookworms, etc

There have been kidney failure and deaths associated with eating raw or undercooked hamburger.

Hamburger is a bit different since it's ground and comes in contact with areas that have previously touched raw meat(the grinding equipment).

If you're going to consume raw hamburger, make sure it's freshly ground.

Raw beef is delicious and it's quite common in many places, over here they serve it in restaurants and if you want to prepare it at home you can just specify to your trusted local butcher that you intend to consume the meat raw and he'll give you some nice parts.

Obviously I'd never eat raw beef from the supermarket, it has to be from a reliable good quality source.

Anyway, here I posted a couple of ideas on how to eat raw beef:

I saw martha stewart take a turkey up the ass on south park. I reccommend that approach.
