So I'm planning to study abroad in Madurai, India next fall. Anyone else do anything similar to this?
I'm not a university student so I've never travelled abroad for schooling but am friends with a good number of people who have. Probably the coolest one so far involved a friend spending ten months in Japan. Great stories.
I spent sometime all over south India as well some of the north. But Madurai is a fucking awesome place. I only spent a few hours there but I got a chance to see some of the temples.
Make sure you get a chance to see more of south India. Tamilnadu has got some great places to go like Kodaikanal, Pondicherry, and mahabalipuram. All cool places.

Absolutely, thanks. I'm definitely going to be traveling to other cities in the South, the North not so much.

I studied abroad in Tibet in May '07 and it was incredible, but something tells me India would be a little bit...different.
One awesome memory: Drinking yak-butter tea with Chivas Regal in it at 15,500 ft above sea level on the shore of a sacred lake.
What school do you go to? I think my alma mater is sending a class to India in the Fall.

Yeah I'm sure it will be really different than Tibet. What was that like?
I'll be living with a family and transporting myself thru the city on foot/bike ... I realized the other day that I am really going to be starting from scratch in an exceptionally different culture. The idea both fascinates me and scares the shit out of me at the same time and I love that. :D
