I rock the plain hoodie/overshirt and jeans everyday during fall and winter and plain t-shirt with plaid shorts every summer. Its cheap, easy, everything matches, I don't look like a dumbass, and besides, who cares about your clothes? If you want to impress someone use your personality not your fashion choice. Fashion styles are lame and the people that follow them are even lamer.

I understand if you think something looks nice on you, okay, I get that. But I, being a socially conscious consumer, am not going to spend 80$ on a pair of shoes. Regular, cheap shit is where it's at.

You've also just made a post describing your style...And called style lame.

Self-Esteem problems?

And with 'regular cheep shit', you usually get what you paid for.

No, what I meant was that it's when you're wearing jeans or shorts every day, there's no need to worry about what clothes go with what, you know? orange shirts and jeans look just as good as blue shirts with jeans which look just as good as black shirts with shorts, etc etc. I buy clothes based on my size, not their design and whatnot. That's what I was trying to say.

I favor practicality over everything else.

What a boring, repetitive cycle of clothing. Are you planning on wearing this shit for the rest of your life, or will you change it as style changes in future? People like yourself have to change according to style every once in a while, to avoid looking 10 years out of date. Unless you're a grandpa.

I believe that buying clothes based on your size is better than those who buy trendy "in" clothes. I think that the people you know that seem to show "style" are really not into style at all. Examples are like those people who wear a graphic t-shirt + vests and keffiyehs who feel that they have style but in reality they don't. Some of them even wear a brown belt together with a black shoes... you know those people who try to be stylish but they don't even know the basics.

Aside from that, though you do not seem to care about style especially fashion, others who are very much interested in it might also not care about what you are interested in.
I agree to the above poster that you still need to change your outfit in the future. Like once you have a job, you need to get a suit and so on.

I'm planning on being homeless when I get out of college so it won't really matter anyway.

It takes less than 30 seconds for someone to form an opinion of you - Unless you can talk real good magic to everyday people in under 30 seconds - they're going to form the opinion you're not well kept, and your a cheap fuck.

Maybe you don't give 2 shits what others think of you, if you're happy with that - all the better to you.

Style tells people whats on the inside. For example you style tells me not that your boring, unimaginative (although it could be the case) but rather you just don't care. You wake up, fire one off, put on dirty jeans and are out the door. Good job, if thats how you want to be viewed, either by strangers on the street or your coworkers.

By saying that, it shows that you do care. If you really didn't care you wouldn't have addressed the issue at all.

but clothing is a way to immediately express to people the kind of person you are. You can more easily attract people with similar interests if you dress according to its associated "style"

I mean, style and clothing is a part of culture, just like food and language. Do you have any views on your place in society or what culture you belong to? I take it that homeless remark was true....lol

style ftw

I agree 99%.

The only thing is that I rock the T-shirt/jeans/hoody in the cold and wife beater/jeans in the heat.

Money you spend should be on functional things. If you shirt costs a lot more because it's a better material, softer, etc, great. I have a couple of pairs of silk boxers I wouldn't change for the world.

But if you're paying extra for a brand or a colour scheme thought up by a retarded 6 year old, you're wasting your money.

I get where you are coming from, but I actually enjoy taking time trying to make myself look nice. I like fashion, and as lame as that is, I really don't care about what anyone else thinks. I just simply wear what I like no matter if it is "in" or "out."

Check it:

Clothes DO Make the Man!

Or First Impressionism

"I don’t get no respect"
-- Rodney Dangerfield

How important really is what we wear?

Is there a cause/effect in how we are treated by the world? Does it make a difference in getting someone to help you in a Department store, or being seated at a good table in a restaurant? Can’t people look through all the superficial and see the real us?

Fortunately, guys, we have some scientific evidence to support what you wear does make a difference in how you influence the world around you. Maybe we didn’t want to believe (but suspected) the real reason that guy down the hall who always dressed great, but didn’t know poop is now a vice president!

When your credibility is crucial, in situations such as job interviews, court testimony, sales presentations and first dates (or even second and third dates) it is important to made a "good" first impression.

"You never get a second chance
to make a first impression"

-- Will Rogers

Behavioral scientists tell us that this "first impression" is a strong one. And the process of sizing you up is on a subconscious/emotional level of the brain. Your evaluation by a stranger takes 30 seconds or less and can be so strong that it could take as much as five years to erase.

Don’t you think it’s easier to make a great first impression with you appearance and then follow up by showing what a capable, impressive and trustworthy person you are with a winning performance?

We’ve all heard the expression "You can’t judge a book by its cover". If you agree, it’s a good thing you’re not in publishing. Publishing houses have long since proven that a cover may not tell you what’s inside a book, but the cover is the reason that we pick up one or the other off the rack. Until a book is picked up, no sale is made!

A good example of "how you look being more important than what you say" is the first Kennedy-Nixon presidential debate. Radio listeners thought that Nixon had won while TV watchers gave Kennedy the win. Kennedy looked great, fresh and vigorous while Nixon appeared tired and rumpled. The TV audience gave more credibility to what they saw than what they heard.

When I describe someone as an assistant manger at a fast food restaurant you immediately conjure an image of that person, maybe without much conscious thought. When I mention a high level executive you get another, different image in your mind. There is a definite picture of a person with credibility, authority and power – a professional image.

Why not take advantage of the research on human nature and utilize the knowledge to enhance and control how you are accepted?

Damn right. When you die, you can't take it with you...so why not take the time out to look good now?

I've found that clothes are an investment, not a simple purchase. I spent $30 on a belt two years ago at a high-end store, instead of paying $10 for a cheapo belt at target. The difference? My belt still looks brand new today! Some third-world-made shit at wally world will barely last you 6 months. I go cheap on things that will wear out fast, or that nobody will see (undershirts, underwear, socks) but dress shirts, pants, and ESPECIALLY jackets are investments that will last you a long time. This is even more applicable when you're old enough to buy a suit. My father's suits have lasted him decades, and all he has to pay for is dry-cleaning and the occasional visit to the tailor's. Even if he spent $1500 for his suit 10 years ago, you could easily go through several cheaper suits in the meantime, all the while looking terrible.

And seriously, who the fuck is going to remember you if you dress like this?

You're just some schmuck. You can't detach your appearence and personality. That is unfortunate, but that's the facts. You can be angry about it, or you can use it as a tool. Your choice.

I think it's pretty hilarious that your idea of a high-end, oh-shit-this-is-an-investment belt costs $30

It was an example. Probably a bad one; the original price of it was $45 or so but it was discounted. I never said you had to PAY a lot for nice clothes! That's why ebay is so great. Now, I'm not rocking this kind of shit (http://www.queenbags.com/categories.php?id=40), but it's not this kind of shit (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10391827) either. But Mr. Plain Sweatshirt here IS wearing the shitty walmart belts. And nobody goes from wal-mart belts to Louis V right away. When I "saw the light" I didn't either.

Dressing like a bum is just as ridiculous as obsessing over fashion. Though, to be fair, at least the obsessive person still tends to look good in public.

Ultimately, I think the following things matter:
1) Don't look like shit.
2) Don't spend absurd amounts of money on your clothes.

Within those guidelines, you can find pretty much any style you want.

This. Head to Macy's just after Christmas.I managed to pick up a couple of designer shirts and a Dockers jacket at just under $150.00. Buy nice clothes that LAST, so that you can slowly build up a respectable wardrobe without killing your budget. A man needs only 5 nice shirts and 3 pairs of nice jeans to look good, in my own humble opinion.
