Is an M1 garand worth buying? Looking for a rifle for mid to long range defense.

The M1A is probably better for killin' people applications, but both are pretty cool.

No, everyone who's selling one thinks it's worth 3 times it's weight in gold.

What does CMP mean?

What does CMP mean?

Civilian marksmanship program. They sell m1 garands from field grade to rack grade to match grade. The cheapest ones are about 400$ and they are not in the best shape . They are the equivalant to car fixer uppers. They come in shootable condition but they are pretty dinged up.
the price went up a little, they are 500$ now :
www.thecmp.org/m1garand.htm

If you want one you need to get it quick, apparently the rack grade ones are all sold out which were like $300-$400. Now they have field grade and up.

also a while ago they got m1 carbines. i dont know if they have any left.
It says they have m1 carbines in. at around $400.

What would be a good gun alternative then?

Mini 14 is much more affordable($600 new) and uses the same action. I would just build an AR-15 at the price mini's are going for it would be just a little more to build a budget ar15. You can even build one for 600$ but I would just spend a little more for more reputable parts.

It would be cheaper to get a m1 carbine or m1 garnd from the CMP than to get a mini 14 though.
Or you could get a m1a which is pretty pricey.

Besides, the garand is kind of outdated weaponry. you could get a remington 742 or 7400 if you wanted a semi auto 30-06. I think they're around $600-ish now days.

I love my mini14 ranch. It is a nice reliable rifle. It is not the most accurate but it is more accurate than a sks or ak but less than a ar15, unless you get some kind of mutant mini.

about after market mags, don't listen to people who say you can't get them and they don't work. The after market 30 round mags work fine. People also say there are not accesories for them but now there are a lot of accesories coming out for the mini. Also the accu strut could fix the accuracy problems with the ranch rifle. They also have heavy barrel models but those arealmost the same price as ar15's now.

Most people base their opinions on what they hear about them and have never even tried the rifle for themselves. The 580 series mini14 has come a long way from the older models that everyone hates.

I dont think anyone HATES them, there are just better options(long term) that can be had with only a little more money.

My only problem with it is that I beat the crap out of my guns, and one wouldnt last me very long. I attended a carbine course a few years back and saw two fail badly during the second day. Apparently, no mini 14 has ever made it through the course.

So, if you are going to shoot it once in a while and you can find one cheap, go for it. If you are going to shoot a lot and often, spend another 200 and get an AR.

Any magazine fed killing machine is going to run much more than earlier this year.

m1 Garand is a classic. If I could get one for 300 Id be all over it.

Yup. I always keep a spare bolt in my pistol grip. Next to extractor parts, its one of the more common things to fail.

Ive been in several engagements, running around like a fool with an m9 in my hand and a busted m4 around my back. It REALLY pisses you off when you bring a dozen rifle mags and only get through one before your gun takes a major crap.

C'mon FN SCAR!!!!!!

I use the ergo grip. it came with a free gapper. something all these aftermarket grips should come with anyway.

As far as semi-auto rifles go, you can't do much better for yourself than an AR-15, at least not around the sub thousand dollar price point. The only catch is that it might not meet your criteria for mid to long range.

If you really need the range, then either an m1a or FAL would work. Something else to consider would be a heavy barrel bolt action, a la remington 700.

Dude yes you can, THE MINI 14 is under 1000 at $600. its about $400 ffor a used one. Also there are ar15s that are under $1000. I built my ar15 for $50 more thanmy mini 14. My mini was$600 and my AR15 was $650

I love the Ruger Mini 14. I had one when I was a kid, and with good magazines it will do anything you need it to do except shoot accurately. While there are ways to accurize the mini, these methods cost 100s of dollars. For the money, the AR-15 is the way to go.

If you want to get a M1 Garand for anything but plinking, buy a throat erosion gauge. This will allow you to determine the condition and future life of the barrel. If you don't mind rebarreling buy the cheapest one you can, and throw a new barrel on it and you will have a damn fine shooting machine. Keep in mind, every part on the Garand can be replaced for a nominal cost, so if you don't care about looks, you can get away with buying a pretty cheap weapon and fixing it up.

I would suggest a field grade garand fom the CMP if you want to go the garand route.

My ar-15 has seen over 5000 rounds and I havent even replaced a spring yet. It only hangs on wolf ammo and handloads using RL-7. Iv never shot a mini but they are great guns, but for the price you can get a better gun. If you get an M1 not only do you have to learn how to use it but you have to learn how to handle a large rifle, it takes practice.
