I've read a lot about what people don't like about their country on totse. so, if you were the president/prime minister/emperor, what would you do to make your country a better place?

personally i would make the justice system harsher and implement a program to stop certain people breeding and perpetuating their stupidity. i would raise minimum wage and tax the upper class more. and i would put my own house in order before i started worrying about foreign aid and peace keeping.

Basically if you want certain rights you would have to be able to prove that you can handle them...and what better way is there of doing that than taking a test!

I'd be very interested to know what "working with" entails. We've been "working with" the Israelis and Palestinians for years (on and off) and that conflict has hardly been resolved.

The Pakistanis and Indians need to both fuck off. Kashmir could be an area with shared administrative powers by both nations, overseen by the UN.

As for Taiwan, they would be integrated into the PRC, provided that they are allowed Special Administrative Zone status, much like Hong Kong.

As for the Israelis and Palestinians, I would revive both Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat, give each a knife, and let them fight to the death.

On a National Level:

First, I'd dismantle parliament, and the senate. All MPs would be arrested or reassigned to areas where they could be used, and party leaders executed.

All corporations would fall under the control of the state, and all production would be under strict government controls. A capitalist economy controlled by consumers would cease to exist.

Taxes would be raised astronomically, with the rich being taxed the most. A complete welfare system would be enacted with the entire population being fed and clothed by the state. There would be no homelessness. Every man and woman would have a job regardless of their education, as contributing to society would be an absolute requirement.

What constitutes a "contribution", however, would not be the same as it is now. The machinist, the scientist, and the artist all serve to enrich our lives and we must support each in turn.

An end to the prohibition of drugs with few negative health effects and little potential for addiction - this includes marijuana, LSD, psilocybin/psilocin, and the like. Heroin, meth, ketamine, and numerous other street drugs would remain illegal to produce, but possession would only result in confiscation and enrollment in an addicition program. Alcohol would be increasingly regulated and have special taxes associated with it - while under my drug philosophy it should be illegal, I doubt Canadians could deal without their booze. Tobacco would face a similar fate.

Freedom of religion would be preserved. However, the freedom to impose that religion would be completely eliminated. Belief would be as it should be; private. Groups who spew hatred ("God hates fags!"), bigotry ("God hates niggers!"), and ignorance (creationists) would be arrested under anti-defamation laws, and sent to prisons where they would be forced to work and educate themselves about the stupidity of their beliefs.

Removal of "special rights" for natives. Open the reserves up, and treat any resistance as hostile. No more claims that they "own the wind". Bullshit. We ripped their great-great-great-great-great Grandfathers off. Move the fuck on.

Education would undergo a massive reform - with children being taught that their duty extends to everyone in society, not just themselves. They would be encouraged to seek professions that they would both excel at and enjoy. By age sixteen they would be given a test similar to the G.O.A.T. in Fallout 3, or numerous career aptitude tests the world over. From there, their education would become specific to a "field" and would then continue onto more specific training as the situation warrants (clearly a scientist requires more time in school than a coffee shop attendant). This would hopefully produce a young workforce who are dedicated not only to their jobs but those around them. In the end, it won't really matter what you do for a living - the state provides all the essentials and then some.

The police and military would be merged into a more cohesive, better armed, better trained unit. Non-lethal solutions to civilian situations would be those primarily used. Deadly force should only be met with deadly force when all other options have been considered. Possibly streamline research towards creating a "phaser"-style weapon.

Go Green! Move away from petroleum fuel, and turn the prairies into a giant energy-generating station. Solar panels on every building.

Initially, dissent would be forbidden. However, as the years moved forward, those raised in my society would be permitted to take a test to become "citizens" - in essence, to get some of their democratic powers back and be allowed to vote on certain issues. The eventual goal would be a complete return to democracy, but a socialist democracy with a different philosophy than our current one.

Internationally:

Rapid troop recall from Afghanistan, and a note to the U.N./N.A.T.O. that we will never be their bitches again. If we go anywhere, and it will be a long time before we do, we want the support of other countries going in with us. None of this Rwanda bullshit again. Ever.

