It has come time to refinish my marlin model 60 because it has chips and dings. What stain would you guys suggest? I am looking for something semi-glossy/glossy like most gun stocks are. Is there a certain kind i should get?

I have experience doing the refinishing, I refinished my m44 stock but I did not use a stain, I just used clear polyurethane. The polyurethane worked really well. But I am thinking this one needs a nice stain color to it.

Try Linseed oil. A buddy of mine uses it extensively and I'm considering using it on an old Mauser.

Phase 1 is almost complete. I think I am a sucker for blondes because i am tempted to not stain this one also and just apply poly urethan again.

Linseed oil and tung oil both look good when done right.

I would consider a follow up with the polyurethane for a long lasting protective "ohhh thats shiney" look.

Man I wish I would have had digital cameras when I was a young lad and worked with wood furniture!

Looks good so far, prep work is the most of it!

I stained my k98 with an alcohol based stain. I simply dissolved powdered wood dye in ethanol and stained it with it. Then I rubbed parafin into the stock, and grease, to bring out the wood grain (check my Mauser pics).
I left it at this stage, because I wanted matte, but for gloss, just buy some glosscote lacquer as used for air modelling and airbrush it onto the stock. Works neatly and it doesn't get scratched easily.

Well I guess I am a sucker for blondes. I went the simple way and and sanded to bare wood and finished with just a clear gloss polyurethan finish.

LOL. The m44 is a DIRTY BLONDE OK?

But I will have to refinish both of them eventually. the m44 has some scratchs i the polturethane so I may give her a sanding pretty soon. and a fresh coat of poly. the reason i lke the polyurethane is it is very water resistant. It is simple, easy to use, and durable.