Begin work on a nuclear program with the intent of making Canada a nuclear superpower. No more relying on the U.S.A.

Militarization of the arctic for national defense.

Limited trade of primary resources would continue with the U.S., until other markets could be found. The border would be defended and no civilian traffic permitted.

Negotiate free trade with Cuba.

Ah, yes. Fun times. I would also officially start calling it "The Dominion of Canada". Because it sounds badass.

I would keep taxes the same, begin a Nuclear Weapons program to make us an ever more powerful regional superpower.

Give my citizens freedom of speech.

Pull all troops out of foreign nations and bring them home.

Annex all islands surrounding Australia (Sovereign or otherwise).

Begin building the Australian empire, beginning with a massive arms buildup and CMT.

Oh well, for shits and giggles, here's a few things I'd do off the top of my head:

- Preserve the Constitution; end the Patriot Act, MCA, etc.

- Begin a phased withdrawal from Iraq. Make it clear to the Iraqi Gov't that they either get their shit in order (eliminate corruption, sectarian leaders being parliament member, etc.) If this can't be done in a reasonable time frame, then I would invite the Iraqi Gov't, "Coalition" Members, and the UN *shudders* to discuss splitting the nation into three nations. It's not perfect, but there's no "good" way to get out of this mess that the Gov’t has got us in to.

- Abolish the Federal Reserve, begin the phasing out of the fiat currency which we currently have.

- Stop at once the REAL ID Act and any future plans for a National ID Card and RFID chips

- End the War on Drugs & Abolish the DEA. Legalize & tax "weaker" drugs (Marijuana, small dosage Opoids/Opiates, Benzodiazepines, etc.) and decriminalize all other drugs (Cocaine, Heroin, Acid, etc.) However, punishments for Driving under the influence, committing crimes under the influence, etc. will be just as harsh.

- Require the Federal Gov't (like most State Gov'ts are required) to balance its budget. Begin a debt reduction plan. Begin and audit of all Gov't sponsored/taxpayer-funded programs. Eliminate all waste programs and pork spending. Eliminate as much wasteful gov't bureaucracy as possible.

- With a balanced budget and lower National Debt, I would lower taxes across the board.

- Increase funding for NASA (after eliminating the wasteful bureaucracy parts of it). Begin plans for permanent settlements and helium-3 mining facilities on the Moon and plans for 3 phased Mars mission (robotic mission at first, then an automated mission to set up settlements, then finally a manned mission).

- Provide inducements and such for commercial/private Space missions

- End reliance on foreign oil (especially from the Middle East, Nigeria, & Venezuela) by at first utilizing our own oil and natural gas reserves. Provide funding for alternative energy, the ones that show "immediate" promise like tidal energy, wave energy, & geothermal energy. This should hopefully (I'm not an expert) buy us time to have efficient hydrogen fuel cells and eventually, fusion power.

- Provide funding for the research into Stem Cells, Cancer, AIDS, etc.

- Education... well it'd take to long to outline my view about how the Education system should be changed. However, I would see to it that "Intelligent Design", “Abstinence Only" Sex Ed, and other invasions of fairy tails (religion) into the Education System be ended. No school-sponsored prayer, no special admittances given to Muslims for their prayers, etc.

- End the tax-exempt status of all Religious institutions, especially the Catholic Church.

- Repeal most laws and/or restrictions against private gun ownership.

- Abolish the Electoral College system

- Build a closer relationship with the European Union, while encouraging (not force, induce, or bribe) them to close the floodgates on the mass Muslim immigrations into their nations.

- Immediately deport all illegal immigrants currently in jail or commit crimes.

- Begin a program for deporting illegal immigrants who leech off the gov't, while providing a path (not a b/s one, a path that actually takes effort) to legal residency for illegals who contribute to society.

- Instead of using the National Guard to fight in pointless wars, I'd use them to guard the southern border, and wouldn't reprimand any guardsmen who fired at armed illegals trying to cross the border.

- Review Defense spending, reduce spending in some areas and increase in others. The Defense Department and the Military should focus on the growing power of the SCO.

Eh, and about a million other things, but I've written enough already.
